About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps four (Queen size bed plus fold-out for kid

Welcome to Hawaii as it was in 1940, but with high speed 'premium' DSL WiFi, two hammocks and a bicycle. You are only 2 hours from the Liberia airport, and you can use a rental car, which you can pick up at the airport and drop in Nosara or we can send a van. This is a rustic surf town with dirt roads, friendly people, and lots of yoga and surfing going on. Your cottage is a 10 minute walk from the main surf beach, a five minute walk to the Yoga Institute, a two minute walk to the Spanish Language Institute, and "downtown." You are so close to downtown that, within a couple minutes walk, there is an ice cream shop, a mini-mart, a clinic, clothing stores, real estate offices, a bank, ATV and bike rentals, a lot of cafes and restaurants, and two surf shops, where you can rent boards and arrange for lessons. In the cottage, you have wireless high speed DSL internet, 24 hour on-call maintenence, local guides/maps, weekly housekeeping (daily housekeeping is optional), optional air conditioning (rarely needed), beach towels, ceiling fans, house linens are provided, a safe (will hold wallets, passports, 3 laptops), security (ornate ironwork on doors and windows), a blender, a juicer, a coffeemaker, a pressure cooker, a microwave, a refrigerator, a stove, a toaster, a rice cooker, optional personal laundry at $10 per load, a covered porch with two hammocks, off-road parking, outside shower, a large patio, patio furniture, and a beautiful yard. You are located above one of Nosara's many nature preserves and you will see a lot of wildlife. During the day the howler and spider monkeys play in the trees, pizotes wander through the yard (they love peanut butter), and tropical birds and butterflies fill the air around you. I walk to the beach twice a day to surf, and usually are not disappointed by what I find. Dawn and sunset surfing are the best if tides and winds are right. The locals are outstanding surfers, but they make room for visitors. In fact, I really can't say enough about the friendly, hospitable people of Nosara. They especially warm up to you when you try your Spanish on them. This is not just a rental house for income - I live here part of the year myself, and I have fixed it up to be cozy and complete. I don't scrimp on any of the amenities, because I like to fix things up nicely for myself as well. I bought this cottage after I had come to Nosara for years to surf and enjoy the food, scenery, monkeys, and local population. With the purchase of the cottage, I inherited a wonderful wife/husband team of managers, who are on the spot when anything needs attending to. They manage the gardens, the housekeeping, the laundry, the renter's needs, and renter scheduling.

Keywords: High speed DSL WiFi, surfing, surf boards, bungalow, casita, private, monkeys visit, pizotes visit, A/C, fans, shopping, night life, safe for valuables (can fit 3 laptops, wallets, purses), secure (attractive ironwork is standard for Nosara), housekeeping service, laundry service, hammocks, off-road parking, covered and lighted patio, yoga institute nearby, yoga mat for your use, fishing, wildlife, nature preserve, waterfalls, zipline, beach, hiking

About Jason Greenlee

I'm 68 and retired from fire fighting. I've been a surfer all my life, and spent my retirement savings on this place down in Costa Rica. To support my aquatic habits, I run three pet-friendly vacation rentals in San Antonio, Texas. I live with my two Vizslas, Jack and Jill, in a cottage behind one of my rentals. This 400 square foot bachelor/dog pad is the ultimate down-sizing. If we can't cram it into our little cottages in Nosara and San Antonio, we don't need it. Three of my places are solar-powered, by the way.

Jason Greenlee purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Jason Greenlee chose Playa Guiones

I chose to split my time between Costa Rica and San Antonio because they bring together the yin and the yang of my life. I love splitting my time between San Antonio Mexican restaurants, Starbucks, and USA Today, on the one hand, and hanging out in the lineup off the big palm tree in Nosara on the other hand. My dogs feel that I need to find a girlfriend (maybe someone that can cook their favorite meals?), but I keep telling them that finding someone that will put up with us is going to be a challenge!

What makes this cottage unique

You can hear the sound of the surf from my patio. Watching the surf cam (google Nosara Surf Live Webcam) and listening to the volume of the waves tips us off if it's time to wax up. This property sits just east of a large national reserve, so the patio looks out onto jungle that will be there for generations to come. Our neighbors are renters, so the faces change, people come and go, and I meet many interesting people who are all here for the same reasons I'm here - surfing and yoga. My favorite things to do here include going to the health food store and buying gluten-free brownies, walking around on the many dirt roads in the area, and going down to the beach for the daily sunset party. A lot of the locals show up and just mingle while watching the sunset, and, sometimes, people stay and light a bonfire. There's a nice, several hour, walk up the beach all the way to Ostional, the turtle beach (or you can drive).

Guestbook comments from the manager

The property management service responded promptly to my emails in an efficient and professional manner. The home is small, yet clean, comfortable and I felt safe staying there alone. It is situated on the jungle trail where you can view the howler monkeys from the patio. It's within walking distance to the Nosara Yoga Institute, to the beach, banks, and all the amenities. I liked the outside patio area which I found extremely peaceful and enjoyed being surrounded by the nature.

Since moving here, I've discovered lots of information on where to buy groceries, where to shop, where to get hard-to-find things, how to get about (I mostly walk, take the local bus or hitch-hike), where to get car rentals, where the best and cheapest meals can be found, and where the best surfing spots are. I have documented all this in a binder you will find when you arrive. You will probably meet Marleen, the cat that adopted me when I moved here. Marleen's original owner passed away five years ago, and she's made a living by wandering from place to place and begging meals. She must like my cat food, because she hasn't budged from my refrigerator top since wI first let her in. I leave cat food under the sink for her in case you're also a sucker for cute pussy cats. If I've run out of cat food , you can find it at the local mini-market down the path.

Never wanted to leave!!!

  • 4 of 5

Let me start by saying we absolutely LOVED our stay! If you are looking for a resort type stay, this is not where you want to be. If you are looking for the friendliest people, sun, surf and just kicking back this is the place for you. The vibe is very laid back and rustic. Here’s a few pointers: 1. Bring a flashlight. It gets very dark at night and sometimes the electric goes out for a few seconds to a few minutes you will not be able to see you hand in front of your face it’s so dark. It’s also good to have if you go out at night. 2. Buy some water when you get there. They turn the water off around 6 pm and turn it back on around 8am during the dry season. This only happened twice in the week we were there. You will need water to flush the toilet. Just a minor inconvenience in my opinion. 3. Everyone goes to the beach at night to watch the sunset. We didn’t discover this till our last two nights. Some of the restaurants offer live music in the evening so

Make reservations to have dinner and enjoy the music. The main shops close at 5, the tiny convenience store at 8 and everything else around 10. The only issue we encountered in our rental is the shower has no pressure. The outside shower does but not the inside. Our last day it was literally a trickle I had to use a pot and fill it up and dump it over my body. I informed Virginie of the issue. Also, there isn’t a washer it is broken so you have to wash your clothes by hand, go to the laundromat or pay someone to do it for you.

Review of 2 Surfboards

  • 3 of 5

We liked the property and it was very close to the town, within walking distance, less than a 5 minute walk. We stayed for two weeks and spent a lot of time on the porch swinging in the hammock. If you are looking for convenience to the town, where you would not need a car, this is the place for you.

There were some issues with the property that need to be addressed:

1. They added two more spots for surfboards if you brought your own. The unfortunate part of that was it interfered with getting into the bed. We hit our back/head a few times trying to get into bed.

2. The internet was pretty much non existent. They were working on the road to pave the main road so maybe that had something to do with it.

3. We did have some issues with the refrigerator, toilet that we needed to call maintenance. They were responsive but having the maintenance crew come while we were there was a bit inconvenient.

4. The inside shower pressure was very low. Because no one was renting next to us, we ended up using the outside shower which had great pressure.

5. Another hammock on the porch, one was not enough.

We loved the town of Guiones! There were a few good restaurants in walking distance and if needed, there was the TUK TUK (spelling??) to get you to the restaurants a bit farther away. I would highly recommend La Luna and El Chivo! There was also a great "pub" to get wonderful burgers and beer, Burgers and Brew. For juices, I would recommend Go Juice. Great juices and smoothies.

Magical Place

  • 5 of 5

After having a rough year, I took a solo trip down to Nosara to scout out the town for a father-son surfing trip. The owner, Jason was incredibly warm and helpful leading up to the trip - so much so we moved our conversation to private email.

The place is pristine, tucked away in nature but a very short walk, like 3 minutes, from the shops and restaurants of South Guiones on one side and the Bodhi Tree resort on the other. His porch lends itself to naps and quiet reflection amongst the flora and animal residents of the area. The interior is calming and clean.

I can't think of one thing that could have been better - his warmth and helpfulness as a host, the location, and the place itself. I will most definitely be returning.

A place to relax

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time. The weather was perfect and this was a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. Although we were in the jungle, we were within walking distance to the ocean and wonderful places to eat. Loved staying here.

Perfect for Two

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at this house. We were able to walk to the beach (even with large surfboards) as well as walk to various stores and restaurants. Great location. The jungle view off of the back porch was amazing and we saw a lot of monkeys and iguanas right from there. The hammock and boards were a nice touch. The kitchen had everything we needed. Everything was very secure and the owner and managers of the house were all very helpful. If we ever make it back to Costa Rica we would definitely stay here again.

You are a five minute walk on a nature trail from the Yoga Institute, and even closer to the Spanish Language Institute. Some of the local attractions include bird watching, surfing, treetop zip line, water falls, local restaurants, night life, shopping, paddleboarding, surfboard and paddleboard rentals, and grocery stores. Two health food stores/restaurants are within a two minute walk, the beach is a 10 minute walk, there are companies that will take you fishing, scuba diving, canoeing, paddleboarding, ultralight airplane, and horseback riding. The nearest beach is Guiones Beach, which is the best surfing in the area. The cottage is approximately 50 square meters and has a large and comfortable patio. The view is beautiful and gives you plenty of privacy. There is a small clinic nearby in case of emergencies with a life flight available. You are also near surf shops, an ice cream store, three or four surfing schools, car rentals, ATV rentals, bike rentals, several clothing stores, a mini-mart, a bakery, a coffee shop and a bank. Everyone speaks English.

Traveling to Nosara.

1. The best way to come to Nosara from Liberia Airport with a rental car:

We don't advise driving during nighttime when you are not familiar with the roads. We can arrange transport from the airport to Nosara. The trip takes 2-2.5 hours. If you want to rent a car, we advise you rent a GPS from the rental car company. With the GPS, you can at least enter "Nosara" or "Playa Guiones". Ask the car rental agent, and he will help you with the GPS. Once you are at the beach, the nearest location to the cottage that is easy to find is Cafe de Paris. If you don't use a GPS, here's what to do: Go south on Highway 21 to Nicoya. Then take Highway 150 south toward Samara. About 5 kms before Samara, you will see, on your left, National Rent a Car and Surfing Nosara Real Estate signs. Slow down. Then you will see a gas station and next a hardware store on your left. Across from the hardware store, to your right, is the partially paved dirt road to Nosara. If you get to Samara, you went too far. Once on the road to Nosara, you will pass Playa Garza. After Playa Garza, you will see a yoga institute on the left, and you will be coming into the beach area. Once you pass the yoga institute, look for a small sign on your left hand saying Casa Sombra. Turn in and go down a short hill. Your cottage is the center cottage. Virginie will be expecting you, but she needs to know the time and date of your arrival. If you have a phone, please give Virginie a call from Garza so she can meet at the house. If not, stop at Organico near the cottage. Organico is a mini market located on the main road on your right hand about 200m past the sign Casa Sombra, just before Coconut Harry's Surfshop. Organico will let you use their phone. Her cell is (+506) 8318.7840.

2. The best way to come to Nosara from San Jose with a rental car:

We can arrange transport from San Jose to Nosara. If you drive, we don't advise driving at night if you are not familiar with the roads. If you want to drive, we advise renting a GPS from the rental car agency. The trip takes 4 to 6 hours. From San Jose, take Route 27, a toll way, in the direction of Puntarenas. From Puntarenas follow Liberia-Las Canas, you will have left the Route 27 and are now on Panamerican or Route 1, lots of traffic, one lane, lots of curves, drive will follow this road for about 40 km (1 hour). At Restaurant LAS TRES HERMANAS (has lots of advertising along the road) Grill restaurant with giant bull statue and a gas station, turn left towards NICOYA. You will cross the Peninsula at the Puente de la Amistad. There are amazing views here. At low tide you can see a bunch of big crocs sunbathing. This is a nice stop. Continue on that road, at a T crossroads, Go right. When you get to Nicoya, turn left (at Burger King). Go aross town straight ahead. Follow SAMARA. About 5 kms before Samara, you will see, on your left National Rent a Car and Surfing Nosara Real Estate signs. Slow down. You will see a gas station and a hardware store on the left. Across from the hardware store, to your right, is the partially paved dirt road to Nosara. Follow that dirt road for about 25 kms. Don't follow Google, it will send you to Samara first then through another dirt road where you will have to cross a river and will most probably get stuck in with your car, unless you want some adventure. We usually meet at the Organico Market, just before Coconut Harry's surf shop and National Rent A Car, and call us from there. Organico will let you use their phone. Our cell phone is 8318 7840 or 8309 8194 and we would appreciate a call if you are delayed in any ways.
