Why Cathy Havard chose Dauphin Island

Dauphin Island, a wonder of nature and full of history is a barrier island on the Gulf . The population is about 1,300. The town is included in the Mobile metropolitan statistical area. The island was named for Louis XIV's great-grandson and heir, the Dauphin. Our 'laid-back' atmosphere is prized by folks who enjoy serenity and natural beauty.

The eastern, wider portion of the island, is shaded by thick stands of maritime pine trees, but the narrow, western part of the island features scrub growth and few trees.

Dauphin Island is home to Fort Gaines, Dauphin Island Sea Lab, The Estuarium public aquarium, the Dauphin Island Airport, boat ramps, a fishing pier located on the Island's eastern end, historic sites, several restaurants. Beaches attract tourism, and fishing is a popular activity in the waters around the island. The island is connected to the mainland by a 3.5 mile long bridge.

Although the entire island is a bird sanctuary, the main one is the 164-acre Audubon Bird Sanctuary. Dauphin Island is the first landfall encountered by many birds as they migrate north from Central and South America, and as a consequence many species can be found resting there before continuing their journey.

In 1519, the Spanish explorer Alonso Álvarez de Pineda was the first documented European to visit, staying long enough to map the island with remarkable accuracy.

The island's French history began on January 31, 1699, when the explorer Pierre Le Moyne, sieur d'Iberville, D'Iberville later decided to locate a port for Fort Louis de La Louisiane (Mobile). Fort Gaines on the eastern tip of the island was built between 1821 and 1848. It was occupied by Confederate forces in 1861, and captured by Federal troops during the Battle of Mobile Bay. The phrase, 'Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead,' was spoken by U. S. Admiral David Farragut just a few hundred yards from Dauphin Island's shore.

We love 'The Island' as much as we know you will!

What makes this cottage unique

The old walled Fort Gaines is on the east end of Dauphin Island. A ferry from nearby Fort Morgan in Gulf Shores brings both vehicles and pedestrians to the island. One of the closest attractions to the ferry dock is The Estuarium, located at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab...a fresh- and saltwater aquarium highlighting species native to coastal Alabama.

Gorgeous house, gorgeous location!

  • 5 of 5

A great experience! We brought our toddler and some friends for a long weekend and everyone enjoyed it. The living space was perfect for our group (the kitchen is very nicely outfitted with tools and utensils), and all the bedrooms were roomy & comfortable. The big deck is a great place to sit and look at the water, and it's a quick jaunt down the steps to play in the sand. Everyone had an excellent time and felt grateful to have found such a lovely spot for our vacation.

Great Vacation House

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week on Dauphn Island. Salty Piece of Land is a beautiful, clean house right on the gulf.

The only drawback was that there are old wooden poles in the water right in front of the property that should be removed so that you can swim right in front of the house.

Great new construction with nicer than normal updated materials.

I really enjoyed this property and the placement on the beach. Nothing could have been better except the weather and I'm sure Cathy could not control the tropical storm. Please do not hesitate to rent!!!!!!

May 7-14

This was our first trip to Dauphin Island and we are already looking forward to coming back hopefully with out the construction and roaches. We really enjoyed the beach and the location of the house on the island. We cooked most of the time and only ate out 3 times JT's, Island Rainbow, and Pirates bar. All the food was great I don't think we had any issues with our service everyone was very friendly. We also visited the Sea lab which was amazing it is small so maybe 1-1.5 hrs we spent there but my 4 yr really enjoyed it. The ferry across the bay is something I highly recommend doing also we seen lots of dolphin and it was a fun ride. Now the bad stuff and the reason for knocking my review down to a 4 star rating. When we arrived we noticed we had two new homes being built directly behind our rental. Most of the time it wasn't an issue but the noise and constant trash being thrown down by the workers got old. My kid was constantly picking up cigarette butts, rusty nails, and pieces of wood. Several days we got blocked in and couldn't get out of the driveway we had to ask everyone to move. My wife was getting tired of being starred at constantly every time she came out in her bikini. Monday the workers were on the job less then one hour and when we came out to play in the sand they all stopped working and took a thirty minute break starring at my wife. Then about mid week we started seeing roaches in the house. We killed maybe 6-8 but several still got away we found them mostly in the bathrooms and kitchen. Overall we loved the island and people we meet so much that we still left with good memories and for the most part really enjoyed the trip. I would definitely go back and for anyone reading this review if you want to relax and just chill Dauphin Island is the place to go. Oh and one more thing watch out for the stairs off the back deck lots of sharp edges and splinters trust me we know.

Owner's Response: Hi, Thank you so much for your review of the Island and our rental property. The Island is a very special place and is especially great if you wish to come and relax and get away from it all. Unfortunately there is construction on the West End in various places and it is not something we can control (we do mention in our guest license agreement that construction close or next to your property is out of our control). We do have monthly pest control for all of our properties and can have the pest control company out ( usually the next day ) if there is an issue. Sorry you had this issue and hope this will not stop you from visiting our Island again. Your rental on Tonty was constructed within the last year and splinters are not common in new construction so this is something we will investigate. Thank you so much for making us aware of your issues. Dauphin Island Real Estate, Inc.

Absolute Paradise

  • 5 of 5

First...Dauphin Island. DI is paradise. So laid back. The perfect place to spend a week unwinding and relaxing. Plenty to do yet away from the hustle and bustle of the more tourist-y locales. We loved exploring Ft. Gaines and the Estuarium was awesome! We also did quite a bit of shopping in the local shops...the Happy Octopus was our favorite! Restaurants were great...I'm already craving the Sno-Balls at Island Rainbow. Ship & Shore has everything you could need...but be ready for the prices. I recommend a trip to Walmart at the intersection of I-10 and 193 about 40 minutes north of the island.

Now....this gorgeous house. It is EXACTLY as advertised. Everything is provided to make your stay as relaxing as possible. Plenty of space to spread out in and the furnishings are beautiful. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need...from cutting boards, to pots and pans (including a HUGE stock pot and 2 griddles!) , to just about any utensil that you could need. Even the dishes are beautiful. Beds are comfortable, linens are very nice and plentiful. Wifi was not blazing fast (streaming really wasn't an option)...but was consistently available. We never had any troubles with basic needs through our entire stay. TVs were awesome...especially for winding down with some March Madness.

Location of the house is perfect....a spectacular stretch of gulf-side beach is at the base of your deck steps. It's an easy walk up to the West End beach for gorgeous sunset views. Quick drive to the other end of the island for local attractions, snacks and local shopping.

To sum took us all of 10 minutes to decide that we would be reserving this house for the next Spring Break vacation. It was worth every dime and every moment spent in the car to get there!
