The Neighborhood

There is a fantastic view in all directions and vivid bird life with nesting grounds for 25 species and regular sightings of over 40 species. A birdwatchers paradise. There is also a playground for children. Nice walks. Aurora Borealis (Northern lights) and starry skies in the wintertime.

The location is ideal for exploring the south-west part of Iceland and for day tours around the Reykjanes peninsula, to the Blue Lagoon, to the south coast via Krýsuvík. Thingvellir is less than one hour away and Gullfoss/Geysir about an hour and half.

The neighborhood is the tip of a long narrow peninsula called Hliðsnes and is sparsely populated with a total of only six houses of which one is Hlidsnes House I. It is a country side setting on the ocean front. There is virtually no traffic except for the few locals (8) that live there. It is a paradise for birdwatchers and is considered one of the top two places in Iceland to observe birds with regular annual sightings of at least 41 species of which 25 nest in the area.

The view is panoramic with the Reykjanes peninsula and its mountains to the south-west, south and south-east and continuing east the mountains on Hellisheiði. Further to the north there is Vífilfell then Skálafell and then a fantastic view of Mount Esja the "Mountain of Reykjavik" as it is sometimes called and further to the north-west there is Akrafjall. Birdwatching and just taking a walk in the peaceful surroundings is nice. In the wintertime as the place is far enough from the city lights the starry skies with the constellations and the Aurora Borealis are always visible on clear nights. Books on birds and the night sky are provided. Horses are grazing in the fields all around, often with new born ponies. There is also a fantastic swimming pool in the area (5 min. drive or a nice 30 min. walk) with a large slide and heated pools, a sauna and steam bath.

The location is ideal for exploring the south-west part of Iceland and for day tours around the Reykjanes peninsula, to the Blue Lagoon, to the south coast via Krýsuvík. Why Thor Saari chose Iceland

The location is magnificent on the tip of a narrow peninsula surrounded by the ocean on all sides. With only a total of six houses the area is completely quiet and free of traffic and city lights. A magnificent 360° panoramic view, starry skies and Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) in the wintertime.

Hlidsnes is a paradise for birdwatchers and is considered one of the top two places in Iceland to observe birds as the Hlidsnes area has regular annual sightings of at least 40 species. Of these 21 are all year resident birds, 17 are migrating birds and 4 are transitory migrants. Of the residents and migrants 23 nest in the Hlidsnes area. The transitory migrants are making a stopover on their way from western Europe and west Africa to nesting grounds in Greenland and northern Canada in the spring (April/May) and then return back in the fall (August/October). As a birdwatchers paradise in Iceland Hlidsnes lives up to the name. House I is an excellent place for bird watching as it offers a view, either through the windows or from a viewing platform on the patio, over nesting grounds of several species of which the Arctic Tern with all its flair is the most common.

What makes this house unique

Quiet and calm surroundings. Nature, ocean, silence, hot tub/jacuzzi, playground (swings), panoramic view, mountain view, very peaceful.

Simply perfect !

When we arrived in Iceland our GPS did not work because Iceland is not part of Europe, our host Thor came to us when we got lost, to drive us to the home.

The house and the surroundings are very beautiful . Also the hot pot was perfect with beautifull views . Everything we needed was there : towels, blankets, the beds were made up, cleaning was done well . The house was easy to heet , which was very welcome in this climate .

Privacy was well respected . The house was close to Reykjavik and we visited Gulfoss , Reykjavik, Blue Lagoon, the West part of Iceland, and everything that was within 2 hours from the house . We have no complains at all . Nice home, well located . In the house is a nice collection of books .

We think this home is a very good choise to stay in Iceland .

Notes:
The location is ideal for exploring the south-west part of Iceland whether in the summer- or wintertime. Several day tours in the area are possible. One might be a day tour around the Reykjanes peninsula via the villages of Garður, Sandgerði and Hafnir to the tip of the peninsula and from there on to the fishing town of Grindavík. From Grindavík one might want to go to the Blue Lagoon and then continue along the south coast back home via the geothermal area at Krýsuvik. Another trip could be to the national park at Thingvellir less than one hour away and from there on to the hot springs at Geysir and then Gullfoss waterfall. From there you can take two different routes back. A day trip to and around the Snæfellsnes peninsula is also worth while as the area is really beautiful with a nice coastal road, mountains and with the glacier Snæfellsjökull at the end. There are several villages on that route such as Hellissandur, Ólafsvík, Grundarfjörður and Stykkishólmur.
