We fell in love with this property as soon as we arrived. What an amazing way to spend our Christmas break. Udi, the villa manager and host , made our stay very special . He arranged for breakfast and lunch to be provided for us from their adjoining property . Christmas lunch was a real feast. All our needs were catered for and we were truly spoilt. Great location and accommodation with pool overlooking the beautiful beach. The busy road at the back of the property was shut away by the high walls. The 24 hour guard service was unobtrusive. Udi organised for a driver to take us out for dinner to the nearby town and then for an afternoon/evening trip to Galle (well with a visit). We would highly recommmned this property ...

A perfect spot for a family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time at the Palms Villa. I visited with my mom and four kids (ages 11-15) for a full week. It was a return trip for us to Sri Lanka but our first time on the southwest coast. The villa is beautiful and well equipped with beach towels and enough kitchen supplies to cook for ourselves. The ocean was definitely swimmable at this time of year (April). My older three swam everyday in the surf, but we are a family used to managing waves. It is not a calm beach for very young children, but my 11 year old who is a bit wave-shy still loved running in and out of the waves. The pool was perfect to balance out the exciting surf.

We liked that we were away from the craziness of hikkaduwa but that we could get there easily for a couple of days of surfing and shopping (we walked up the hill from Hikkaduwa to Sakura Batik and met the lovely couple who run it - we bought beautiful batiks there). We highly recommend taking the bus as it was easy and cheap. There is a bus stop just across the street and to the south a bit. Coming back we sometimes had to wait until the Ambalangoda stop in town, but then it was a nice walk along the beach or a quick tuk-tuk back to the villa. We also highly recommend taking the train into Galle as it again was easy and so much cheaper than hiring a driver. Plus it's a beautiful train ride. We did have Udith arrange a driver for us to Mirissa to see blue whales and that was a fabulous day! We went with Raja and the Whales and can't recommend them enough. They cost more, yes, but they were so much better than the other companies we saw on the water. They were respectful of the whales and the environment, they recycle, provided breakfast on real plates to reduce waste and were so knowledgeable about the whales. Other companies were loud and obnoxious rather than quiet observers of the amazing nature they were seeing.

We balanced out cooking for ourselves with eating out and ordering from 6 Degrees North a few villas down. Their food was amazing and would always provide leftovers. We went each morning to a small store across the street and a few hundred yards up the road to the left to get fresh bread, water and whatever other goody they had - our favorite was a crepe wrapped up with coconut and honey!

The guards and the young man who cleaned for us were lovely and much appreciated. We would definitely return again to the Palms Villa!

Brilliant place and service

  • 5 of 5

We visited The Palms villa two families with 2 young boys. Villa is very fresh, good quality and very well kept. Everything we saw in photos was exactly the same when we arrived. Absolutely distant from other world, just enjoying incredible views, rough ocean and hospitality of Udi, Siva and the the Team. The Chef working in resort near by (Nine degrees North) and has the same management was really great. We visited couple of restaurants in Hihhaduwa, but local food was far better. We had the best vacation for last couple of years for sure.

Amazing holiday!!

  • 5 of 5

We travelled to Sri Lanka with our three girls aged 18, 15 and 8. When we first arrived we were so impressed by the villa with the wonderful Indian Ocean just a few steps away. Although we were unable to swim in the ocean as it is a little rough at this time of year we still spent time on the beach paddling and made good use of the pool. We went on quite a few trips which Udi (6 Degrees North) arranged for us and thoroughly enjoyed exploring this beautiful country. The star of the show for us was Jaya, our driver and guide, as he goes the extra mile to make sure you get the most out of your trips. We will always remember his kindness and lovely personality. We ate at the villa quite a few times ordering from 6 Degrees North as they are located only a few properties down on the beach. Sampat would arrive with our food, lay the table for us and then clear away after, a take-away with a difference! We also ate out in Hikkaduwa quite a few times as there is a very good selection of restaurants, we mainly travelled there by tuk tuk which can be rather hair raising but that seems to be the nature of tuk tuk drivers!! We have so many special memories from this holiday, from a Safari in Yala National Park to boat trips to visiting the stunning City of Kandy with the Temple of the Tooth and so much more. We would highly recommend this villa as this is a holiday with a difference, you are not just booking the villa, you are booking the beautiful hospitality of Udi and all of his staff. We will definitely be back! Thank you so much Udi and staff for making this a truly memorable holiday. Ann, Martin, Tilly, Clem and Lissy

Beautiful villa, great management, but some things to be aware of

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 5 (3 teens) stayed in this property for 7 nights at the end of February. Our initial reaction to arriving was, "Wow!" The place is really beautiful and the setting on the Indian Ocean is fantastic. The pool was our favorite part of the villa and we used it for many hours every day. We ordered room service from Six Degrees North quite a few times and the food, coupled with Siva's delivery service and table setting, always made for a very nice meal.

Before you book this villa, please be aware of a few things. First, the fence along the edge of the property is no longer there. No one will bother you. The beach was deserted for the most part, so the fence itself is not an issue. What could be an issue, however, is getting down to the beach and back up again. There is about a 3 foot dropoff from the garden of the house to the beach with visible sandbags. It will spoil your view from the beach looking back to the house, but when you're at the house, you won't be able to see them. In any event, there are no stairs for beach access so you will have to climb down and back up again. We managed it, but if you or someone in your group has mobility issues, you may be unable to enjoy the beach.

Also, this is not a swimming beach. The water is incredibly rough. You will not be spending hours paddling about in the calm waters at this villa. If you want calm water, swim in the pool. Udith arranged for us to take a trip to Jungle Beach for snorkeling, and it was very nice. However, if you have any mobility issues, this will not work for you either. There is a hike through the jungle to get to that beach and there are many sandbag "stairs" involved.

There will be bugs in the villa. I understand that this is indoor/outdoor living, but you will have to keep any food you buy in the refrigerator to protect it from ants. It's not a knock against the property, as the property is designed to make indoors and outdoors seamless. It succeeds, but you will have to protect all food.

Sri Lanka is currently experiencing an electricity issue. This is an island-wide issue and is not the fault of the Palms Villa in any way. However, we experienced at least 3 blackouts while we were there. The house does not have a generator. Udith says they are working on getting a generator, so if this is an issue for you, ask about the generator before booking.

Owner's Response: I want to take this opportunity to thank you for visiting "The Palms Villa", we enjoyed having you and your family as our guests. I would also like to thank you for taking the time it write an insightful and helpful review. When we designed "The Palms Villa" I wanted to insure that everyone could enjoy the villa, from young people to seniors and those with mobility issues. We took great pains to make sure that there were no steps and all the living areas are on one level, that the doors are wide and the showers are easy to access. We also have a driveway where a car can pull up right next to the villa. I believe we are one of the few villas in this area to incorporate these designs. The beach in front of the villa took quite a beating from several storms last year, eroding some of the sand where our fence once stood. We have contracted with a construction firm to rebuild the area along the beach and are currently awaiting permission from the local government to proceed with the work. This should be finished in several months. In the meantime we will do a better job of creating easier access to the beach area. We work very hard keeping the amount of insects in the villa down to a minimum. We have exterminators on a service plan which come in periodically. We clean the villa thoroughly after every guest departs. However as you said the burden falls primarily on our guests to keep all food in containers and clean up any messes. Several sections of the country experienced an unusual power outage due to 2 malfunctioning generators. Something like this hasn't happened in 20 years. They have replaced these generators and have added 300 MW to the grid to insure this doesn't happen in the future. We also have purchased a generator and are waiting for it to be delivered. Normally the ocean is calm during this time of year, while you were there we experienced some unusual wave patterns. I have played and swam in the ocean many times with my family. We've spent many enjoyable hours playing and swimming in the ocean. Kevin/Udi

Everything needed is within walking distance or just a short/ inexpensive Tuk Tuk ride away. There are many buses which go to Ambalangoda, Galle and Hikkaduwa on Galle Road.

Known until 1972 as Ceylon, Sri Lanka has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest.

Sri Lanka has a documented history that spans over 3,000 years, but there are theories to suggest that Sri Lanka had pre-historic human settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years

The island consists mostly of flat to rolling coastal plains, with mountains rising in the south-central part. The climate is tropical and warm, due to the moderating effects of ocean winds. . Average yearly temperature ranges from 28 °C (82.4 °F) to nearly 31 °C (87.8 °F). Day and night temperatures may vary by 14 °C (25.2 °F) to 18 °C (32.4 °F).

Activities include swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, windsurfing, sailing, fishing, stand up paddling and kayaking.

Nearby Ambalangoda is well known throughout asia for its dancers and carved masks that you can purchase at the museum or the local mask stores.

In the Hikkaduwa and Ambalangoda area there are many interesting day trips including the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Galle Fort which is located just 30 km south of the villa, not only for the history and old churches, but for the fantastic shopping. Also nearby is many temples, the turtle hatchery, moonstone mines, cinnamon farms, several well stocked antique stores, lake tours.

World famous architech Geoffrey Bawa's Lununganga and letter-Garden are highly recommended.
