About Gerald Smyth

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?

What makes this house unique

Capitol Hill townhouses are quaint but tend to be very deep and narrow, and in consequence dark. This house is the antithesis of that, with its open floor plan and skylights. It is a whole-house rental, not a basement or condo, and within the context of Capitol Hill's 19th century houses, is relatively large at 1700 square feet.

Beautiful house and great location. Great place to stay with 3 kids!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with our family of 5 (kids age 10, 8 and 2). House had everything we needed. Nice full sized crib (our two year old is very tall and those small hotel cribs are a little small for him). There's a nice playground and park one block away which was great as well. Capitol and Union station both a pleasant walk away. Kitchen well supplied for cooking. No complaints!

Beautiful home with fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

Spent Spring Break here with 2 grandparents, 2 parents and 2 kids, ages 9 and 11, and this worked out perfectly. Convenience of a kitchen and nearby grocery worked out well. Thought parking would be a problem but we were always able to find a spot. We love to walk so most of our outings we walked to the National Mall and the Monuments, cafes,.... Beds were new and very comfortable. Perfect choice for us!

Better than we could have dreamed

  • 5 of 5

We could not believe how beautiful this house is. Every room is just gorgeous. Tastefully decorated, gorgeous details, with all the essentials. The neighborhood is awesome. Upscale, quiet, unique. Walking distance to a really cool market and the National Mall & museums. The guest book had really great info that gave us some awesome insider tips. We had a great time in DC, and staying here was our favorite part of all. Great value on top of everything. We can't WAIT to stay again.

Gorgeous, clean home in a great spot

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house—it felt spacious and bright. We had four adults and three kids, and there was plenty of room with the bunks /trundle and the two bedrooms. The kitchen was well stocked, and the house was clean and thoughtfully appointed. The owner was helpful, and we’d definitely consider saying here again. Truly perfect!

The house is located on a quiet friendly street less than half a block from Stanton Park and one block from Restaurant Row, a block of restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs.
