About Amy

We're the Underwood's. David, Amy, Jean and Lynn. We live in Tidewater, Virginia and have been vacationing in the Outer Banks since 1966 - it's one of our favorite places on earth!

Amy purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Amy chose Outer Banks

The South Nags Head area has always been a favorite. The laid-back atmosphere laced with history and boasting a couple of iconic piers make it a wonderful location. And of course - you can't beat the easy access to the beach!

What makes this cottage unique

Stay in a cottage with the charms of Old Nags Head. Great proximity to the beach, local attractions, fantastic caretakers - Mike and Lisa!

Guestbook comments from the owner

This was lovely little cottage, perfect for a couple or a small family. The location was perfect and had easy access to the beach and restaurants. It was very well maintained with all the amenities of home.

Very cozy, comfortable and well equipped small cottage.

  • 4 of 5

Check in/out was a breeze. Great location across from beach and very near recommendable restaurants. Sitting areas outside were enjoyable - nice touch with the patio lights! Wi-fi and TV were great compliments to the cottage and came in very handy for evening entertainment and researching area venues and attractions. Would suggest upgrading from basic cable to offer more for the evenings, especially in the colder seasons.

Only notable shortcomings were the noises emanating from refrigerator and heater unit mounted above the bed, but they weren't really too distracting or bothersome. The king bed was very comfortable after long active days and delicious local meals and libations!

All-in a great value for getting away!!

Sweet cottage

  • 5 of 5

Comfortable and compact but plenty big enough for two. It had everything we needed and, best of all, was pet friendly, Owners could not have been nicer.

Wonderful Cottage!

  • 4 of 5

Our first visit to OBX was wonderful, particularly because Amy's cottage worked out perfectly for my wife, me and our two pups... very cute and comfortable accommodations... short walk to the beach... easily accessible to all that the barrier islands have to offer. New A/C unit worked beautifully ... only watchout... burrs in the grasses in the adjoining lot when the pups were outside. Thanks again.

Generally ok

  • 3 of 5

The cottage was cute and big enough for two adults and one child. It was clean and in a really good location for beach and sound access. The air conditioner was very loud and vibrated the wall that the bed is against which made it difficult to sleep. That made the stay a lot less relaxing than I would have liked. The cottage also did not come with a kitchen sponge or more than half a role of toilet paper. These small items would have made a big difference to our satisfaction. No one likes to go to the store for basic necessities while on vacation.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking time to review Kemp & Olive Cottage. We value your feedback. We do have excellent caretakers that take pride in the cleanliness of the cottage and of course, the location is wonderful! I am sorry the AC wall unit disturbed you. We replaced the unit the following week with a new super-quiet split system. Your feedback was very helpful, thank you! We are happy to provide the starter roll of toilet tissue and paper towels upon arrival. As always, our caretakers, Mike and Lisa and I are committed to an excellent experience during your stay. We're just a phone call away!

Charming Kemp and Olive Cottage

  • 4 of 5

This was a perfect little spot for our family get away. The place was cozy, inviting, and very charming. The cottage was very close to the beach and the walking distance was wonderful for our children. Our hosts checked in mid stay and were very friendly. The best perk of the place was having a full kitchen so I could prepare healthy meals in minimal time. It was so refreshing to have many things within walking distance and to enjoy activities within a short drive. I highly recommend visiting the cottage on South Va. Dare Trail Drive. This definitely is a hidden little gem, that offers relaxation and rejuvenation.

Relaxing

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the Kemp & Olive cottage this past week. We particularly liked sitting on the front porch early in the morning enjoying our tea & doing devotionals. Across the street was a bike path & we took full advantage each morning taking bike rides. The cottage was clean & nicely decorated. Bed was comfy & I loved the subway tile in bathroom. Right across the street within a few feet was an entrance to the beach which was convenient. The cottage is located close to many amenities. The only suggestions I would make is to add back & seat cushions to the chairs in the kitchen. Even though the set was pretty, the chairs slanted somewhat backwards and when eating at the table, you had to sit forward & pull chair close to table which wasn't as comfortable for dining. I think the cushions would help with the gap between your back and the back of the chair & make sitting at the table more comfortable. Also, adding a grill brush to the grill would be nice. The grill needed cleaning but there was no cleaning materials for it. It was no biggy for us as we brought our own grill to use but for someone who hadn't, they''d be able to clean the grill to use it. Recommend replacing sheets as well, the fitted sheet had a rip in the right corner at the top of the mattress & sheets were very thin.

Again, for us, no biggy as we always bring sheets from home & we just placed them over the existing sheets but for someone else who doesn't, the sheets were well worn an needed replacing. The dish soap, bar soap & gift coupon to Duck Donuts was particularly a nice thing. We enjoyed those donuts. We did not make use of bar soap but left for the next person. We mainly ate off paper plates so there wasn't a need for the dishwasher but having the choice if needed was nice. We did have very few dishes but we did use some. There wasn't a dish rag or place to put clean dishes but again no biggy, we went to the dollar store & bought 2 dish rags, dish towel & dish mat for small amount. We left them there so hopefully, someone else could benefit from them. These items mentioned do not detract from our cottage stay as we always come prepared. The time we had there was wonderful & the location great. We would recommend it.
