Overview

Photos and Description of this Bozeman holiday cottage

Large open plan space with high ceilings, reclaimed beams, loads of character

We think that you will truly enjoy the unique style of Yellow Dog Cottage, nestled in a lush historic South-side neighborhood, lovingly renovated and decorated with contemporary Knoll furniture pieces paired with antiques and rustic accents. Less expensive than most standard hotel rooms with all the amenities, beautiful linens, loads of space, kitchen and beautiful dining area, lots of extras. Our 110-year-old farmhouse-style home is on the other side of this property providing privacy, but making it convenient to get anything extra you might need.

Why not pay less than you might for most standard hotel rooms and enjoy loads of space, high standard furnishings, and extras like fresh coffee beans, tea, and milk.

A Danish wood-burning stove makes the cottage even cozier, and the vaulted ceilings provide a wonderful feeling of openness. One space flows into the next, making this a relaxing get-away spot. The cottage sleeps three very comfortably. Cot available upon request for a 4th person for additional $20/night.

We are in walking distance to historic downtown Bozeman, Montana State University, and the Museum of the Rockies (each 10 mins.). There are stunning walking trails nearby, along with parks, restaurants of all sorts, and ice cream and sandwich shops.

It's always beautiful in Bozeman - rain (we have the most amazing rainbows), shine (there’s a lot of it), or snow (the better to ski in) - there is something for everyone. Whether you like to hike, wander, fish, ski, hunt, or shop and dine out, our cowboy country offers everything from wine bars and whisky distilleries to quaint coffee shops, local bison to vegetarian cuisine, boutiques and high-end fashion, the most amazing rivers in which to fish, float, and tube, world class skiing, hot springs - no matter what you like the local charm abounds.

Yellowstone National Park and the Big Sky ski resort are a short 55 minutes away. Bridger Bowl - America's awesome best-kept secret ski area - is only 18 minutes away. We have a film festival, food festival, the Sweet Pea festival, art walks, "Music on Main" each week in the summer, and so much more…

About Sharon Figi

My husband and I live in the main house with our two yellow (lab) dogs, Rebel & Rumo. Our oldest son attends medical school in London and our younger son is finishing up high school in England and will attend Annapolis, the U S Naval Acadamy next fall. Our family moved temporarily from Bozeman to Lugano, Switzerland 10 years ago for work and then to England. We rented out our home during that time. In 2014 my husband and I returned to our beloved Bozeman and are now enjoying being back from our great adventure. We spend a great deal of time skiing, fishing, floating the rivers, hiking with our dogs, playing tennis, and cooking with our boys when they are home.

Sharon Figi purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Sharon Figi chose Montana

Yellow Dogs Cottage is distinctly unique in its mix of high end furnishings, artistic details, combined with cozy beds and sofa, quality linens, and Danish wood burning stove which all make for a stylish yet relaxing setting. If you are interested in the aesthetics of a special home this is the place for you. We are also located in what we think is the most beautiful historic neighborhood in all of Bozeman. We have won a historic award for the restoration of our 100+ year old home.

What makes this cottage unique

Walking distance to town, MSU, Bobcat Stadium, shops, restaurants, ice cream, deli, Museum of the Rockies, walking trails, outdoor public tennis courts 1/2 block away, indoor public tennis courts at MSU just minutes away. Short drive from Bridger Bowl and Bohart Ski areas, 50 mins from Big Sky, Moonlight Basin, Spanish Peaks, & Yellowstone Club.

TOTAL GEM in downtown Boze!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Yellow Dog Cottage last week during a one week vacation in Bozeman - and this cottage was simply DELIGHTFUL! Our host Hans (Sharon was away) was beyond kind and welcomed us into his backyard cottage retreat. The cottage is deceivingly large and the once coach house has been wonderfully converted and designed into a warm and cozy hideaway. I only have GREAT things to report: very clean, great decor, amazing location (10 min walk to Main St.), parking space, very bright (there are skylights which light the place rain or shine!), great wood burning stove (great for winters), full TV and cable (if you need it), TONS of board games, all kitchen and bathroom amenities and as the namesake goes - 2 lovely yellow labs inhabit the main house which I sadly only learned on my last day. I would 100% recommend the cottage if you're visiting Boze and looking for a unique place to stay while you're exploring the town - or skiing nearby. Thanks so much Sharon and Hans!

Very Cozy.

  • 4 of 5

We loved the cottage for it had plenty of space, comfortable bed and furnishings, walking distance to town/and great restaurants and a short distance to some hiking. The only thing that we really feel would give it five stars would be a window at eye level in the main area.

Owners provided great customer service.

TERRIBLE! If we could give a ZERO star rating, WE WOULD!

  • 1 of 5

This was an overall miserable experience, felt uncomfortable/unwelcome. We felt misled by the photos & description. Would have rather stayed in the hotel we had. This is a converted garage in someone's backyard. We thought it had a private entrance, but it doesn't. You pull down a narrow back alley where the trash is collected, park in a tight spot & enter this garage through the owner's back yard. This garage has a make-shift kitchenette that is connected to the bathroom. There is no enclosed ceiling in the bathroom & no door. The shower is tiny & did not work on the 4th day, which was when we decided to just go home early. Even my 5 yr old was upset w/no privacy. We killed 2-4 spiders/bugs per day & all had bug bites. Disgusting!! No windows for ventilation except a small one in the ceiling, very hot & stuffy. Old, gross, overused love seat that I didn't let my kids sit on. We arrived with our 3 kids & we were immediately pre-judged and discriminated against by this property owner. She stated that we only had a res for 2 adults. We booked our property for 2 adults & 3 children. The property was advertised for 4 adults, so we thought it would be fine because our youngest is 2 and we had her little cot. I don't know why the reservation was inaccurate but we paid the price with the owner. She brought in a cot and told me that we had to pay a cot rental fee in lieu of additional charges for over 3 people. We requested to opt out of the cot rental and just use the queen & twin bed along with our cot. She refused and then continued to argue with me about the # of people in our res. It was not our fault that there was a glitch in the reservation. After one night, we discussed her additional charges with her and she became upset on the phone telling me that we need to get out by the time she got home or she was calling the police, but refused to refund us for the 4 remaining nights. She then gave her son the phone and he told us we could stay as long as we paid additional fees. When we left we took photos to prove we didn't "damage" anything bc we did not trust her. Icing on the cake: she kept part of our security deposit for the cot rental even though we only stayed 4 nights & pd for 5. So basically she got paid for an entire night that we weren't there for free and still deducted from the deposit. In over 8 yrs using HomeAway, never a bad experience until now. SO DISAPPOINTED and saddened by the experience!

Owner's Response: 2 1/2 years ago we decided to share our beautiful Yellow Dogs Cottage with guests outside of our family. Sharing it on HomeAway, etc. became a way to help finance our sons’ educations - one just starting at the Naval Academy (Go Navy!), the other in medical school, a great motivator for keeping our lovely cottage filled with happy guests! We go out of our way to provide a topnotch experience for each guest. I prep the cottage myself so nothing is left to chance. Linens are professionally laundered & pressed, beds w/ fluffy pillows and down comforters, everything clean & sanitized, white bathrobes await in the armoire, high-end Knoll furniture mixed w/ antiques, down-filled sofa, Danish wood stove, off-street parking; it's a stand-alone structure on the back of our property with its own entrance. I leave treats, flowers, and gifts for our guests, along with fresh coffee beans, tea, and milk. Our last guests were celebrating their 30tg anniversary- we left a bottle of pink bubbly in a wine bucket, 6 local brewers in the fridge for a beer lover. Guests join us for barbeques or a friendly cocktail in our backyard. This leads me to a very sad place where I feel one bad apple can spoil everything. My heart hurts from having to substantiate our hard work and love for what we do. Each time we say “yes” to a reservation is a leap of faith. Until now our guests have been thoughtful, kind, & interesting. On the day the family was to arrive they requested early check in, I rushed to prepare the cottage for “2 adults • 0 children” (copied from their reservation). To help I informed them they could check in early, though they ended up arriving that evening. We showed them the off-street parking next to the cottage - a nice benefit. We then realized that they arrived w/ 5 people & in good spirits I explained that we only have beds for 4 (we don't take reservations for 5) but we would make it work. I called Homeaway to get advise, they said to charge our standard cot fee so we let the wife know. On day 2 they called angry and verbally abusive. The wife threatened to write a terrible review if we charged the standard cot fee and this is what you see. Their review is filled with misrepresentations and lies. If you have any doubts about the quality of our cottage, listing accuracy, or helpfulness of our family, please read our reviews on HomeAway/VRBO, or search Yellow Dogs Cottage Bozeman.

Great Stay in Bozeman!

  • 5 of 5

We spent four nights in the Yellow Dog Cottage in September. It is a unique property; a restored carriage house that has been artistically done. It’s a great restoration but with modern conveniences where everything works. The beautiful eclectic furnishings from antiques to modern show the great eye for decorating that Sharon and Hans have. The high ceilings, skylights, and clerestory windows give a light and bright feeling to the cottage. The location is excellent, in the beautiful historic Bon Ton district of Bozeman. It’s a short ten minute walk to town for lunch or dinner at one of the excellent restaurants. (Try Rice for Thai food or the taco truck in an Airstream trailer for a quick lunch.) Walking around this district to see the different architectural styles and restored homes is a fun activity, too. The Museum of the Rockies is definitely worth a visit and is a short ride from the cottage. Sharon and Hans are great hosts as well. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it.
