Overview

Photos and Description of this Reading holiday farmhouse

3 bedroom/3 bathroom, spacious and charming vacation rental

If you are looking for a true Vermont experience in a quaint and charming farmhouse, Horse and Hound may be just right for you. People say they like it here because of the surroundings, the cozy and spacious feel of our home, comfortable beds and linens, and our proximity to GMHA. Nearby ski resorts include Suicide Six, Okemo, and Killington; and a Nordic ski center at the Woodstock Inn and Resort. Whether you wish to lounge under the apple tree with a book, grill on the back deck, take a dip in a nearby swimming hole, or hit the slopes for your vacation week, our hope is that you get to have fun, rest, and play, while feeling right at home.

This rental which we call the "Main House" of Horse and Hound Farmhouse is the larger portion of an 1800's farmhouse in rural Vermont. The Main House rental consists of 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 living room areas, and a spacious kitchen. This rental is attached to another separate part of the farmhouse called "The West End" which has 3 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a kitchen, and a separate back entrance for "West End" guests. The West End will not be a part of your rental. An interior door separates the Main House from the West End. The owner lives in the upstairs portion of the West End and rents nightly rooms in the downstairs portion of the West End. If you have more people in your party and would like to rent a West End Room in addition to the Main House rental, please inquire directly.

The 9 acre property and small pond are shared between Main House guests, West End guests, and the owner. On property, there are 3 horses, 3 goats, 2 dogs, and 2 barn cats. Our two golden retrievers roam the property freely so this rental is ideal for families or groups who love animals and dogs. If a vacation rental with property animals is not your ideal situation, we are happy to offer referrals to other local rentals. We consider allowing two guest dogs in the Main House by permission only. We enforce the usual breed restrictions and ask that you keep them in the central living room during the day.

We have memory foam cots, a high chair, and portable cribs available (Graco Pack and Play). Please reserve in advance, as we provide these for West End guests and Main House guests depending on need.

Tayloe Denton purchased this farmhouse in 2014

Why Tayloe Denton chose Ludlow / Okemo Mountain Area

I saw the beams in the ceilings, light pouring in through windows, open spaces, the old wide board pine floors, and the weathered barn in the yard. The view in the back really spoke to me. I felt at peace and drawn to stay here -- forever. I planned on renting a portion of the house from the time that I bought it but I never imagined I would have such a great time outfitting it for people to enjoy their stay. I have invested in comfortable mattresses and linens because I love resting well when on a journey and hope you will too! During the pre-opening months, I have invited friends to visit and it has given me great pleasure to provide a space where people can relax and enjoy the simplicity of a rural life.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The property is 6 miles from GMHA and is situated on the horse trail system. We do have a barn but will not be renting stalls this year. If you are interested in renting a stall in the future, let us know. We are trying to gauge interest in this amenity. You can rent stalls through GMHA if you are interested in a trail ride or event this year.

Great Place for a Quiet Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We are three middle-aged high school friends who pick a spot annually to meet up for a long weekend. We generally pick a spot to serve as home base while we find fun activities nearby. This year we chose Vermont and found this wonderful spot, the Horse and Hound. The house is a great place to have a retreat and it is quite the bargain. It was perfect for us as we each had our own bedroom and en suite bathroom. There was ample space to spread out with a kitchen serving as the center of the house. Off the kitchen is a dining room and a living/family room where we mostly hung out. There were also other rooms that we never even used, but could easily be used if there are more than three guests. The space would be perfect for three couples or an extended family. One really cool space is the yoga studio built above the dining/living room space. It's very spacious with lots of windows that provide lots of natural light. Also ventilation is good if you open the windows.

The weather was wonderful while we were there, so we also got to hang out on the deck, which overlooks a beautiful horse pasture with a pond at the bottom of the hill. Two nights we used the outdoor BBQ and the kitchen to make meals in. The house has all the basic amenities and then some.

If you are a lover of animals, there are two friendly golden retrievers, Huckleberry and Shelby, who love to play fetch, two black and white cats and two majestic horses. You can choose to engage with them or not. They don't bother anyone either.

We saved the best for last...Tayloe, the owner, who was a wonderful host. She is available without being intrusive in case you need recommendations. She sent us on a strenuous hike nearby up Mt. Ascutney, which was what we were looking for and then suggested that we reward ourselves with dinner at Keeper's Cafe, a great restaurant with good food only 2 miles away from the house, We also appreciated her touches around the house.

Vermont vacation

  • 5 of 5

The Horse and Hound Farmhouse is a great place to enjoy a Vermont vacation. The host, Tayloe, was warm and welcoming. Tayloe made us feel at home the moment we arrived and addressed every question we had.

The house is very clean, spacious, and nicely decorated. The kitchen was well stocked with essential equipment and supplies. There were many comfortable rooms for our guests to gather and also allowed us to spread out. The bedrooms were comfortable with nice linens; each bedroom had its own bathroom. The internet was great for streaming.

My wife and I enjoy walking Vermont country roads and trails and found this location to offered both. We enjoyed spending time on the outside deck which overlooked scenic fields. Our son’s dog and Tayloe’s two beautiful golden retrievers had a grand time chasing balls in the back yard. We highly recommend the Horse and Hound for family gatherings!

Beautiful horse farm in country.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Horse and Hound while in VT for a family ski trip. The home was extremely clean, comfortable, thoughtfully decorated and more than roomy enough for 6 adults and 3 dogs. I can't say enough about the owner, Tayloe. She was very attentive and did everything in her power to help make this trip a memorable one. It is obvious she takes great pride in her home and ensuring that her guests have a great experience. The house was fully stocked with everything we could possibly need which was really appreciated. We traveled 9 hours with our cars full of ski equipment so it was nice to have all the necessities already there. From the beginning Tayloe kept the lines of communication open and was very quick to respond to any emails or texts. Having never rented through HomeAway I found this very comforting.

While there we went skiing at Okemo which is approximately 25 minutes away. We also visited Woodstock and Quechee which are about the same distance. Tayloe had many recommendations for restaurants, shops and points of interest. Since we are not familiar with the area we really appreciated having this information.

If you're looking for a quiet farmhouse in the country this home has it all. If we ever find ourselves in Vermont again we will definitely stay at Horse and Hound.

A wonderful find!

  • 5 of 5

We booked Horse and Hound Farmhouse for a family ski trip. We could not have been happier with our decision. Tayloe has gone above and beyond to create a comfortable, homey, well appointed, super clean place that the second you arrive, you will feel right at home. The property is truly a home away from home. The kitchen is fully equipped. We spent Christmas there and celebrated with several big meals. We found everything we needed. The beds are comfy, and offer nice linens and pillows. No need to bring your own. There is a great wood stove, and a super cozy living area overlooking the large yard, private pond, and mountains in the distance. Tayloe even set up a Christmas tree for us! It is this attention to detail, and thoughtfulness that make Horse and Hound different from other places to stay. It was hard to leave, and we look forward to returning again soon!

Fantastic Hidden Treasure

  • 5 of 5

This is a fantastic place that far exceeded our expectations. The owner is great and has wonderful communication and attention to detail. The house is beautiful, historic, cozy, and charming. We had 3 couples and there was more than enough space, private bedrooms with on-suite baths, 2 large living areas including a large kitchen great room space with wood burning stove. The base house could easily sleep 8-9 and 10-12 if you are a bit creative.

We plan to stay here again. The clean, well maintained, recently updated historic home and attention to detail with bath robes, luxury towels and local soaps is more than we could have expected. There is a fantastic local restaurant just down the street and the house is minutes from the Equine center and South Woodstock store (dont miss this hidden treasure). We spent an afternoon the Woodstock and drove to see Long Trail brewery. The Woodstock farmers market just out of town on 104 west is a great place to grab breakfast.

This home is a great place to experience much of what Vermont has to offer all in one stay. A bit of rural living without being too far out, a beautiful historic home with all of the amenities of modern living, a beautiful back road short drive from some great places to see and spend the day, a short drive to the local corner store, and the around the corner full service restaurant. We highly recommend this home you wont be sorry.

We are 11.5 miles from Woodstock and 14 miles from Ludlow (home of Okemo Mountain). Woodstock has several restaurants, shops, and a couple of cafes. A quaint town on route to Killington, Woodstock often hosts events on 'The Green' in the center of town such as farmer's market, Turkey Trot, a horse parade over the holidays, ice sculptures in winter, etc. Ludlow also has restaurants that you can enjoy after a day on the mountain. Just two miles from the house, you will find Keeper's Cafe which is a local favorite in the countryside. You will find local amenities in Woodstock such as a fitness center, massage therapists, groceries (Macs), Ottaquechee Health Center, Woodstock Inn and Resort (spa, golf, cross country skiing, recreation center) and other services. In South Woodstock, you can go for a sleigh ride by calling Kedron Valley Stables, and there is also a restaurant and Kedron Valley Inn. We love breakfast at the South Woodstock general store -- good breakfast sandwiches and coffee where you will find the locals and GMHA eventers. The closest hospital is Ascutney in Windsor which is about 30 minutes drive and the next closest hospital is Dartmouth Hitchcock in Lebanon, NH, at about an hour drive.
