About Captain Rob

Classic Alaska Charters is owned and operated by Captain Rob Scherer, US Coast Guard certified for 6 passengers, is a certified sport fishing business and guide with Alaska Dept of Fish & Game, also registered outfitter guide with the U.S. Forest Service, and, is a Federal Halibut Charter permit holder to enable guests to catch and keep halibut according to current regulations. Captain Rob has been professionally guiding in Alaskan waters since 1985, purchasing the Saltery 'C' in 1990 and since been the number one overnight charter in the Ketchikan area.

Captain Rob purchased this yacht in 1990

Why Captain Rob chose Ketchikan

Graduating from UW-Stevens Point in 1984 he headed straight to Alaska to fulfill a dream of Alaskan adventure proposed by his late Grandfather many years before. With a degree in Resource and Fisheries Mgmt, the US Forest Service accepted him for seasonal employment as an Assistant to the District Fish Biologists, first, the Thorne Bay Ranger District and then over to the Misty Fiords National Monument Wilderness District.

The Fish Biologist of the Misty Fiords National Monument Wilderness Ranger District, Mike Scott, requested Rob's services to catalog & inventory lakes, streams and rivers within the 2.8 million acres of Misty Fiords Wilderness. Rob's determination to succeed and meet the goals proposed by his superiors saved the USFS (and taxpayers) hundreds of thousands of dollars, while providing enduring inventory analysis of the freshwater ecosystems found throughout the Wilderness.

Working in the private sector offered more genuine possibilities of adventure and exploration and when the opportunity of owning & operating a charter business presented itself in 1990, Rob dedicated himself to make the dream a reality with long hours, hard work, little pay, and great sacrafice, you know, a typical small business owners road to success! Since then, he's developed Classic Alaska Charters into the most enduring overnight charter service in Ketchikan. Today, Classic Alaska Charters stands alone as the only original overnight operation still in existence from that period of time. CAC continues to book months to a year in advance with 80% repeat or referral guests year after year. Find out for yourself why Classic Alaska Charters is the most sought after and successful overnight charter in the Ketchikan Alaska area.

Captain Rob's educational background, USFS Alaskan field experiences, and the more than 80,000 actual hours of guiding on the water and in wilderness areas, ensures that clients will be provided with the highest level of knowledge and experience for quality, successful adventuring in Southeast Alaska. Along with all the above, His innovative fishing techniques, and affinity for the latest high tech equipment, navigates every group to where the fishing and adventure action is! Captain Rob is also a wildlife and nature photographer and can guide you into spectacular wilderness photo opportunities, from scenery to wildlife of every kind found in the Ketchikan and Misty Fiords Wilderness area. You'll be in capable and responsible hands on your Alaskan Adventure with Captain Rob

Captain Rob and Chef Christina, i must say we never dreamed the cooking would be so good, but it was excellent.seafood which was all fresh, and caught by us, dungeness crabs, spotted prawns, halibut, cod, salmon, topped off a wonderful experience, in the misty forjds wilderness.

the captain knew where to go, what to use, and how to catch fish, the rest was up to us and we enjoyed every minute of it.the jet boat excursion into the wilderness, more bald eagles than we could count, bears lurking in the shadows, and salmon every where up that "secret river", was the highlight , but truthfully, every day was a highlight,

Owner's Response: Ahoy there Chris, Thank you so much for your review! I'm glad you and Susan, JJ and Beth, all had such a marvelous time aboard the Saltery "C" being spoiled by chef Christina's cuisine and my guiding efforts to locate plenty of fishing action for you folks. The awe n wonder in your voices with every catch, the pull of the crab and shrimp pots, the jetboat ride and more, makes my job such a joy and fun for me as well! Hosting folks like you was such a memorable pleasure! Enjoy your boxes of seafood and lifetime memories! Cheers! Captain Rob-Classic Alaska Charters

My Alaska Fishing Trip

  • 5 of 5

My week-long fishing expedition was exactly as it was advertised and more. I received personalized attention from the captain and chef, and I was treated to an extraordinary feast and entertainment. The fishing was as good as promised plus the photo opportunities were exceptional. Each return trip with this captain has exceeded the previous ones. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone interested in experiencing the rugged natural beauty of Alaska wrapped up in an unique one-on-one experience. This is a wonderful way to explore the "last frontier" and make lifelong memories.

Another CAC Wild Adventure

  • 5 of 5

This year "the sistas" and J returned for another CAC adventure. My 3 sisters and my husband & I joined Cap't. Rob for fishing. It was and had been raining so we went around the long way and Rob treated us to wonderful waterfalls and wild life (a pod of Orchas swimming along with us). The 3 sisters have not fished much but with Rob's help they became pros in a short time. Rob also can get us "into" the fish and we enjoyed a lot of action. We also enjoy jet boating up to a river and doing salmon fishing while wading in the river. The peace and quiet of the river along with the sound of fish jumping, eagles calling and an occasional snap of a twig makes this place magical. Cap't Rob also led the sisters in a hike up to a quiet lake. He took the opportunity along the way to point out fish ladders, bear scraps, and the various plants and flora. We love the knowledge that he can and does share. Then besides the fishing there is the crabbing and shrimping....pull up the crab pot and fresh crab that night! Always a highlight! And then somehow Rob can find chefs that get better and better. The meals are five star quality served on his boat and everything is fresh and healthy!! My husband and I have fished with Rob for over 13+ years and enjoy bringing guests with us to introduce them to the wonder of wilderness cruising and fishing in AK. An excellent adventure!

First time in Alaska

  • 5 of 5

I have always loved the outdoors and especially fishing, so a trip to Alaska was always on my bucket list. Captain Rob and Classic Alaska Charters was the way to go! Captain Rob is extremely knowledgable and happy to share that knowledge with his guests. We caught tons of fish and more species than I can count. We also saw an incredible amount of wildlife such as bear, deer, orca, humpback whales, octopus, bald eagles. To top it off the food was spectacular! Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined the spread we had to enjoy! Over all I would give the experience a 5 out of 5 and I would recommend CAC to anyone who enjoys spectacular fishing, spectacular wildlife, spectacular food and spectacular scenery. Thanks again Captain Rob!

Owner's Response: Thank you Michael for your positive review! It was a sincere honor to host you, your brothers, and dad, on the summer solstice Alaska adventure of a lifetime this past year! I so looked forward to the challenge of making your dad's retirement "gift trip" from the company an exceptional one...especially with the announcement party the company had, presentations of the trip certificate to your dad, and all the eager anticipations for me to live up to. Awesome it all came together in such a fun, adventurous, fulfilling, and memorable way! Right on! See you all again someday soon... Happy Holidays to you, brothers and dad from me and CAC. Cheers!
