The "Crags" first opened its doors on the fourth of July 1914, making it the third oldest lodge in Estes Park. The founder, Joe Mills and his brother Enos, played a large part in establishing The Rocky Mountain National Park.

Estes Park is known as The Gateway to The Rockies, which is teeming with elk, deer, bighorn sheep, black bear and much more. It is full of culture with plenty of shopping and fun festivals that celebrate each season.

The Historic Crags Lodge is everything you would imagine in a quiet Colorado retreat. Discover The Historic Crags Lodge and become a part of an ongoing family history that began nearly 100 years ago.

We loved the Crags

  • 5 of 5

Historic hotel, nicely renovated but retaining the historic touches and artifacts in the lobby. Great views and location near the RMNP and some fun entertainment at the bottom of the mountain. Our room in a cabin was spacious with a huge window overlooking the balcony and hillside where we could lay in bed and watch the silent snow falling, first of the season.

Gorgeous rustic mountain lodge with great mountain views

  • 5 of 5

This is a timeshare property, not a commercial hotel. We stayed 3 nights and were able to opt out of any follow-up contact about timeshares. They don't include housekeeping services with short stays, but they are VERY friendly and responsive if you need anything. It was a wonderful place, with gorgeous views of the mountains, a deck, and a well-maintained pool and hot tub. Lobby and restaurant décor is somewhat spartan, and the lodge is definitely rustic but it is clean and well-maintained. Felt VERY welcoming.

No A/C, but we had a one-bedroom corner room with windows that opened and a fan in the closet, so we had wonderful cool mountain breezes. Window screens did not fit tightly, but there weren't many bugs, so it didn't really matter to us. Small, full kitchenette in our room. The hide-a-bed sofa was perhaps the most comfortable I have ever encountered. Parking lot might be difficult to maneuver with a very large vehicle - we did fine in a mid-sized SUV. There is an elevator for access to all floors. There is also a pool table and movie checkout available.

There is a restaurant on site, but we only got dessert there one night. Dessert portions were HUGE and could have easily been shared between 2 or even 3 (peach cobbler) people. The bar was small, with a limited selection of liquor and mixers.

I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a rustic mountain lodge. Wonderful place.

One night stay in Estes at Historic Crags Lodge

  • 4 of 5

The 100+ year old historic inn was beautiful, and the lady who checked us in was nice. We were only there for one night and left early the next day to hike in Rocky Mountain National Park, so we were not able to enjoy the pool and hot tub. The taco party looked like fun, but we had a late lunch so we were not hungry enough to eat then. We enjoyed watching the older adults and some children wearing the festive hats. Our room was nicely decorated and the bathroom was beautiful. The main reason I could not give 5 stars is the bed squeaked each time you touched it. Even when you set the suitcase down or sat down on it to change, it was a loud squeak. I could hardly sleep because if you turned over or moved at all, the bed frame made a loud noise. We got in late that night after dinner and went straight to bed, so I did not call the front desk. I am sure they might have moved us or helped in some way (because everyone was so kind), but we were honestly too tired to move. The coffee was excellent the next morning, so we just checked out and took a 9 mile hike anyway! The location was also nice and convenient, so I would like to visit again.
