About Nathan Dehnke

I am medically retired United States Airborne Infantryman working as a civilian for the Army in Stuttgart, Germany. My passions include being an amateur photographer as well as builder of simple furniture pieces out of re-purposed pallets (some of which can be found in the cabin). I have also recently taken up acting here in Germany at a community theater. I bought this cabin thinking it would be my "getaway" from the hustle and bustle of D.C., but I have been transferred to Germany so now I am happy to share My Lost River Oasis with you - I hope you take as much pleasure from it as I do!

Nathan Dehnke purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Nathan Dehnke chose Lost City

I looked at properties from the Shenandoah Valley to Mathis in West Virginia, but this beautiful cabin kept pulling me back. Every time I get off Interstate 81 and start heading West to this oasis, I already start to feel rejuvenated just knowing what awaits me at the end of my short trip. No other cabin or property was able to capture my heart and soul the way this cabin on Timberline Drive did, so how could I not fall in love?

What makes this cabin unique

On my first visit to this cabin with my real estate agent, I was immediately struck by how beautifully she stood above the quiet road. And when I walked in, her gorgeous wood floors gleamed as I walked around and then stepped outside to see a wonderful view of the morning sunrise peeking through the tall, majestic trees found all over this property. The beauty, serenity, and possibilities hidden within this little cabin were what I could not find anywhere else and which make this a unique vacation spot for anyone.

Great weekend stay

  • 5 of 5

Had a great time with the family. Slept four people comfortably. The cabin was well appointed, clean, and comfortable. We enjoyed the patio (charcoal grill) and the fire pit outside. Much like the other reviews said, the cabin is deep in the woods - get there before dark!!! Plan on no cell reception though internet works fine. Nathan approved my dog for staying, which was wonderful. There were several dog friendly breweries and wineries along the way to make the drive back and forth fun as well.

A Quiet Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Love this spot in the George Washington National Forest! Trout Pond close by with a beach and a lake; Lost River State Park close by for hiking and other activities. Great little restaurant - Lost River Grill - a meat market, farmer's market on Saturdays. The cabin is a perfect place to relax and unwind.

Peacefulness & Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

This Lost River property (ID # 3938561) is a comfortable and well-maintained "cabin in the woods". The layout provides a fully-equipped kitchen area (pots, pans, plates, cups, utensils, etc.) and a very spacious family room, that has comfortable furniture and an entertainment center (flat screen/streaming video providers/ DVD/internet). The screened-in porch feels secluded, relaxing, and peaceful. There was always a breeze. The beds and linens are fresh and very comfortable. The house is clean and feels new. There was absolutely no sign of mice. Internet was reliable, although maybe a bit slower than usual. Trout Pond swimming & recreation area is less than a 10 minute drive.

The cabin is located in a remote area so be certain to bring everything you need. The nearest point of civilization, including food, water, ice, and fuel, is a 20-25 minute drive, albeit a beautiful one. (Yes, the house does have water and a refrigerator/freezer/ice trays. I always drink bottled water, and I needed enormous amounts of ice for picnic coolers during day trips.) Also, you will want one or more room-size fans, as there is no air conditioning. (The cabin was completely comfortable with fans.) Three additional considerations: (a) At the time we were there (July 2017), there was no clothes washer or drier; (b) There is no cellphone service anywhere near this location (even GPS service was sporadic); and (c) Do not underestimate the driveway: It is very long and very steep, and has a fairly tight U-turn, 3/4ths the way up it. (This is not evident on GoogleMaps.) I am guessing that if it was raining, you would not be able drive all the way up this drive with only 2WD, and that even dry, it would still be extremely difficult to do so. (You might be able to make it to the U-Turn, and then walk the rest.) With 4WD, it was simply not a problem, even at night in pouring rainstorms.

If you are looking for a clean, comfortable, well-appointed and well-kept remote cabin, deep in the woods, it is unlikely that you could do better than this property. We had an extremely enjoyable stay, and will definitely rent there again.

Charming little getaway

  • 5 of 5

This place was perfect for our group of 4 (2 couples)! It was a great getaway from the city, and had everything we needed for a great long weeekend. The driveway is definitely quite steep, but that wasn't a problem for us. The one thing I would note it that you probably won't have cell phone service within a 20 minute drive of the place, so plan ahead and save directions and anything you might need beforehand. There is a lovely park nearby where we did a little hiking (Trout Pond recreation area), which was a 10 or 15 minute drive away. Also a little town nearby where we could pick up the odds and ends we needed during our stay. The screened in porch was great for reading and listening to the rain without getting soaked. Overall, great place and highly recommend it!

A Relaxing Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My family recently enjoyed a relaxing weekend at Nathan's Cabin. The setting was peaceful and secluded. The cabin was well equipped and comfortable in every way - just what we were looking for. The owner was extremely responsive to my questions. Absolutely no complaints. A great VRBO experience all around.

As the owner and other reviewers mentioned, the driveway to the cabin is very steep. We didn't make it all the way up to the cabin the night we arrived but had no problems the following day. Also, we had no cell service within 20+ minutes of the cabin so make sure you have good directions before you go and aren't relying on your cell service. The WIFI in the cabin worked great though.
