About Alec Smyth

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?

What makes this house unique

Capitol Hill townhouses are quaint but tend to be very deep and narrow, and in consequence dark. This house is the antithesis of that, with its open floor plan and skylights. It is a whole-house rental, not a basement or condo, and within the context of Capitol Hill's 19th century houses, is relatively large at 1700 square feet.

Great Choice!

  • 5 of 5

This lovely townhome was a pleasure to move into, however temporarily! Everything is immaculate and all finishes are of the utmost quality. The rooms are spacious - the master bedroom is incredibly large, with a bay window and walls of closets (filled with wooden hangers and lots of them!). The enclosed patio in the back was a lovely place to enjoy a glass of wine and morning coffee. The rental comes with a parking pass for the permit street parking; we even had the best luck to find a space directly in front of the building (we left the car there for the duration of our stay).

It is about a 15 minute walk from the Capitol and it is always our expectation that a visit to DC will involve walking; however, DC has lots of ride sharing options, for those who are worn out at the end of the day. Just across the park are several lovely restaurants with outdoor seating, perfect for May.

We usually visit DC each spring and hope to return to this amazing home.

That says it all. Comfortable beds, quiet, central. It's only $6-$10 cab or Uber to attractions. Close dining and grocery. Great stay.

Super location, spacious and comfy!

  • 5 of 5

The owner, Alec, was always accessible when I had a question or concern, which I found extremely comforting! The house was located a short 12 minute walk to Union Station and also very close to the Capitol. It was very comfortable for all six of us with plenty of room to rest and relax after busy days touring.....exactly what we had hoped for!

Perfect place

  • 5 of 5

We travelled with 4 adults and 2 children and the place was perfect. The home had discreet child proofing that made our visit to a two story home worry free. Clean and classical music playing upon arrival. Would recommend to anyone and stay again! Thanks!

The house is located on a quiet friendly street less than half a block from Stanton Park and one block from Restaurant Row, a block of restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs.
