Just a few miles south of Lead, SD in the heart of the northern Black Hills, you'll find this wonderfully appointed, cozy cabin. The cabin is built in the classic style with logs and natural wood but it is anything but rustic. It features all the amenities of home but with a forest retreat flare. One of the best (and somewhat hard to find) features is the wood burning fireplace. There's nothing like the heat and ambiance from the soft light, smell, and sound of wood crackling on chilly fall nights and mornings. The cabin features two full bathrooms each with a shower and the main level BR also has a large jet tub. One Queen BR on the main offers privacy while 3 additional queen beds in the loft for additional sleepers. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to cook meals, make coffee and mix drinks. There is an ice maker (full of ice) in the fridge freezer which was handy. Motion sensing lights upon entering the cabin are a nice touch to keep one from scrambling around in the dark. Most recessed lights have dimmers which also adds a nice touch. There is a large flat screen TV (mostly not used) in the main cabin area also if kids (or adults) want to plug back in for a bit. A large wrap around deck allows for sitting outside to read, chat, or simply take in the sights of the beautiful surrounding forest. Quite a few steps to gain a entrance to the cabin may make it a poor choice for handicapped or disabled people. For explorers, a Mickelson trail entry point is just a mile down the road, and of course, the most beautiful scenery in the entire hills (Spearfish Canyon) is just a 25 minute drive away. Overall, this is a great spot centrally located for northern Black Hills activities. It is an hour from the larger tourist spots like Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Needles Highway if you're looking to visit those spots. Overall my wife and I would highly recommend Eagles Lair and we certainly would return.
Eagle's Lair Cabin is a wonderful home nestled in a beautiful setting! There are trees surrounding the home and a babbling brook across the road that you can hear from the cabin. We saw many deer in the trees behind the cabin in the morning and evening. The home was clean and well equipped for cooking meals. There is a very nice gas grill on the deck. We were pleased that the home sits far enough away from neighboring houses, giving good privacy. We heard distant noise from neighbors but never even saw anyone! This house was perfect for a family with teenagers. The teens slept in the loft (three queen size beds!), and parents in the main-floor bedroom. The master even has a small deck. Having two bathrooms was also a great feature for our family. There are a number of steps to enter the cabin, a consideration to make as you need to haul things in and out. It is not air conditioned, but it wasn't necessary, even in late July/early August as the nights are cool. The property is at least 5 miles (all gravel but well maintained) off the main highway, and about 20 minutes from the closest towns (Lead and Deadwood). Definitely well into the beautiful Black Hills. It's a little more than an hour to Mt. Rushmore, Hill City, and other tourist attractions in that area. We enjoyed our time in this cabin and would rent again!
