Cabin by Tonto Creek

Bedrooms 2
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

Photos and Description of this Kohls Ranch holiday cabin

3 Bedroom, 2 bath, wonderful views.

The Cabin is situated on 3 lots providing space from the neighboring cabins. The elevation is 5300 feet which is typically 15 to 20 degrees or more cooler than the Phoenix metro area.

The upstairs sleeping area (4 beds) can be divided for privacy using the bi-fold doors. The downstairs sofa bed sleeps 2.

The Kitchen has a gas stove, 2 apartment size refrigerators, microwave, coffee maker (you provide the grounds, we provide the filters) toaster and toaster oven. Plates, cups, glasses, flatware, and pots and pans are provided.

We have an amazing view of Tonto Creek from The Cabin both indoors and out. The creek access is via a stone stairway with handrail. The creek has a shallow play area for younger kids, and a deeper are for older children and adults. NO DIVING, there are rocks in the water. The deeper end is also a favorite for fishing.

There is a covered patio and 1 covered parking space. There is a second level deck over the parking spot giving great views. There is additional uncovered parking on the driveway and on the north side of the property (north access by removing 2 fence rails). The Cabin is on a dead end road so traffic is minimal.

The location is 673 S. Meadow Lane, Payson, Az. 85541. The street name was changed as part of 911 registration and used to be Mockingbird Lane. If a mapping program cannot find Meadow Lane, try Mockingbird Lane.

Horse riding is available within a 10 minute walk.

The Zane Grey Restaurant and Bar at the Kohls Ranch Lodge is excellent for Lunch or Dinner and is also a 10 minute walk.

Christopher Creek is about 5 minutes past the Kohls Ranch turn on highway 260. The area offers a general store, and additional dining options.

ASU Camp Tontozona is also within a 10 minute walk. ASU preseason football training is there each summer.

The Cabin can also provide a great base camp for hunting or fishing.

A propane grill is available on the lower patio.

A washer and dryer are also provided for your convenience.

The Cabin front is to the community meadow. The meadow is restricted to residents and guests. It is a great area to play catch, softball, or just hang out. Shortly before sunset the meadow is definitely the place to be. Setup chairs and enjoy the twilight. Often there are birds catching bugs in the air around sunset and it is great to watch. After dark, walk out to the meadow and look up. The stars are amazing. With a pair of binoculars you can see lots and lots of stars, the moon if it is up, and planets if up. Some people spread out a tarp and observe lying on their back (do not use a blanket or sheet, it will be covered in burs and twigs).

This is a No Smoking property. Smoking indoors or near the patios will result in loss of your Security Deposit. There are designated smoking areas to each side of the property.

NO FIRE. Camp Fires are not allowed. The single greatest threat to The Cabin is Fire. There is NO location within which to make a camp fire either on the property or the Meadow. Since we are within a national forest everyone is quite paranoid concerning open fires.

The property is about 15 minutes from Payson (for those things you thought you brought but find out that you did not). Also Payson offers a wide choice of Restaurant dining and entertainment. The property is also about 20 minutes away from the top of the Mogollon Rim (7000 feet) where you can enjoy a panoramic view, and offering several destinations (Heber, Woods Canyon Lake, and much more).

Guest Testimonial:

"We really enjoyed our stay at your cabin. My kids had a blast being so close to the creek. It was great not having internet. Very nice, clean, user friendly, and perfect for small children. We may have worn out the carpet on the inside stairs a bit. My 2&4 yr olds loved the spiral stairs. They have never seen interior stairs. I hope we left it in decent shape.

I appreciate that it was clean and well maintained.

I can't say that we will be back. As we enjoy trying new things but, I will certainly suggest your situation at every opportunity. We spent a day hiking and fishing the creek and visiting the fish hatchery. And another day 4-wheeling up at Milk Point. We also spent time playing on the lawn and watching movies in the evening. Thank you for a great experience all the way around."

Unfortunately the property was constructed beginning the the 1950, and as such is not ADA compliant. There are level changes from the front porch, side patio, stairs to the creek, and upstairs bedrooms.

This property has mounted animal trophies (2). If a person finds this offensive, they should not rent this property.

About John Durham

I am an Arizona native living in Mesa, Az. I graduated from ASU in 1972 with a B.S. in Electronic Engineering. I married Nellie (also an Az native) in 1972 and she has not thrown me out yet. We have 3 children and 3 grandchildren.

I was the second generation owner and operator of the family business, Durham Communications. I have retired from the business and entrusted its continuing operation to my son (third generation).

John Durham purchased this cabin in 1952

Why John Durham chose Arizona

The original core of the cabin was constructed in 1951 - 52 by William Durham and family. The cabin has never been sold, but rather has been passed down within the family.

Over the years rock work (patio, front area) was added.

The upstairs bedrooms and elevated patio were added in the 1970s.

What makes this cabin unique

One of the best creek-side locations on Tonto Creek.

Swimming / fishing hole which transitions to shallows for wading.

Three lot property creates plenty of room from the neighbors.

Interesting architecture and installed art (stained glass window, large dream catcher).

Low traffic area on dead end road.

Close to the Mogollon Rim and rim lakes

Very Nice Cabin in the woods

  • 4 of 5

This was a beautiful cabin located right on Tonto Creek. My youngest daughter even caught a fish in the creek! We loved staying here, and wish we had booked it for longer. It was very clean, and the owners were very prompt in getting back to us with any questions. Will definitely book again!

The only complaint we have is the noise from the Kohl's Ranch bar down the street carried on into the night. Other than that, very quiet and peaceful.

Owner's Response: Sorry to hear about the bar noise. The lodge hosts weddings almost every weekend, and sometimes they get loud. Feel free to call the Lodge to see if they will turn down the volume after 10:00 or earlier.

Easy to get to, nice neighborhood behind Kohl's Ranch Inn which has a nice restaurant within walking distance. Summer can be a bit warm and there is no air conditioning, a swamp cooler for the second floor sleeping quarters is insufficient to cool the house even though it is small. Needs air conditioning. Great stock of movies and a first class tv but no cable and spotty internet and phone and only then if you are with Verizon. Very comfortable, great two level patio overlooking the creek. The creek is a mixed blessing. The creek is public property and Kohl's ranch vacationers of all ages wander the creek at all hours, some very early and some stay till after dark and that is an intrusion on your privacy but you just have to accept it. Minimal water pressure, showers can be a challenge and warm water takes a while. Smallest, cutest oldest refrigerator I've ever seen, fortunately there is a second one on the back porch. Imagine 1970's avacado green shag carpeting throughout the first and second floors. Muffles the sound and easy on the feet but what a throwback. Beds are quite comfortable but it is not really two bedroom, more accurately it is one big bedroom with a folding partition between them. Sleeping quarters are a bit cozy. A really nice feature is the "meadow" directly in front of the cabin. plenty of room to play softball, football and Frisbee and one of the neighbors keeps it mowed...very nice feature. The outdoor gas fed barbecue is very nicely built in and recently done and the lower patio is great for outdoor eating. Big lot and not close to any neighbors. All in all, very comfortable cottage for our one week vacation. John the owner is very nice and very customer focused

Owner's Response: The Green Shag carpet is definitely on the REPLACE schedule as funds permit. The cooler is primarily for sleeping with some benefit during the day. Guests have been split on the Cable / Internet issue. Many with children actually do not want it provided so their children cannot play video games all day. After all, a reason to use The Cabin is to have interaction with the entire family. The Cabin continues to evolve as feedback comes in. Thanks for the review John Durham

Paradise cabin in the woods

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at this cabin with my wife and our two kids. What a blast! This is what staying at a cabin is all about - rustic, no communications, fireplace and awesome outdoors access. The kids loved playing in the stream and woods. The cabin has a great deck to eat and hang out, and a back sun room to look over the creek. We watched movies from an enormous selection and made smores in the fireplace.

Such a great place. I easily will recommend to anyone, and we definitely will be back!

Quiet getaway

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful time. We were pleasantly surprised to see everything so well stocked including paper plates, coffee, even wine glasses! Loved the rooftop deck. It had a beautiful view of the Tonto creek. Also great restaurant in the community within walking distance serving homemade gourmet pizzas. We will definitely be back!

The Cabin is located in the Tonto National Forrest on the banks of Tonto Creek. The creek is stocked for fishing. Swimming / wading in the creek on warm summer days is wonderful therapy.

The Cabin fronts onto an open meadow that is for the use of residents and their guests. Sitting in the meadow around sunset is a great way to start the evening. Take a few minutes after dark to go back into the meadow and look up. You can also take binoculars to view the moon, some bright stars, and planets.
