3 Bedroom cottage in an historical house from 1830's with a small secondary old horse barn with a car port and ample room for vacation sporting gear and bicyles. The cottage is less an a quarter mile to the town center and less than a quarter mile to beaches. The setting is quiet and has a large shaded lawn. It is surrounded by a working organic farm where vegetables can be picked weekly for a small fee. The kitchen is large and supports the dinner table and a small pantry. Off the kitchen is a covered deck that has a grill and opens out to the shaded lawn area. The bathroom has a shower and combo washer / dryer unit. A second outdoor shower functions during the summer months. The second floor has two bedrooms. The first floor has a master bedroom and a small anti~room, which can be an office or a babies room off the master bedroom. The living room is large and has an antique wood stove. The house has an internet connection and wifi. An AT&T cell tower is a quarter mile away so the house gets generally excellent cellphone reception. Season firewood is available from the farm local farmer who manages the property. In any direction are miles of easy bicyling excursions to explore the old turn of the century harbour or to enjoy any number of access points to some of New Englands finest beaches. Fishing off the large granite rock out croppings is some of the best sport fishing in the area. South Shore Beach has arguably some of the best surfing in RI. The five restaurants in the area boast of their access and use of local fare from vegetables, meats, poultry and fish! A trip to historical Newport is just 45 mins away. New Bedford and the Whaling Museum is an hours drive from the homestead. Lastly, we are an hour / fifteen minutes from Greene Airport in Providence, RI
Little Compton, RI is a stunningly beautiful, pastoral place with the magical light that you can only find on a peninsula and this 1830's farmhouse, placed on a quiet farm not far from a town beach was a great place to experience that beauty. There are 3 bedrooms that will sleep 8, a large open living room and large dining table so you can bring family and friends along. There's even a small washer/dryer unit. Skip, the manager, was incredibly helpful and accommodating. The house is just over a mile from Little Compton's Commons where you can hang out on the Art Cafe's lawn with pastry and a great cup of coffee or peruse/buy art treasures from it's gallery. You can mail your postcards home, have yummy fish and chips at the Commons Lunch or grab a few groceries, a sandwich or gifts at Wilbur's General Store. If you are looking to spend quiet time walking woodsy paths, sandy (or rocky) beaches, sailing, biking through tree- or farm-lined country roads and exploring small southern New England towns, beautiful but not Disney precious and stuffed with tourists, or you just want to be in a place that gives you that feeling of being somewhere lost in a time that probably never existed, this is the perfect place to do it. You could happily write a novel here.
We stayed in the old farm house during the last week of August 2016. The proximity of the ocean and the quite atmosphere of Little Compton made our stay unforgettable. We biked to the South Shore beach or to the Commons; the kids enjoyed playing outside in the yard, or in the school’s playground. We also loved going to Sakonnet Point Beach, especially during low tide time when we could walk all the way to the end of the point.
The house was clean and roomy for 2 families with young kids. There were plenty of dishes and kitchen utensils to prepare all our meals there. The grill was also working great. We bought fresh produce and eggs from the house keepers (the owners of Wishing Stone Farm – a great farm stand during the weekend and a magical garden for the kids to play in) and anything else we needed we found in the general store. Also, the internet connection was very good. It was easy to reach Skip and Liz and they were very helpful.
We LOVED the outdoor shower! It was the highlight of the house. However, having one bathroom for two families was a challenge. We were surprised that the owners didn’t provide more than 2 rolls of toilet paper. Since we had young kids (baby and preschoolers) we used the washer and drier couple of times. You need to bring your own detergent!
Thank you Liz and Skip, we had a great week.
We loved our vacation at this house. The location is fantastic: a short drive to the beach and the commons; surrounded by quiet, picturesque farmland. Excellent wifi, lots of room, well furnished, a beautiful yard, modern washer and dryer, fire pit and cool breezes all day and night made for a spectacular vacation. Our daughter loved the chickens kept on the property, all of the butterflies in the fields and the room to run!
We really enjoyed our stay at this house. It was very comfortable and has everything that you may need. It's about 15 minute walk to the beach -about a mile away. WIFI was fast and good cell phone signal in the house. I would definitely recommend this house and would stay there again.
New Bedford 12 miles away has great historic sites and museums; i.e.. The Whaling Museum. The town of Little Compton has it own historic colonial cottage restored homestead. Driving through town on can see at every turn broad coastal vistas punctuated with views of Lighthouses and other seaside points of interest.
