The owners Willem & Welmoet Winters
Owner willem winters purchased this chateau / country house in 2010
Words cannot really express how much we enjoyed our holiday at the Commanderie. This is a one of a kind property whose majestic views of the surrounding valley are only surpassed by the graciousness of its owners, Willem and Welmoet Winters. While my review will detail the physical property, our greatest memories will be the kindness that our hosts showed for our family, going above and beyond typical property maintenance requests. They live close to the house and took care of so many extras, including buying a birthday cake for our ten year old daughter when we could not explain to the bakery what we were looking for. They were the best hosts a Homeaway traveler could hope for.
We rented the home for three weeks in June 2016 to coincide with the Euro football tournament, using it as a base for regional exploration. We took our four daughters with us and had various friends and family visit us during our stay. The house comfortably sleeps 14, when including the separate guest house (which is physically connected) and we had plenty of space. Though the sun did not always shine, we used the pool quite a bit, especially our kids and the water was warm throughout. Willem took good care of the pool and the landscaping around the home so our kids could play football, badminton and play on the trampoline. The kitchen was well equipped with all modern appliances (actually both kitchens were) and we enjoyed cooking many family meals into the late hours. On days where we did not want to cook, the trip into Bolougne sur Gesse was less than five minutes by car, where there were several little bistros and pizza parlor that was very friendly to our family despite our poor french skills. The town market on Wednesdays has been in the same place for 700 years and was a can't miss experience. However there are two well stocked supermarkets in town so shopping was not a problem. The Winters even took us shopping the first day so we would have food when everything was closed on Sunday.
We explored the surrounding villages and mountain areas about an hour away. The Toulouse airport (and the stadium for our matches) was reachable in under an hour as well, though when you were sitting on the back verranda, the city seemed a thousand miles away. All in all it was a perfect vacation and my children (and my parents) will have fond memories of our time in the French countryside.
The home was beautiful in a peaceful, gorgeous setting. The history of the building was interesting and the owners did a great job of modernizing and yet preserving some of the original building. We had a large group and it suited us very comfortably. Unfortunately, it was too cool to use the pool but we utilized the bikes, and other outdoor activites. The owners were very attentive and gracious. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting them and visiting their nearby home. We had a little trouble finding the location, so be sure to write down the address for your GPS.
Thank you Wilhelm and Wihlomet!
This is simply a fabulous place to come and stay. The photographs on the web site are true to form. They tell the story.
We had a family wedding to attend near Auch, so we decided to extend this into a week's holiday for ourselves and extended family.
From the moment we arrived, we found the spacious living accommodation, bedrooms, kitchens and even gardens to be clean, well maintained and welcoming. There is a large table out on the terrace (under cover) with plenty of comfortable chairs so the guests can choose to dine either inside or out. We are time share owners, and spend a lot of time in different places around the world. If you have heard of RCI timeshare, I would have rated this as better than their Gold Crown standard. Well I can say without hesitation that Willem & Welmoet Winters have a gem of a place here. Willem was there to meet us when we arrived and showed us around, but didn't dwell, knowing we were tired after a long journey. When we needed a replacement kettle, he was there in minutes with one. They are attentive without getting in your hair.
While we were there, the sun shone and the pool warmed up quickly from the solar heater. Everyone used the pool, which is long enough to try and swim "lengths". The water was very clean.
The bathrooms, mostly ensuite, were very clean and the showers were far better than the standard 4* hotel ones we have in the UK. Most importantly though the beds were really comfortable. Often when away from home this isn't the case.
There were good washing, drying and ironing facilities, as well as the usual kitchen facilities you would expect such as fridge freezer, dish washer, range cooker etc. There was an excellent sound and TV systems.
If you are an art enthusiast, the buildings were filled with many very good paintings which Willem had done himself. If you are interested in old buildings, Willem will show you parts where the walls were hacked out of solid rock, when the original monastery was built all those centuries ago.
In summary, we hope to come back and stay again, for no other reason than it ticked all the boxes for us.
The photos of this place look amazing and it is better in real life.
We stayed for a long weekend with four couples (you could have more) and a one year old baby and we basically never left the property it was so nice. The house is extremely spacious, each couple had their own 'wing' with bathroom, the beds were excellent. The living areas are huge inside and out so it never felt crowded. Outside there are five different areas to relax in, the pool area, two separate paved areas, outdoor dining table (under cover) and a games area with ping pong and a pool table. Inside an enourmous lounge room, a huge table that sits 13, a fire it was so relaxing. It is so close to Toulouse and you have a gorgeous drive through the country side. Bakeries and shops are nearby. Willem is very friendly and does everything he can to help you enjoy your stay and is a pleasure to deal with. The house was really clean and all the ammenities worked. Everyone we went with said how amazing the house was and that it made the holiday. You will no be disappointed staying here!
Without doubt the very best holiday home in the pyrenee's that we have stayed in- and we have stayed in many.
This Exclusive, comfortable, private, spacious, sunny, sprawling and ultimately peaceful retreat with breath taking views of the mountains and countryside hills- is the ultimate in beauty, taste and relaxation.
Perfectly located for exploring many National heritage Estates,Ancient ruins and castles, Lourdes, Toulouse, Auch,Boulonge Sur Gesse, The Gers, Haute Garronne, Spanish villages, Pyrenee mountains and magnificent golfing and sport facilities. You cant ask for better owners who respect privacy but give lots of help / suggestions when needed.
Two American families (a total of 11 people, 4 adults and 7 kids) stayed in this luxurious monastery for a week in June 2012. It was absolutely lovely with a great layout, plenty of space for children to play and gracious host and hostess. We cooked almost every meal here which saved us a lot of money and only took one short day trip to Auch because no one wanted to leave the property. We could wash clothes easily, visit grocery and town for market and walk the fields and lanes which were just beginning to bloom with sunflowers. So many beautiful flowers grace this property and the view from the pool is amazing. Willem came almost daily to check on us and responded to any needs we had. Welmoet rode her Spanish horse to the farm which delighted the children. Truly a once in a lifetime vacation rental.
