Susan Colwell purchased this townhome in 2014

Why Susan Colwell chose Baltimore

Manager Susan Colwell: 'I was walking through historic Fells Point, along the waterfront enjoying the shops and the street scenes. After an amazing lunch on Thames St., I decided to walk a few of the side streets and discovered a quaint little street just off the waterfront. The street was so charming—it reminded me of a small street in an ancient European village with it's flower boxes (Tons and tons of flower boxes!!) and adorable brick homes. Every home seemed to have a bench and flower-pot gardens were definitely the point of pride here. When I saw that Fells Point Charmer was for sale, I knew we had to have it!'

What makes this townhome unique

Old-world charm with a luxurious modern twist!

Just what we were looking for!!

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a long weekend get away for 2 couples and this fit the bill perfectly. Very close to Fells Point water front and walking distance to Canton and Inner Harbor. We parked our car on Thursday and didn't need it until we were ready to leave on Sunday. Lots of character and charm with room for 4 adults comfortably. The house was equipped with everything we needed for the 3 day stay. The parking spot was a few blocks away but no big deal, easy to unload bags at the house as the street is not too busy. Owner replied quickly to questions about a second parking space and other items. Overall our group felt the stay was comfortable, safe and convenient.

Definitely not for everyone

  • 3 of 5

I have mixed feelings about this place. The pros: cute curb appeal (purple door!), nice quality and updated furnishings, new appliances in the kitchenette, firm and comfortable mattress, great shower, flat screen TV's, and no street noise at all because it's on a short one-way street with virtually no traffic.

The cons: the spiral staircase is so narrow and vertical that there is no way anything bigger than a small carry on can go upstairs. We had large suitcases because we were on a longer trip so those bags had to stay downstairs on the dining table. And the stairs to the third floor are not only narrow and slanted, but there is no railing!

There is central A/C but, not surprisingly, the first floor is cold, the second floor is cool and the third floor is warm. There are large portable AC units in each bedroom, which help, especially at night - and their low roar really drowns out any outside noise. The bad thing is that the units are large and make getting around the bed a challenge. Unfortunately, the bedroom windows face east and the curtains are sheer so the sun wakes you up VERY early.

There is a nicely furnished outdoor patio off the kitchen, but who wants to sit there when you have to pass the trash cans swarming with flies to get there? (There is also a cute small patio off the bathroom on the second floor - w/o flies, but prohibitively hot in the afternoon.)

This place is not for people who are taller than 5'11" because the bathroom ceilings are low (original beams are attractive but watchyour head.) It's also not good for people with bad knees (beds are low profile in addition to the stair issue) or those who have balance issues ( the upstairs floors slope, including in the shower).

All of this is made more irritating because the place is not cheap, after taxes and fees, AND the owner makes you buy a nonrefundable temporary insurance policy instead of the usual refundable deposit that other VRBO places have.

We did call the manager because there was a strong sewage smell on the top floor in the afternoons, but it may have been due to the heat. They sent a maintenance man promptly, but he couldn't find anything (he came in the morning when the smell wasn't bad).

We would probably stay here again (with less luggage), but solely because it's very close to our son's apt.

Great Location and nice little apartment

  • 4 of 5

House is located right in Fell's Point, a 5 minute walk. We were there for my son's college graduation which was also Preakness weekend so pretty busy. House is narrow but great for a couple or small group or family. It was clean and in a great location. One parking spot came with house but is is 2 1/2 blocks away so still manageable. We were a family of 4. The first floor living was nice, there is an outdoor patio which we would have liked to use but it is right next to the garbage cans and when we were there, there were a lot of flies circling over garbage and you couldn't get out back door without them coming in house or sit out at patio because of the flies. There is a spiral staircase which gets you to second floor. It is narrow and manageable but if you have a large suitcase may be difficult. The third floor has only one air conditioning vent in the parlor room not in the bedroom. The one night we were there the temperatures were in 90s and the third floor was very uncomfortable and hot. There were fans available to put out but they didn't really cool the floor down. The nights in the 70s were very comfortable with all windows open. If they get an air conditioner unit in third floor bedroom that would solve problem. This would only affect renting in the summer. It is an old house so the ceilings get lower as you go up the floors, not a problem for me but my sons and husband could feel the height change. We walked all over which was great. Little Italy is a 15 minute walk and inner harbor as well, you really don't need a car. Susan was great to work with and communication was great. I would definitely stay at one of her locations again.

Amazing property

  • 5 of 5

I needed to check-in a little earlier the home owner was more then accommodating to this. The pictures dont do it justice. The only complaint i would have is parking. Im happy there was an available space and i know parking in the city is not best but 2 1/2 block wlk in 30 degrees weather no fun lol. But the kitchenware was amazing. As well as beds. The downstairs stayed cold though dont kno if it's cuz of lack of insulation or what. But the rachel ray pots and pans ooooo made me buy some.

Fell's Point is a historic waterfront neighborhood (circa1763) in the southeastern area of Baltimore along the north shore of the Baltimore Harbor and the Northwest Branch of the Patapsco River. There are many shops, including antique stores, restaurants, coffee bars, music stores, a municipal market house with individual stalls, and over 120 pubs. Located just east of the famous 'Inner Harbor' (formerly referred to as 'The Basin') adjacent to Baltimore's downtown central business district and the Jones Falls stream (which splits the city, running from northern Baltimore County), Fell's Point has a maritime past and has the air of a seafaring town, it also has the greatest concentration of drinking establishments and restaurants in the city. This waterfront community is a tourist destination. It can be reached by 'water taxi' barges, expressway/interstate highways, local streets and boulevards and several municipal/state transit bus lines.
