Pure adventure, rugged, unique, and off-the-beaten path - there's no place like Providencia.

Once in Providencia, Monasterio del Viento (Monastery of Wind) adds to the magic and mystery of the island. Wake up to a glorious pink sunrise, step out onto the balcony perched just above the calm turquoise waters while the kitchen staff prepares morning breakfast with tropical juices, Colombian coffee, fresh cut papaya, organic eggs and delicious local arepas. How about a young sweet coconut to finish?

El Monasterio del Viento sits on the small volcanic island of Old Providence and Santa Catalina; hidden away in the most remote corner of the Caribbean.

Inhabited by warm, loving and caring people, Providencia is a place where nature and all her gifts are valued and protected. An environment of peace and tranquility, harmonious and unified, not fragmented nor exploited.

Located on Maracaibo Bay, El Monasterio is perched above a sea of seven shades of turquoise looking out towards Crab Key, directly within the borders of the National Park McBean Lagoon. This is part of the expansive UNESCO designated marine territory called the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve.

The house itself has been lovingly restored with charming artistic details throughout. It represents the best of Caribbean style living. It's rustique, comfortable and casual, with spectacular views of the water in every direction. A soft year round breeze can be felt throughout the house.

The covered deck on the water (palapa) is ideal for early morning meditation and Yoga. Take a nap after lunch on one of the double lounge chairs or hammocks strung up around house.

Inside the main house there are two large open and airy bedrooms, each containing a full ensuite bathroom. Both look out over the turquoise water below. One has a fantastic large shaded veranda, complete with hammocks, chair and table. It's the best place to unwind, anytime of the day. The other section of the property has a large two level loft area, ideal for families with children staying at the house. The lower has a queen and a single bed and a full bathroom. The upper level has another queen and single bed in a spacious area.

To fully enjoy Monasterio, you will be pampered by our staff which includes a wonderful local cook, and a chef (not available year round). They team up to combine the local caribbean flavors of Providencia with high international cuisine. Add to that your private concierge and travel photographer (photography is optional, not available year round and the cost is not included in the quote). Last, we have housecleaning so that all your time is spent with your family and enjoying the island.

ACTIVITIES:

Snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming in the gentle warm waters are literally right in front of you. Paddle over to Crab Key!! Just step into the water in front of the house if you feel like going for a swim. If you're the type of person who prefers to laze around on an idyllic white sandy beach all day, then you're in for a treat. There are numerous long stretches of shaded beaches, two of which come with the most friendly little beach bars. One is owned by Richard Hawkins..aka.'.Mr Richards' on Southwest Bay. The other is Roland's Roots Bar on Manzanillo Beach.

With the world's 3rd longest continuous barrier reef, immense underwater biodiversity, warm tropical waters and excellent underwater visibility, Old Providence is Colombia's top diving destination. Once again all of the surrounding seas and reef areas have been designated as a marine protected area by UNESCO. There are several excellent dive operations on the Island.

Our chef with his assistant Gigiola is ready to prepare and share with you many of the island recipes. Enjoy locally caught fresh fish, crab, conch and lobster. If you are a vegetarian or prefer something different NO problem...there are plenty of unique island grown vegetables and fruits to savor. We can accommodate most dietary requests

Other activities include...

- Trail Hiking to the peak ( an easy 2 hour hike )

- Guided horseback riding in the hills or beaches.

- Guided Artisanal fishing.

- Fantastic scuba diving.

- Kayaking facilities next door

Full Board Dining experience- In order to offer a five star dining experience in a remote location, we offer full board. Price is US $65.00/day per person. Children under 10 pay $45.00/day per person. Food charges are to be paid locally upon arrival. Of course we understand you might want to explore a meal elsewhere and we can offer 1/2 board for $50.00/day/person, $35.00 for children under 10.

PLEASE NOTE--- The housekeeping is included in the rates.

The property is perfectly suited for honeymooners, families, weddings, groups or as a 'retreat destination'. Also consider it, if you're in need of a complete 'DIGITAL DETOX'. The house is best appreciated when you can unplug and unwind.

It's absolutely an ideal house to base a Kite-surfing getaway. In it's infancy on the island Kite surfing holds tremendous potential, especially the area right in front of the house which enjoys consistent offshore winds and the water inside the reef break is relatively calm.

If you're interested in seeing a really beautiful video that gives the feel of the island and its' culture please search 'VIMEO Scott Sporleder' or 'VIMEO Juan Felipe Cortes'. Sorry but this site does not allow for hyperlinks. Scott's video is titled 'Isla Providencia' and Juan's is titled 'Roots'.

Local Culture: The Raizal families of Old Providence are truly blessed. It is a community of people that are so warm, generous and respectful. If you get a chance to go to the island, please take time to experience fully in their way of living, their calm balanced and peaceful outlook. Find the opportunity to sit down with a local family to immerse yourself in an old story about the colorful history of the island. Perhaps a visit to a beautiful garden in the mountains tended to by a well known farmer, or befriend a gifted artist or talented chef. Calypso music is a rich part of the Raizal heritage and something unique to this part of the Caribbean. Seek out local legend named Willy T. and his fellow group of musicians. Lastly, please make sure you set aside time for the horse races that take place on Saturdays, directly on the beach at Southwest Bay.

Get to know the locals and make every effort you can to DIRECTLY support them in a sustainable and equitable way.

Happy to help with any questions that you might have regarding the island, things to do and how to travel to this unique, authentic Caribbean destination.

PLEASE NOTE:

With our concern for your children's safety, we have a reservation policy as follows....

Unfortunately we cannot accept young children below 5 years of age, unless there is an adult who can take full responsibility and care for the little ones while at the house. We hope you can appreciate that both the owner and staff are committed and concerned about each and everyone's happiness and wellbeing. If you need to have a nanny to help out, please let us know and we can arrange one for you. Additionally we have limited internet service at the house, though is available if you must, at the Deep Blue restaurant just steps away from the house.

A few OTHER things to keep in mind,

You are welcome to plug your mp3 player or phone into the stereo to listen to music around the house. Again please note we do not have internet, so music has to be in your files.

Our personalized concierge service can help you reserve, scooters, atv's ( They look like big fast golf carts ) or even a small car. You can navigate the entire island in under an hour...It's small!

Once you reserve Monasterio, we will e-mail you a very detailed Guest Guide attachment about Providencia and Monasterio del Viento

Excellent place to stay and enjoy Providence Island in Colombia. Very well located next to Cayo Cangrejo, comfortable rooms with astonoshing dock over the sea. Service was flawless and delicous food by profesional chef.

Recomended: Diving, Rolands Beach and private boat tour of the island.

A Gem in Magical Providence Island.

  • 5 of 5

El Monasterio del Viento is a gem in magical Providence island.

We stayed for a week and felt as if we were right at home. The place was clean, the service was amazing and the food was delicious, they even catered to our vegetarian diet.

It's a great location right on the water and with easy access to the rest of the island, the house provides an exceptional ocean view from the pool with a private big deck and area to rest and hang out. Being secluded is always a highlight for us, we prefer a private space to relax away from the hustle and bustle (not that there's much of it on the island anyway) and going out when we want to mingle.

The house is tidy and full of beautiful details and the beds are super comfy (another highlight for us).

Cristina hosted us like we were family and Rodrigo is a Chef who cooks the most delicious food, from seafood to vegetarian meals, this house is all in with the food and service.

It was perfect for the two of us, but I can totally see myself there in a family trip including babies and kids.

Everything about this place is amazing and the surrounding area is beautiful beaches and virgin forest.

We would definitely recommend El Monasterio to anyone visiting Providence island.

The place to be

  • 5 of 5

Monasterio del Viento is the place you want to be when in Old Providence. It's the perfect mix between the island's esence and the comfort you look for when on vacation. Located in one of the most beautiful corners of the island, you wake up to the best possible view, Cayo Cangrejo escorted by the seven color sea. Within no more than 20 steps you reach a lovely deck over the water, always freshly windy, which makes probably one of the best spots in the world to have your morning coffee. Aside from the view and the location, this place offers a unique and delicious gastronomic experience that you won't encounter anywhere else on the island. If you are thinking of Old Providence, this is the place to be.

A brilliant taste of heaven!

  • 5 of 5

My stay at "The Wind Monastery" was nothing short of being perfect. I had little expectations of the trip other than finding a peaceful caribbean getaway in order to disconnect from the burdens of daily routine and, hopefully, reconnect with myself or be at peace. To my surprise, the guesthouse was beyond anything I could have foreseen for such a remote place; it was clean and cozy with an elegant touch of a bohemian vibe that was most soothing for the eyesight. The place, on itself, did the trick for what I was looking for.

All seemed perfect at plain sight, but the greatest value that I got out of the experience came in the form of my hosts, Master Chef Rodrigo and his partner Cristina. They went beyond proper customer service and extended a graceful touch of friendship that made me feel as if I were amongst family. Needless to say, the food was exquisite! Taking the previous into account I would have done nothing other than eat, lay in the deck and enjoy some drinks in this caribbean paradise but Rodrigo and Cristina invited me to go snorkeling, hiking, and even suggested a couple of sites around the island that brought an unexpected rush of joy to my adventure.

Words cannot accurately describe what my senses felt so strongly. I have travelled far and wide and this place had earned it's spot amongst my top destinations; I highly recommend it!

Most dreamlike experience in my life!

  • 5 of 5

It was a paradise that came true. It´s the warmth of the decoration seen in the details, combined with the exquisite chef cousine, the dreamlike view and activities, and most importantly the dedication and attention received by the owners/workers. Its a home, its a dream, its the best vacation I have had by far. I haven´t seen a project as complete and dedicated in my years of worldwide travel.

Un lugar de ensueño

  • 5 of 5

Due to its extremely remote location certain things that we are all accustomed to cannot be provided. Some things like on demand hot water for showers are not practical due to the local price of energy. Energy generation happens locally through burning of diesel fuel, something we do not like to support and is very costly. Our water is solar heated! Again we are accustomed to having internet on demand. This is a problem on the island. The current technology is unreliable. Hence we cannot guarantee that you will have service on the Island. Lastly the pool at the house is operational, though it is not a whirlpool nor Jacuzzi. It also acts up on us once in a while.
