About D'Lana Bailey

I am a fifth generation Texan. I grew up in north Texas and moved to the Texas Hill Country 15 years ago. San Antonio was the closest large city so I found myself spending a lot of time here. I fell in love with the city's history and diversity. I chose this home for me and my daughter to use when we came into town. We bring family and friends along to have a little weekend escape every now and then. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

D'Lana Bailey purchased this house in 2013

Why D'Lana Bailey chose San Antonio

The King William district is known for its historic mansions, but that is not all King William has to offer. This home is located in the Lavaca area of King William. Lavaca is the oldest existing neighborhood in San Antonio. It is defined by its small 19th century vernacular houses built primarily by working class families beginning in the early 1870s.

The first City Directory for San Antonio was published in 1877, and at that time, Lavaca Street residents included families with German, Polish and Hispanic surnames.

This remodeled historic home was built in 1910. It has an open floor plan and is great for large families and entertaining.

Lavaca is an area rich with history, and I have tried to reflect that in the decor and feel of the property.

What makes this house unique

The neighborhood is so charming. It is a very short walk to popular restaurants and bars in the neighborhood. There are small businesses of all kinds nearby. There is a perfect view of the Tower of Americas from the front porch. It makes for a spectacular spot for fireworks on Independence Day and New Year's Eve.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Our family plus a few team members stayed here for a one and a half week long conference. Great location to Alamodome, convention center, and downtown. We especially appreciate all the careful touches and thoughtful features throughout. It's clear the owner knows what she is doing! We felt so welcome and comfortable at this house. If we are ever in the SA area again, we definitely would stay here again!

Plano, Texas

Suitable, close to downtown but still not the greatest neighborhood to be walking late at night

The cleaning fee wasn't worth the money. Place could use a good cleaning.

Owner's Response: Please let me know what needed attention. The property is cleaned thoroughly and professionally. We always make sure that it is fully stocked with paper products of all kinds, extra travel toiletries for our guests, and coffee with a choice of sweeteners and creamer. The yard is maintained by a service twice a month. I try to pay attention to every single detail so feedback would be greatly appreciated. Lavaca is an historic neighborhood that is experiencing an exuberant revitalization. Walking late at night in any city does require some caution and judgement, I would say, but I have walked in the neighborhood with a group of friends and their kids as late as 10pm, and we were fine.

Texas flair!

This house was adorable and lovingly decorated. Housed: Me, my husband, 3.5 month old, my brother, sister-in-law and their kids aged 1 and 18. Plenty of towels, linens and space for all. Having the keurig and pods was SO helpful. Our ONLY issue: The license plates on the floor was not conducive to a very active crawling one year old. We moved around a rug to cover some of them up. Otherwise a wonderful stay!

Owner's Response: I am so glad you enjoyed the house. Yes, it is true that the house is not totally baby-proofed. I'm so glad you found a suitable solution to protect those baby knees!

Simply the best in San Antonio.

  • 5 of 5

This place was awesome! Firstly, the house is well done - decorations were excellent (we got ideas for our own home from staying here), beds were comfortable (I had read another review about the pillows, and they were spot on - so cozy!), owner furnishes place with everything you could possibly need so you don't have to haul you own stuff here, and it is within walking distance of Tower of America, Riverwalk and Alamo.

The neighborhood you can tell is being remodeled - some older houses, some already completed like this one... My kids were a little uneasy about the variety of houses but the neighbors were all super friendly, and by the 3rd day even they felt comfortable. I didn't have any reservations about the area - the house was built in 1910 so lots of character! There is a local market a block down the road, we walked there and grabbed milk and a few other things. Prices were reasonable.

We decided to drive and park the first 2 days, which was between $5 to $10, due to the heat but on July 4th we walked. It was an easy walk, and straight path. We will come back and stay here during the spring and fall, and just walk. No reason to mess with parking - plus we would park the car and then get lost trying to find it again. LOL.

We brought our dogs on this trip; and we appreciated the owner allowing us to do so. The house didn't smell like pets; everyone takes care of their animals when staying here.

Highly recommend if you want a downtown house to stay in while visiting San Antonio.

Historic, renovated charm!

  • 5 of 5

I recently returned from a trip to San Antonio with my daughter, daughter-in-law, and five granddaughters. The house was perfect! As noted in other reviews, this is an old neighborhood. Naturally, there are going to be houses that are not very pleasant to gaze upon. However, it is my guess that it is probably one of the oldest neighborhoods near the downtown area. Overall, the entire neighborhood is undergoing revitalization. Most of the sidewalks and curbs appear to be fairly new, as well as a large number of houses that have been renovated and are cute, cute, cute!

As far as the house itself, it is very well done and decorated in what I would call a Texas-chic style. My daughter-in-law called it Austin-ish. For our particular situation, the house was perfect. Two women slept in the master, one in the middle bedroom with a full bed, and four girls slept in the front room with the double futons. The fifth child just turned two and we put her in a pack and play (we brought it) in the master bedroom. The kitchen was well-stocked and the living room was roomy.

We did walk to the Riverwalk the first night we were there. It seemed a little farther than one of the reviews made it out to be, however, even with three children, two of which were in a stroller, it was not too far. There is a large park near the downtow area.

We did throw a breaker late one night and didn't see the breaker box, but I called the next morning and my call was returned immediately! The box was in the hall, right in front of the bedroom. The only very minor negative was we had to drive around to the alley to put the trash in the can. The key is for a lock that has been replaced. It was no big deal and I didn't even say anything to the owner.

If you enjoy historic neighborhoods and gazing at old houses along your walk, you will thoroughly enjoy this house!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the wonderful review. I am so glad you enjoyed your stay. The Riverwalk and the Alamo are a 15 minute walk (about a mile). Some guests get Uber or taxis and some walk. I think it also depends on the time of year. I'm so glad you didn't mind the walk. I love it! I'm also glad the sleeping arrangements worked out well. The second bedroom has a queen size bed, not a full size, so there is plenty of room for multiple couples if needed. I am sorry you had to drive around the back to take out the trash. The combo for the gate lock was included in the check in info I sent. I will make that more prominent for future guests. Thanks for the feedback, and I hope you will visit again.

King William/ Lavaca historic district is a rather gentrified, very diverse, and unexpected part of San Antonio. The Lavaca neighborhood is the oldest existing neighborhood in San Antonio. It is bounded on the north by César E. Chávez Boulevard (formerly Durango), on the south by the Missouri-Kansas Railroad Line, on the east by IH-37, and on the west by South St. Mary’s Street. The area is going through modern renovations. It is a mix of old traditional and modern with properties that have remained untouched for decades alongside fully renovated homes. If you’ve got the time to take a stroll, bring sun block and a large lightweight umbrella for shade. It's away from the madness of the river walk but still very close by. Might remind you a little bit of some areas of New Orleans. Unique mix of German and Latin heritage. There are restored Victorian mansions right next to disused properties that might be up for sale. City bus line, VIA, is just minutes away. City-provided rental bicycles are also about a 15 minute walk away.

Very near Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center, Alamodome, River Center Mall, Blue Star Arts Complex, First Friday, Beethoven Maennerchor Halle, Missions & Historic Parks & Mission Trail, Steves Homestead, Villa Finale, The Alamo, La Villita, Market Square, Emily Morgan Hotel, Menger Hotel, Magik Theater, Hemisfair Park, Guenther House, Institute of Texan Clutures, McNay Art Museum, La Tuna, The Station Cafe, The Monterey, Liberty Bar, River Walk, Majestic Theater, Tito’s Mexican Restaurant, Rosario’s, AT&T Center, King William Fair, the million dollar home of Charles Butt, owner of the 4 billion dollar HEB grocery store is in the neighborhood.

Close to Pearl Brewery, San Antonio Western Shooting, Botanical Gardens, Japanese Tea Garden, Witte Museum, Kiddie Park, Symphony, San Antonio Zoo

Other attractions in the city are Fiesta Texas, Splashtown, Seaworld, Morgan's Wonderland...

I want to build many positive reviews on this vacation house. Please keep many things in mind. This area can get very hot in the summer.. When you plan on touring the area, if you are new to South Texas, walking any distance can be a challenge during summer afternoon hours. Upon reading all the reviews of houses for rent in San Antonio, I noticed one reviewer had actually left less stars for a very nice house because the city is hot at midday in the summer. Another negative home review was from area gentrification.

During the winter the city is usually only mildly chilly in the early morning & late evening, and beautiful all day long.

During the summer its opposite, usually beautiful early morning, late evening, and can get very hot midday. Please keep all of that in mind during your travels & have a great time.
