Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Linda,

We had such an amazing vacation! James Ross River Plantation is awesome! My husband, son-in-law and grandkids were in their glory fishing off the pier. Of course we spent a lot of time in the pool (also amazing). I loved the dining room (the pictures don't do it justice)! It was wonderful to be able to eat our meals together. The beds were so comfortable, we all slept well. Thank you for sharing this beautiful property! We hope to be back next year.

Amazing Getaway in a Picture Perfect Setting!!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at the James Ross River Plantation over the past three years and we would absolutely come back again! The expansive waterfront property with gorgeous views overlooking Robinson Creek leading out to the Rappahannock River. A house with loads of character and charm and was so well kept with comforts of home. The incredible pool house with sun deck and we just couldn’t get over the ceiling beams and woodwork that made it such a neat place to hang out in the evenings poolside. Sitting outside in the Adirondack chairs overlooking the creek watching the sunrises and sunsets. Kayaking and canoeing, fishing from the docks, cycling into the Town of Urbanna, seafood at the Urbanna Seafood Restaurant and Raw Bar just up the creek. Such a fun and relaxing getaway and great way to end our summer!!

Great layout private. Needs freshening up

  • 4 of 5

Pool jets need fixed,we reported this but it was an item that was known. Why hadn't it been fixed? needs new linen all beds all worn out with tears and holes really bad, needs new pillows both bed and throw, lots of outdoor lights don't work, paperwork showed where to sign up to fish free and this is wrong that's just a fishing registration not a license to fish. Still have to buy license so it's misleading. Grass not cut until we called on Friday to ask about it. The big living room needs something done with the mildew or mold in the ceiling where it looks dirty. That room smells musky and ceiling looks bad. Entire outside needs more lights for night. We enjoyed our stay but the items above need addressed . The upkeep of the property seems lacking in items that would improve rentals It's beautiful old house but even though it's old it appears not to be kept up

This place is one of a kind!

  • 5 of 5

We've been doing these large family reunions for years now, 10 people, 3 generations! We've done 3 different places and it would be a lie if this property or ANY property we've rented are perfect. But this house IS pretty darned incredible! I wish the beds were a bit better (VERY hard, and I have a back issue!) but when you look at that MAGNIFICENT indoor pool area (I wish there was a "Ten-Star" for this, because I'd give that!) alone, it really tips the scale in that area of VA, we know that. It's HOT and steamy in July, and swimming in a HUGE pool, at a comfy temp, out of the sun is PRICELESS! Having the 2 boats is GOLD, we ALL enjoyed them. I had concerns from the pics that the kitchen size would work for us but they're a little deceptive, it's PLENTY big enough for huge meals for hungry guests! And the pics don't show the Butler's Pantry OR the large area with the fridge, a sink and storage. The living room is ALL you could want for TV, conversation and even puzzle-building in the outer room there.

It is TOTALLY private, you feel like you're on an island! The little town nearby has some surprises, like the Urbanna Seafood Market AND a little place called "Something Different" which had GREAT smoked meats and HOECAKES, something we'd never had before! They have among the best pies and desserts we've ever had, anywhere, with pies to GO! OMG we got 2 for dessert 1 night and nearly died they were so good!

I could go on and on, but we WILL be doing this again next Summer, Linda! Oh BTW, Linda is FABULOUS at getting you info you need! I was a huge pest, bombing her with question after question, and she got RIGHT back to me! I'm sorry you didn't make it by Linda for a beer or glass of wine, I may make that a condition for NEXT Summer that you do! LOVED Chris the pool guy though, what a character!!!

See you next Summer?!

Impossible to describe, property is simply amazing. Adults & kids alike were in heaven.

  • 5 of 5

The pictures do not do this home/property justice, it's an amazing place! The house fit all of us comfortably, we cooked every afternoon & night. Kids were in the pool all day/everyday. Took boat rides with Capt Phil, crabbed and fished off the dock, enjoyed the kayak & canoe and even brought 3 SUP's which were in constant use. You can even take them to the Seafood Market & Bar just down the river. Waterfront scene is beautiful, surrounded on 3 sides, we'll be back!

Staying at the Jame Ross is like time traveling back to the peace and calm of old Tidewater Virginia

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful celebration of our 45th anniversary at James Ross with our children and grandchildren. Our grandchildren wanted to live there forever. Their video devices were quickly replaced with hours of swimming in the great pool, fishing, watching birds and lots of wildlife, walking on the piers, fire pit and s'mores, swinging on tree swing, talking and snuggling with their grandparents as we sat by the water. Our family disconnected from the outside world and connected to each other. We enjoyed living in a wonderful old house with lots of interesting rooms and furnishings. The downstairs gun room turned into half bath was a little spooky to grandkids! They loved the porchs, staircase and comfy bedrooms. We enjoyed picking up delicious seafood by boat and car from nearby Urbanna Seafood Restaurant.Bring your family to the James Ross and create memories of enjoying nature and time together.
