Photos and Description of this Midpines holiday house

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

California has cowboys, beaches and surfing, skiing, hiking and shopping all rolled into one beautiful state. Seeing Yosemite when you vacation in California is a must. For this vacation, expand your mind and enjoy a true California experience by staying in a straw bale home. Unlike those of big bad wolf fame, modern straw bale homes are warm and comfortable. They provide a unique place to rest your soul (and feet) after a day of discovering Yosemite.

Our newly constructed Yosemite Straw Bale vacation home is a wonder. While the straw bales provide incredible R-50 insulation, we are using passive solar heating for preheating our radiant floor heating system with an instantaneous hot water heater as a backup system. Our photovoltaic grid panels are naturally creating clean energy from the sun. We tested these techniques on our own home and perfected them in this vacation rental for your enjoyment. Made to feel like your private second home, design touches include a social kitchen with a granite slab bar height counter, finished dyed concrete floors, and cozy radiant floor heating. Sitting hilltop at 3000 feet elevation (914m), the house includes a private deck perfect for relaxing and enjoying the views. We are also honored to share with you, eight fine art prints by renowned Sierra photographer Howard Weamer.

The gates of Yosemite are a mere 35 minutes away* on a drive that follows the wild and scenic Merced River. (*Your drive may take longer as you stop to put your feet in the river or photograph the wildflowers along the way.)

Check out our profile below, and look at the calendar for booking availability. Call or email to hear more and make arrangements. We look forward to hearing from you.

Perfect getaway cabin and location.

Lovely well equipped character filled cabin with everything we needed for an amazing 3 night stay. Beautiful views, sunsets and sunrises from the balcony. Cabin was a perfect haven to come back to after a full day out in Yosemite.

Lovely home perfect for two couples

  • 5 of 5

The home was great so clean and interesting that it was made out of straw. We enjoyed our stay and the town of Mariposa, wish the roads to Yosemite NP were not so twisted and curved as it took awhile to get to the park even though miles wise it wasn't far. The home was perfect.

We enjoyed our stay in the Straw Bale House very much. It was a very quiet setting and just what we wanted for our "base camp" to visit incredible Yosemite. We also enjoyed Mariposa; highlights outside the Park included dinner at Savoury's Restaurant, the Casto Oaks Tasting Room, and a visit to the Butterfly Creek Winery. People in these and other shops we visited were very friendly and welcoming. The house was very comfortably furnished and clean. We appreciated the thoughtful design, and the efficiency of the straw bale construction at regulating the inside temperature. (The information provided on keeping the house cool during the day was helpful and accurate.) We are glad we got to experience a stay in this house!

We had a fantastic time in Mariposa straw bale house!

From the first acknowledgement of booking this house I received communications regarding our stay and this beautiful home. I asked a few questions and was answered quickly and given good information. Upon entering the home for the first night, we were greeted to a lovely, cozy home with all the information for the electronics in the home, as well as area information all in a binder on the island. The home was very clean and had a lot of little extras such as spices and detergents. The 4 of us were very comfortable and looked forward to returning each night. We could have spent more nights there but had other areas to visit. Thank you for allowing us to share your beautiful home-and it is not just a house, we called it home!

Beautiful home in a gorgeous setting.

We stayed in the Straw Bale house for 3 nights while visiting Yosemite NP. We were two adult couples, so it was nice to have two bedrooms each with its own bathroom, all on one level. The house is lovely inside with stained concrete floors and comfy furniture. Kitchen is ample and well appointed. The pantry was stocked with spices, sugar, etc. and the refrig had some basic condiments, which we like to see in rental homes. There's a cell tower right behind the house so service was robust. The beds were good. Beautiful bathrooms. All very clean.

The house is located about a 65 minute drive from the Yosemite NP entrance. To get there you drive along the Merced River through an amazingly beautiful valley. The travel time to/from the park was perhaps the only drawback, as we had to make the trip one time each day; i.e. it was not realistic to go back to the house and return to the park for an evening ranger talk or star watch.

We found some nice restaurants in Mariposa which is about a 10 minute drive from the house.

All in all we highly recommend this house as a place to stay when visiting Yosemite NP.

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your kind review! We are so pleased that you thoroughly enjoyed your visit. As you mentioned, our home is perfect for two couples as there is no need to flip the coin for who gets the better room. Each bedroom has its own private bath and shower. It's wonderful that you enjoyed the drive following the Merced River canyon and appreciated all the beauty it has to offer. It is very rare to take 65 minutes to arrive at the Park Entrance. Our rental home is located in Midpines which is 15 minutes closer to the Park than most other rentals in the Mariposa area. It is a 35 minute drive (22 miles) to the Arch Rock entrance following the Scenic Merced River and an additional 15-20 minute drive to the Visitor Center Parking lot. We recommend during peak season travel to leave before 8:00 am to avoid any congestion at the Park entrance. Your visit must have unfortunately coincided with Labor Day weekend visitors extended stays. Typically, it takes less than an hour to the Visitor Center parking lot. My husband can make it to the Curry Village ice rink in 55 minutes for hockey practice in winter. With that said, he might need to slow down a bit especially in winter!
