Bukit Lawang is on the banks of the Bohorok River and on the doorstep of the Gunung Leuser National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is home to numerous rare and protected wildlife and plants. Gunung Leuser National Park is a large national park covering 950,000 hectares in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, straddling the border of the provinces of North Sumatra and Aceh. There are about 380 species of birds, 205 species of large and small mammals, including the Sumatran orangutan, Sumatran tiger, Sumatran rhinocerus, Sumatran elephant, sambar deer, leopard cat, and 4000 species of plants.
The national park, settled in the Barisan mountain range, is named after Mount Leuser (3,381 m), and protects a wide range of ecosystems; it is one of the two remaining habitats for Sumatran orangutans and an orangutan sanctuary of Bukit Lawang is located inside the park.
Apart from jungle trekking, Bukit Lawang often sees visitors stay for weeks on end to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, other attractions, swimming or tubing in the river and eating at the many restaurants.
