Pure adventure, rugged, unique, and off-the-beaten-path - there's no place like Providencia.
Once in Providencia, Monasterio del Viento (Monastery of Wind) adds to the magic and mystery of the island. Wake up to a glorious pink sunrise, step out onto the balcony perched just above the calm turquoise waters while the kitchen staff prepares morning breakfast with tropical juices, Colombian coffee, fresh cut papaya, organic eggs and delicious local arepas. How about a young sweet coconut to finish?
El Monasterio del Viento sits on the small volcanic island of Old Providence and Santa Catalina; hidden away in the most remote corner of the Caribbean.
Inhabited by warm, loving and caring people, Providencia is a place where nature and all her gifts are valued and protected. An environment of peace and tranquility, harmonious and unified, not fragmented nor exploited.
Located on Maracaibo Bay, El Monasterio is perched above a sea of seven shades of turquoise looking out towards Crab Key, directly within the borders of the National Park McBean Lagoon. This is part of the expansive UNESCO designated marine territory called the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve.
The house itself has been lovingly restored with charming artistic details throughout. It represents the best of Caribbean style living. It's rustique, comfortable and casual, with spectacular views of the water in every direction. A soft year round breeze can be felt throughout the house.
The covered deck on the water (palapa) is ideal for early morning meditation and Yoga. Take a nap after lunch on one of the double lounge chairs or hammocks strung up around the house.
Inside the main house, there are two large open and airy bedrooms, each containing a full ensuite bathroom. Both look out over the turquoise water below. One has a fantastic large shaded veranda, complete with hammocks, chair, and table. It's the best place to unwind, any time of the day. The other section of the property has a large two level loft area, ideal for families with children staying at the house. The lower has a queen and a single bed and a full bathroom. The upper level has another queen and single bed in a spacious area.

To fully enjoy Monasterio, you will be pampered by our staff which includes a wonderful local cook, and a chef (not available year-round). They team up to combine the local Caribbean flavors of Providencia with high international cuisine. Add to that your private concierge and travel photographer (photography is optional, not available year round and the cost is not included in the quote). Last, we have housecleaning so that all your time is spent with your family and enjoying the island.
Snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming in the gentle warm waters are literally right in front of you. Paddle over to Crab Key!! Just step into the water in front of the house if you feel like going for a swim. If you're the type of person who prefers to laze around on an idyllic white sandy beach all day, then you're in for a treat. There are numerous long stretches of shaded beaches, two of which come with the most friendly little beach bars. One is owned by Richard Hawkins..aka. Mr. Richards' on Southwest Bay. The other is Roland's Roots Bar on Manzanillo Beach.
With the world's 3rd longest continuous barrier reef, immense underwater biodiversity, warm tropical waters and excellent underwater visibility, Old Providence is Colombia's top diving destination. Once again all of the surrounding seas and reef areas have been designated as a marine protected area by UNESCO. There are several excellent dive operations on the Island.
Our chef with his assistant Gigiola is ready to prepare and share with you many of the island recipes. Enjoy locally caught fresh fish, crab, conch, and lobster. The property is perfectly suited for honeymooners, families, weddings, groups or as a 'retreat destination'. Also consider it, if you're in need of a complete 'DIGITAL DETOX'. The house is best appreciated when you can unplug and unwind.
It's absolutely an ideal house to base a Kite-surfing getaway. In its infancy on the island Kite surfing holds tremendous potential, especially the area right in front of the house which enjoys consistent offshore winds and the water inside the reef break is relatively calm.
If you're interested in seeing a really beautiful video that gives the feel of the island and its' culture, please search 'VIMEO Scott Sporleder' or 'VIMEO Juan Felipe Cortes'. Sorry but this site does not allow for hyperlinks. Scott's video is titled 'Isla Providencia', and Juan's is titled 'Roots'.
Local Culture: The Raizal families of Old Providence are truly blessed. It is a community of people that are so warm, generous and respectful. If you get a chance to go to the island, please take time to experience fully in their way of living, their calm balanced and peaceful outlook. Find the opportunity to sit down with a local family to immerse yourself in an old story about the colorful history of the island. Perhaps a visit to a beautiful garden in the mountains tended to by a well-known farmer, or befriend a gifted artist or talented chef. Calypso music is a rich part of the Raizal heritage and something unique to this part of the Caribbean. Seek out local legend named Willy T. and his fellow group of musicians. Lastly, please make sure you set aside time for the horse races that take place on Saturdays, directly on the beach at Southwest Bay.
Get to know the locals and make every effort you can to DIRECTLY support them in a sustainable and equitable way.
Happy to help with any questions that you might have regarding the island, things to do and how to travel to this unique, authentic Caribbean destination.
