I am a retired lawyer and my husband is a retired teacher. We live in the E. Bay Area of Northern California and get down to Mexico about twice a year.
Mimi Johnson-Jacobs purchased this villa in 2005
My husband and I visited Ajijic for 4 days in the summer of 2005. Before we left, we bought this house! It was the most impulsive thing we had ever done, especially since we were not planning to move to Mexico. However, we love having a home in the magical little town of Ajijic. And now that we are sharing it with our guests, it makes sense to keep it.
For me it's all about the tranquility. We have the mountains in back of us, the lake down below, and tropical birds splashing in the fountain in front of the terraza. I'm a golfer so I play at Chula Vista just about every day when we're there. My husband is a computer guy so he spends most of his days online. But we eat out most nights -- so that is our together time. Also we're both readers so we bring a stack of books and magazines and catch up on our reading in Ajijic.
Staying at the Villa on Rio Naza was a wonderful experience. The home is very large, open and airy. It is clean and well maintained. Lots of light comes in.
From the patios you can see up to the mountains and down to the lake all while being securely ensconced in your own little borrowed paradise. The breezes are wonderful. We were at the tail end of the rainy season, and had lightening and thunder almost nightly along with a good hour of heavy rain each night. The days were sunny and war.
Mimi, the owner, is very helpful. She touched base with us just after we made our reservation months ago and after we settled in. She sent us a ton of helpful information about the home and the general area. She has a contact there, Veronica, who assisted us in every way possible. From renting a vehicle, rides to and from the airport. Monika, the housekeeper, quietly comes in and does her work. The gardeners were there almost daily keeping everything in tip top shape. Everyone was pleasant and accommodating. This is a wonderful place, close to everything, yet quiet and peaceful. We highly recommend this wonderful getaway. The people of Ajijic are ever so pleasant. Lots of amazing places to eat and to shop.
We just returned from a most wonderful week in Ajijic. Though it was our first trip to the Lake Chapala area of Mexico, it will definitely not be our last. We are looking to retire somewhere south of the border and wanted to see what Ajijic had to offer. The property far exceeded our expectations and served as the perfect base for our exploration of the area.
The house is spacious, comfortable and lovely. It was perfect for just the two of us yet could easily accommodate two couples or an extended family with 3 bedrooms, 4 baths and two comfortable couches.
The outdoor space at this property is incredible, with 3 covered terraces overlooking the pool, gardens, lake and mountains. The pool was perfect - warm, clean and very welcoming - and big enough for laps if you are so inclined. The garden and grounds were simply amazing. The many different fruit-bearing trees, plants, herbs, bushes and flowers hosted a most diverse population of birds, butterflies and critters. The highlights for us included at least 5 types of hummingbirds, a gorgeous array of butterflies and a small herd of very friendly goats in the lot next door.
The garden is kept up magnificently by Juan and his wife, Raquel, who visited each morning to make sure all was perfect. Inside, the house was spotless upon our arrival and kept that way throughout the week by the efficient and unobtrusive Monica.
Each morning we enjoyed the colorful sunrise over the mountains and lake along with our coffee. In the evenings we were entertained by the birds and butterflies as we took in the view from the terrace with a glass of wine before venturing out for dinner in town.
About the town...it's picturesque, quaint and quiet this time of year and full of old school Mexican charm. Almost every person we passed on the street or malecon greeted us with a friendly "hola" or "Buenos Dias". We felt welcome wherever we went, from the local Wednesday market in town to the French patisserie just down the hill and came away with the impression that the locals don't just tolerate outsiders, they seem to want you to stay around for a bit, or even longer. It's no wonder the expat community has thrived here.
It would be easy to go on, but I'll sum it up with this conclusion...when you want a break from the crazy, busy stress of everyday life, check out this property. The house, the setting, the gardens, the view, the town and surrounding area will leave you relaxed and restored.
Mimi, we had the best time ever!! Kudos to Veronica - who was always available via phone, Monica - who kept the house spic and span and Juan - who made the garden a delight for the eyes!!!! We (4 people) were blown away by the layout of the house. Biggest problem every morning was where to have breakfast as all the terraces are so beautiful. The pool was the perfect depth (my husband is 6'6) to even do lap swimming - what a treat. The amount of different birds and butterflies in the garden was amazing, my husband did not stop taking pictures. The walk into Ajijic is easy and there are so many wonderful restaurants and stores nearby. We went to Guadalajara (just 50 min by car) to TlaquePaque and had a fabulous time, did the farmers market on Thursdays in Ajijic, went to the thermal hot springs in San Juan Cosala and went people watching on Sundays at the Malecon in Chapala. Every afternoon we would enjoy the garden and relax by the pool.
We will be definitely back next year.

Four of us stayed at Mimi's wonderful house in Ajijic the week of June 19. This was our second stay and no disappointments here. The staff is wonderful and go about their work without disturbing the guests. We were promptly met by Veronica, the property manager, who would make herself available and answered our questions. We hired a cook, Mari, who was recommended to us and she made it much easier for me. I generally like to cook breakfast but very much appreciated the luxury of having Mari.
We ate out every day -- so many restaurants to choose from. Of course we enjoyed the shopping!
The house is just beautiful and very welcoming! It is in a very nice and quiet residential area. We enjoyed the pool --- either in it or just sitting by it. I love the views of the lake and garden, and watching and hearing the birds. So many different birds!
We hope to return next year with two other friends who I'm sure will appreciate Mimi's lovely, feel good house.
Many many thanks Mimi!
The villa is beautiful and the gardens are spectacular. We spent several evenings at home instead of dining out because spending the evening on the terrace listening to the beautiful fountain and enjoying the view was just perfect. We throughly enjoyed the home and Chapala, meeting wonderful people, enjoying hot springs and fantastic restaurants. Monica our housekeeper couldn't have been better and enhanced our experience attending to our needs. Thank you Mimi for sharing your special home.
My wife and I chose this villa while we were relaxing at a B&B on Coronado Island a few months ago. We remembered someone telling us to check out Lake Chapala area of Mexico. VRBO presented Mimi's place and we were amazed. As with most things in life, a place is really about the people. Ajijic is wonderfully magic that way. The support staff Mimi has in place is extremely accommodating! Veronica responded to every question and request. Monica was so nice to have come by to clean and Juan the Jardinero was just plain fun.
Our level of relaxation become so deep. Our big decision of the day was which patio should we use to sit, read, birdwatch, nap, eat, drink our water and our wine. Every glance was filled with beautiful flowers, plants, fountains. The pool was such a delight after our stroll up the hill from the local grocer where a few dollars filled our bags with delights.
The transport to and from the airport was perfect as was our day outing to Tequila. We highly recommend La Cofraida distillery set up on a hill in the town. It is beautiful and very educational as to the distilling and proper tasting of very fine tequila. Casa Noble, Carlos Santana's signature brand when he was a co-owner of the distillery is a must buy at half the price one would pay in the US. Ask for Simon to be your guide at La Cofaida. He is passionate about tequila!
Each day and night was filled with the most luxurious relaxation, down at the bottom of the hill on the main road is a very nice physical therapy clinic that offers outstanding massage. As you have already heard, the restaurants throughout the area are fantastic and so very reasonably priced. Charm exudes from the pores of this place.
If you are birders, you really do not need to leave Mimi's property. But if you choose to, The Lake Chapala Bird Group, John Keeling, organizer is a very welcoming group to take you on their regular bird walks. John also wrote the local guide to restaurants in Chapala area.
I could go on and on, needless to say, this is the place. Open the door from the cobblestone street and let you mind, heart and soul unwind.

Other Activities: Shopping, Kayaking, Rock Climbing, Health/Beauty Spa
Golf: There are 2 great golf courses near the house. The first is Chula Vista, a small, visually stunning nine hole course with no electric carts. The caddies, some of them English-speaking are wonderful and knowledgeable. Most golfers play this course twice. Chula Vista is about 3 miles from the house.
The Chapala Country Club also has a nine hole course, providing an 18 hole option. This course is longer than the course at Chula Vista and and has electric carts. It is a lovely place to play, about 20 minutes from the house.
There are also several world class courses in Mexico, several of which are in Guadalajara. Guadalajara is 45 - 60 minutes away from Rio Nazas #34.
