About David Horst

30 years ago, I found this beautiful piece of Virginia and built a vacation home for my family. We spent nearly every weekend in the summer enjoying the lake where my kids learned to water ski and my family and friends had fun boating, fishing, jet skiing, tubing. We have had many family and friends gatherings that have given us amazing memories. After retirement, my wife and I relocated to the lake full time in a new house. I began my search for the perfect lake house to rent to people like you to make your own memories here. And so after two years of search, I believe this house offers everything families and friends will need. I want to make your vacation here as wonderful as my memories.

David Horst purchased this house in 2015

Why David Horst chose Smith Mountain Lake

If you haven't been to Smith Mountain Lake in the Blue Ridge Mountains, you are in for a treat. With 500 miles of shoreline and over 20,000 acres, the lake is formed by the convergence of the Roanoke and Blackwater Rivers with a hydroelectric dam controlling water flow. Blue green clear water is home to striped bass, large mouth and small mouth bass, crappie, blue gills, cat fish and lake trout for the fisherman Or perhaps you just want to soak up the sun on the dock or on a raft. Or just read a book on the deck. Whatever your pleasure, you will surely find it here at 'Tranquility Bay'.

What makes this house unique

The gentle slope to the water, the long winding driveway into the peaceful tranquility of seclusion. The views from nearly every room, deck, patio, and dock are wonderful. The sunsets equally as good. Spending 30 years here has taught me that being in a wide water cove is the best of both wakes from boats speeding by on the main channel and wonderful views.

The Perfect Getaway

We could not have been more pleased with our week stay in this home!

The home was clean, well stocked and well organized. Everything you needed was provided and more. The furnishings were comfortable, and offered a great set up for our family.

The bedrooms were great, the master was huge, and the beds were super comfortable, with nice linens, lots of pillows and warm and comfortable comforters.

The up-stairs living area was more than sufficient for our family of 6, and the lower floor, complete with laundry, huge bedroom, complete kitchen and living area….. plus an extended game room area was an amazing.

It would actually be great for two separate families sharing a home, and having all of the privacy you would need. The kitchen was expansive and complete, and open concept with a great and comfortable TV , not to mention the game tables. We couldn’t have asked for more.

Overall we loved this home and it honestly felt more like we were staying in our own family’s home…not your typical rental, by any means.

And the owner was incredible to work with. You could tell that his major concern was making sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed to make our stay as special as it was.

And then, there was the back-yard, fire-pit and dock area, which provided our family with an incredible place to relax and enjoy the incredible lake and amazing sunset. The space, the home and the owner could not have been more perfect.

We had a wonderful stay at Tranquility Bay! We have used vrbo several times, and this place by far the most comfortable and relaxing. The views from the house were amazing. We fished off the dock, catching tons of catfish and bass. We also paddle boarded, kayaked, and rented a pontoon boat for a day to see the rest of the lake. We ate at Mangoes restaurant (delicious!), but the kitchens was so well stocked with pans and pots that we ended up eating on the porch most of the stay. We also went horseback riding at Apaloosa Ranch. The house was beautiful and very well kept! The kitchen even had plastic ware for my 3 and 4 year olds to use, which was nice. The hammocks were a bonus, and the dock was perfect to relax on. Dave, the owner, was incredibly helpful. We highly recommend this property, and look forward to returning to it in the future.

We had a wonderful stay at Tranquility Bay! We spent most of our time outdoors since the property has tons amenities. The boat dock was great, with the seating areas and boat lift. The fire pit and deck/patio were also enjoyed. We were able to eat every meal we made outside (kitchen was fully stocked which was awesome). The lake was great for boating, wake boarding and just relaxing. I would highly recommend this property for your next vacation! Dave, homeowner, was great to work with and very helpful before, during and after our stay. Looking forward to returning!

*We were able to fit 6 adults and 2 children comfortably

Felt watched and discriminated against

My family has been renting on the lake for over 20 years. This was BY FAR one of the nicest plots to date. We were all so grateful for the personal touches afforded to us by the owners. The beds were dressed, there were ample towels and toiletries provided, and the interior was impeccably furnished. THAT BEING SAID....the owner of this property has poor "bedside manner" at BEST. He notes in the detail of the unit that he may pop by to check that everything is working well for you. That's just sugar coating the fact that he is checking up on the renters. There was also landscaping done during our visit in which the operator of the leaf blower came onto our patio and up the stairs on our deck. A guest of ours at the house was a smoker, and after seeing an ash bin with 20-some cigarette butts in it, assumed that was a proper place to put them. A couple hours after leaving the house in IMPECCABLE condition, the owner accosted my mother, a property manager of over 30 years, and accused us of burning paint, leaving butts, and burning a rug beyond repair...thusly threatening to take our security deposit. I've been in the catering business for several years, and using my mother's advice, will refuse to leave a venue (or rental) in less than better shape than received. This was no different. In the decades of renting, we've only received rave reviews from owners, commending us on our care and respect of their property. I don't want to discourage you from renting, because it truly is a treasure, just be aware of what you're getting yourself into....

Owner's Response: You only have to read the other 27 previous reviews to realize how erroneous this review is. I do not know the person that wrote this review, have never talked with her by phone, email, or text. This is a non smoking property. The signed rental agreement by this guest states in bold font "no smoking anywhere on the property, house, dock or grounds". There were cigarette butts, burns, and/or ashes on the patio, deck, dock, and grounds. Because we advertise this property as non smoking, the rug was discarded, and the dock, deck, and patio were thoroughly cleaned. I never "check" on guests. I do occasionally come by to say hello. But in this case, I was collecting trash which we do twice weekly (another service that other houses don't provide). There was an RV parked and set up in the driveway. Because it is in violation of my short term occupancy permit with the county for someone to be staying in the RV, I merely said hello and asked if someone was staying in the RV. The conversation was very cordial and lasted less than 5 minutes at the dock. As for the security deposit, we very rarely take any of someone's deposit. We expect occasional losses and breakages and do not charge people for them. And we only charged this guest $59 for the rug and paid the cleaning crew out of our own pocket for the extra time cleaning up the cigarette ashes and butts. We will also have to paint over the burns on the dock after the season is over at our cost. The guest was not charged for this either. As for the lawn service, to maintain the lawn in beautiful condition, we have it mowed and trimmed each week. Because this house is rented almost every day from May to October, it has to be mowed when guests are there. This takes about 1 hour for a 2-3 person crew. This guest did leave the inside of the house in excellent condition. We would rent to them again on the condition that they do not smoke or allow any of their guests to smoke in any area of the property.

Of course it depends on what you are looking for! A large and welcoming home in a perfect piece of property, maintained in to the highest standards. Premium furnishing, the most comfortable bed I ever slept in. Plenty of space for enjoying family and friends, both indoors and out. Then there is the lake and the setting of Tranquility Bay. You are in a peaceful cove, few neighbors, modest boat traffic, but you are minutes from the main channel, the dam, and all the activity of a vibrant water based community.

Your host is the most professional and caring person you will ever meet. Attention to detail to optimize your enjoyment, provision of all the 'toys' and electronics to keep you busy all the time. This is a turn key deal. Mr. Horst will see to it that your every need is provided, except when you run out of wine! Don't miss the Tuscany Tavern or Moosies for dining on the lake and in the area. We had a great time and will be back next year.

Based on the pictures alone, we knew it was going to be beautiful. It absolutely met and exceeded our expectations. There were 6 adults--my husband, my parents, and my brother and his wife. Also with us were our two kids, ages 8 and 11, who decided that they would like to live there! :) David was excellent to work with and made sure to answer any questions we had. The house is beautifully appointed--especially the bedrooms.

There are many amenities provided for guest--from the pool and foosball tables (kids favs) to wonderful rafts/floats to use in the water. Fishing off the dock was excellent for the kids--many bluegills to be caught, and even an occasional catfish. The water was calm and the kids swam without me having to be concerned about waves. The adults could have floated for hours on the calm cove.

We did do a charter fishing trip one morning for stripers, which was fun and a some of our group did a tour of the dam. Beyond that, we just couldn't bring ourselves to do much more than relax!

We've already booked a week for next year, and my mom wants to book two (too bad the rest of us have to work). I can't recommend this gem enough!
