As you may know the dishwasher does not work. So, if this is a deal breaker, don't come. Now, positives:: The beach butler worked and was a pleasure. The a/c worked well all week on 72. Internet was fast. The location is good, close to the beach. The gas grill worked. It was well equipped if you could find it.
Negatives: The place needs a good deep cleaning. Master bed was hard and lumpy. Bed swing downstairs is just a bare mattress (fix it up or take it down). Generally things didn't work well.
Like I said, quirky.
Where to start? Dishwasher still out of order. Air conditioner came with instructions which were had to keep it at 72 or higher. We set on 73 to be safe. Well the air struggled to keep up but with the instructions just figured it was a struggling unit. On the third day we woke up late as we was just planning a lazy day around the house. Well that didn't happen the temperature just kept rising during day. I guess we didn't notice that the other days because we was not there during day. We called owner said she would call air conditioner guy but couldn't guarantee he would be there before the next day. The air conditioner had frozen up was the issue so we turned it off and went to beach etc. came back and it had unfrozen. Turned air on and went to dinner came back and unit was freezing up already and hadn't cooled house down any. The house was a toasty 82 degrees. I know this is an ongoing issue as indicated by note and how owner reacted to our call. Also the white wooden box in the picture under the house was warped and had mold/mildew on it because it sits directly below air conditioner lines, so not the first time the unit has froze up and had to be unthawed. Needless to say we did not sleep in the 80 degree house that showed no signs of cooling. Owner did not want to try to make other accommodations, just said sorry if you would have called earlier I could have gotten my air conditioner guy there. The house was full of other maintenance issues including holes in doors. The dishwasher has been out of order for a while now. And other people reported issues with the air conditioner. Travelers beware better yet look at a different place on dauphin island.
We enjoyed the house and Dauphin Island as a whole. The area is great and peaceful. Perfect for relaxing, but close enough to other things for some adventuring. We will be back!
A very short walk to the beach. Spent hours walking on the beach, very few people on the beach. Less commercialism than other beach areas which makes for a very relaxing vacation. Owner is very pleasant to rent from. Thank you.
The house was very clean and tidy and had everything you could need for a short stay in a beach house. It had a few minor places that the owners need to attend to that we saw others have left comments about but for whatever reason they have decided to not address. Thankfully the weather was comfortable enough that we did not require the use of the heat or air since the owners seem to be experiencing problems with their central AC unit as noted by the message left above the thermostat. Someone has posted on here that it comes with "Dish", No it does NOT!! it only comes with over-the-air on all TV's and it was spotty at that. We did see a Dish on the side of the house but apparently that was reserved just for the owners.
All in all... It is a nice little beach house and if you are looking for a quiet place near the beach to get away for a few days with your family or special loved one then I'd have to say this hits all the right buttons.
The Island is quaint.. We found everyone we met to be very friendly and the food for the most part although a little pricey not bad after a day running around exploring the island.
We enjoyed our mini vacation of 5 days very much.
The furnishings are fine and plenty of space for a family, although there was only two of us.
The bed in the master bedroom was very comfortable, we didn't try the others...no need to make more laundry.
The "cargo" elevator is a BLESSING when coming and going to transport luggage etc and no need to lug it all up and down the stairs in the Gulfcoast heat.
Some FYI's, which did not hinder our visit, but may be a concern to others:
BRING DISPOSABLE PLATES, CUPS, FLATWARE. (Nearest "grocery " store is 15 miles) Dishwasher is still not working, there was an out of order memo note on it. No issue for just two of us, but if there are more people, no one wants to spend their time doing dishes.
The home is well used as in the doors and woodwork are "dinged and banged" up. There was a hole in one where a door was opened into a closet door behind it.
Note that in the photos there is a table on the deck that seats 6 with an umbrella, non-existent. There is a molded plastic table with one chair to use, the other chair is cracked and broken, so, no meals on the deck, if you that is what you were planning.
There are four beautiful lounge chairs on the deck, perfect for viewing the constellations in the night sky.
Great value for money.
