Walk-in apartment in a landmark house within walking distance from Staten Island Ferry. Shops and a bus stop next doors.
Take the Staten Island Ferry, which runs 24-7 from the southern tip of Manhattan. Walk along the embankment with a view of the Statue of Liberty, or ride the bus a few minutes straight to our door in the St. George historic district. Step into a Victorian home surrounded by tall trees.
Mount a winding staircase and find yourself in the world of the past, under the tall ceilings, with light from many windows. Enjoy the comfort of three spacious bedrooms and a wide-open living-dining room with a high brick chimney.
Sample the Chinese and Latino takeout steps away if you are on foot. Wander 100 yards away to St. Peter's church, the oldest on Staten Island. Discover the pleasures of our unique 'forgotten borough,' but with Manhattan just a 25-minute sail away.
We enjoyed our stay at this great location. As described, a 15 minute walk will get you to the ferry and to all that NYC has to offer. We hope to come back soon.
Honestly, when we first walked in, I was disappointed by the property. The pictures online made it seem much more charming than what it is. We love historic homes and have owned a Victorian before, so that's what drew us to rent the property in the first place. However, there is still much work to be done on this house. While the amount of space was great with two teenagers and we appreciated having a kitchenette, I'd like to offer a few suggestions to make it better for travelers. The owner seems very kind, so this is not to criticize, only to help, since I think the property has much potential.
1. There are no mugs, glasses or silverware provided. There was a pan, which made no sense since there was no stove (?). Those items should be standard in a place with a kitchenette since people do not travel with them. Luckily, my daughter had bought a mug in the city, so I had something to drink out of and I had a few plastic knives on me for making sandwiches. I did find one sharp knife in the picnic basket, too, but that was it!
2. The property did not seem clean and even smelled a bit dirty. Redoing the floors and stripping the wallpaper with a fresh coat of paint would definitely help brighten it up and make it seem cleaner and more welcoming. Also, there were mouse droppings in the kitchen cabinet-please watch for that when cleaning for the next tenant.
3. No TV was definitely a negative. After a long day in the city, there's nothing better than putting your feet up and watching TV to relax. Luckily, we brought laptops and were able to use the wifi (which was great, by the way) to watch movies, but was still surprised by the lack of a TV.
4. Ceiling fans, especially with the high ceilings, rather than random plug in fans which take up outlet and counter space.
On the plus side, there were plenty of towels and linens and the table and chairs were a nice addition. The bathroom is updated and clean and I appreciated the easy entry with the code on the door. I also liked the unique neighborhood and the walk to the ferry was easy (about 15-20 min). I don't think I would rent the property again, but I do think it has potential to be a really cool and unique place to stay after some work.
Nikolay the owner was awesome, very attentive and kind... the house was exactly what we needed for our stay.. the only thing that could have made the stay benter would have been cable. But overall wonderful experience.. will definately return.
We had a great time in Nikolay's house, Staten Island (02/2016).
We had rented the bottom apartment (smallest one). When we arrived, Nikolay was waiting for us and offered us to occupy the upper apartment (largest one) for the same price! What a good surprise!! The apartment was very well heated (maybe a little too much). Nothing was missing. Beds was all very clean and comfortable (recent change?). The house is located in a quiet and authentic area. This is another facet of NY. We find all necessary shops around. Access to the ferry was very fast; we walked every day with our four young children (youngest is 6 years old) with no problem; just 15 minutes. When children was tired, we took the bus which stops just before the house. In summary, Nikolay's rental is a very good rental. We already recommend it to our friends. Finally a big thank you to Nikolay for its warm welcome and its discrete presence.
Totally unfit for accommodation. First impressions were that we had been dropped off at wrong address. Total disrepair outside and inside. window frames rotted, no controls for heating, access to shower room/toilet was through 2nd bedroom,no wardrobes or drawers so had to live out of suitcases,etc.etc..
