What do gold and Dark Matter have in common? Well, for starters, both are mined out of Lead's Homestake Mine. This retired gold mine (America's longest operating) has been converted into a National Science Foundation laboratory for exploring some of the universe’s most elusive and unknown substances—very similar to what gold once was. The mine's deep and frigid caverns provide the perfect environment for scientists to explore something that is believed to be responsible for much of the material world we know today. This shift in the mine’s use is only one of many examples of how Lead’s preserved history is being used for modern purposes. Another good example is this exact cabin you’re looking at!
Consider how this cabin’s rustic, mining-era décor is balanced by modern technology like flat screen TVs, a Blue-Ray and DVD player, and satellite access. Not to mention the use of track lighting and gorgeous Victorian Era-inspired fixtures that cast a warm glow on the richly toned wood and leather furniture.
Adding to this ambiance is the floor-to-ceiling river-stone fireplace that lends an air of rusticity to the spacious living area while you sit back and enjoy television, a book, or casual conversation with family or friends. You’ll also love the multifunctional and open kitchen and bar area, which makes meal preparation and socializing both easy and fun.
On the cabin’s lower-level is a lounge area with another TV, games, air hockey and ping-pong tables, and an additional fireplace as well. When the day draws to an end, head out to the private hot tub to soak and relax.
However tempting it may be to stay at this cabin the entire time, you won’t want to miss out on the area’s exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities, such as Terry Peak Ski Area where you can ski in the winter and mountain bike in the summer, or simply strap on cross-country skis or hop onto a snowmobile right from the cabin’s front door. And while you’re here, you might as well head down to Lead to dine at one of the many saloons, or maybe even sneak a peak into the Dark Matter labs at Homestake!

This was our dream home. It was a shame that there was so much to see out there and we couldn't just hang out more at the cabin the whole time. Was so clean and comfortable with a beautiful private deck and hot tub, air hockey, foosball, and pingpong tables that we enjoyed playing with our teenage boys. It is moments away from a ski resort and surrounded by Aspen and Ponderosa Pine trees so it feels like there is no one around for miles.
Spacious, quiet, breath-taking views. Teenaged boys LOVED the man cave- rec room on the lower level. *Bonus to have a laundry room. Relaxing outdoors in the hot tub in the evening watching the daytime landscape fade away btwn the beautiful backyard birch trees was PRICELESS! It was a great home base for all our Black Hills travels. A little farther than I'd like from Mt Rushmore but the towns near there are a crowded ZOO! This was a nice respite away from it all and definitely had the scenic drives that others may miss if you don't travel north thru the Hills. Only downside was the access to the house from the ROAD- surprise! no driveway. Was hard to see at night- recommend arriving in daylight. NO AIR CONDITIONING but really didn't need it. Nights were cool. Ceiling fans helpful. Since I'm not a camper, I'd recommend this place for families wanting a little more room and perfect accommodations!
We absolutely loved this cabin! It had everything that we could ever imagine needing. It was perfect for our trip to the Black Hills! Although it was on the northern edge of many Black Hills sights, we didn't mind the driving because it was just so scenic no matter what route we took. We would recommend this cabin for families with any age children. We had three teenagers with us and they kept occupied when we were at the cabin. The cabin had a air hockey table, foosball table, ping pong table and a hot tub! We had a question about the hot tub and the manager texted us right back! The only things that I feel needs to be changed are the steps leading down to the cabin and the steps into the cabin. I think a safer stairway should be considered. One missed step would be very painful and it really prohibits anyone with mobility problems from renting the cabin. I would still recommend the cabin, but not for the elderly or people that would have trouble with the path leading to the cabin and the huge step into the cabin.
