Photos and Description of this Afton holiday farmhouse

Historic Farm House Located At Cardinal Point Winery Near Charlottesville

A renovated 19th century gem, the Cardinal Point Farmhouse is located in Afton, VA, and has impressive and unimpeded views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This five bedroom historic farmhouse is located among the vineyards of Cardinal Point Winery and is conveniently located near several other wineries, breweries, a cidery and a distillery. Stunning views of the Blue Ridge mountains abound, from the house, and especially from the pool. Enjoy relaxing with a book on our screened side porch, on the front porch swing or in the hammock. We hope you'll find our family home a welcome retreat from your daily grind.

The house has five bedrooms, three full bathrooms and sleeps eight guests (plus two more at an additional cost of $75/person/night). A large, bright kitchen area filled with natural light, complete with a built-in bench along the wall, makes entertaining while cooking a breeze. The kitchen has custom cherry cabinets, butcher block countertops and is designed with the amateur chef in mind. There is a double sink, a gas stove, two ovens, dishwasher, side-by-side refrigerator with an ice and water dispenser, a wine refrigerator and a bar sink. Appliances also include a blender, toaster, coffee maker, food processor, hand blender, microwave, and standing mixer. If you love to cook and entertain, this is a beautiful kitchen.

Off the kitchen area, our comfortable living area has a full sofa and a love seat. A nice wall-mounted 43" Smart LED HDTV and DVD player will make relaxing easy. Wifi is available through Dish Network satellite service.

If you are more in the mood to unwind and enjoy views of the vineyard and mountains from the indoors, you can sit in our glassed-in side porch. Wicker furniture affords comfort as you raise a glass of wine to the spectacular Blue Ridge.

Dining areas include a breakfast nook right off the side entrance and a formal dining room off the kitchen. The breakfast nook table seats four but has a leaf that can be added so that six may use it. The formal dining room table seats six with a leaf increasing seating to ten people.

There are two bedrooms on the first floor as well as two full baths. The master bedroom has a queen size bed and connects to master bathroom, which has double sinks, a shower and a jetted tub. The second bedroom has a queen size bed and connects to a newly renovated bathroom with shower. This bathroom also has an entry in the front hall, and is equipped with a pocket door so that guests can access the powder room while the shower is in use.

Upstairs, you will find three bedrooms, a full bathroom and a library. One bedroom has a queen bed, a large dresser, and a wardrobe. The second bedroom has twin beds and a seating area. The third bedroom, with a queen bed, opens onto a balcony with a seating area and 180 degree views of the vineyards and mountains. Also, there is an extensive library with comfortable seating for you to enjoy.

A front loading washer and dryer are located on the first floor. The house is equipped with a whole house generator in case of a rare power outage.

Linens, towels, soap, hair dryers, dishwasher detergent, laundry detergent, paper towels, napkins, saran wrap/foil/wax paper/ziploc bags, toilet paper, trash bags, and are provided. We will also provide shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes and other sundry items in case you forgot yours at no extra charge.

Outside, you can enjoy our in-ground pool during warmer months. Surrounded by a brick patio and anchored by an elevated deck you will be able enjoy unparalleled views of the Blue Ridge. If you are looking to take advantage of more shade, the front porch swing and two rocking chairs will suit nicely. There is also a small garden patio off the front entrance.

About Susan Gorman

Years ago, while stationed in the small city of Bad Kreuznach, Germany on the banks of the Nahe River, Paul and Ruth Gorman discovered a passion for the Riesling wines that were crafted with care in the little vineyards surrounding the town. It was then and there that they decided to add their own vineyard to their retirement plans. While stationed in Panama, Paul and Ruth came up to Virginia to look for a property to which to retire. The property has been an apple and peach orchard in the past, as well as a sheep farm. Although the building was rather shambling, the Gormans bought it knowing that it could be restored to something beautiful.

In 1985, Paul retired from the army, and they moved to their farm in Afton, which they called Cardinal Point. Their first order of business was to install the first four acres — two acres each of Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon — on what is now Cardinal Point Vineyard. While eldest son John, a graduate of UVa's architecture school, oversaw the renovation of the old farmhouse on the property, daughter Sarah and youngest son Tim tended the vines while home from school during the summers.

Tim took over as full-time Vineyard Manager in 1989, and has grown the Vineyard to 15 acres, supporting a variety of vinifera. In 2002, Paul and Ruth finally realized their dream of erecting a winery on the premises. Tim now adds wine making to his farm duties, and the rest of the family share responsibilities in the enterprise. We are proud to have Cardinal Point on the property, and we hope you will enjoy what it has to offer.

Why Susan Gorman chose Central Virginia

The Afton and northern part of Nelson County is a beautiful and very special place. It is conveniently located just 25 minutes from Charlottesville and 15 minutes from both Waynesboro and Crozet. There is so much to do in our area and so many natural resources to take advantage of, that we think you will also enjoy your stay at Cardinal Point.

Amazing 'gem' with breath taking views of the mountains served as our family reunion HQ!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first attempt at gathering a family of approx. 50 together in one place for a reunion and The Farmhouse at Cardinal Point served as the central gathering place! The house was wonderful...fully stocked with anything we could possibly need, whether it was items for cooking, serving, extra bedding, and two refrigerators on site! Also, the home was clean and comfortable....great floor plan for lots of 'mini' gatherings and large enough that when it rained, everyone was able to be inside at one point. The property is very spacious, allowing us to set up two 10x10' tents, bag chairs, and tables under the tents to serve the food, as well as setting up Croquet, bocce, and other games. Having a pool was a lifesaver, given the heat and the kids could have stayed in all day! The bonus is the location - minutes to breweries and we even walked down the hill to do a tasting at the Cardinal Point Winery. Finally, the owners were amazingly responsive! We would text them questions and the response was immediate and when we needed anything (because we hadn't planned for it), they drove over to help us out. We highly recommend this venue and couldn't have had a better time!

Fantastic Escape

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 needed a getaway from the hustle and bustle of the big city. We were not disappointed. As soon as we arrived, we all exhaled a little. The house is very welcoming and provided plenty of space for our big family. It was clean and well cared for by owners who clearly take pride in their home. What we loved most was the pool and the incredible view. First the pool, we could not get our 4 kids out of it. It was so nice to let them splash around while we sat on the lovely pool deck and enjoyed the amazing view. And the view is amazing. It changes throughout the day as the light changes. It was especially magical at sunset and just after. And then the stars came out! We don't see that many stars where we live. Simply beautiful. The owner was very welcoming and accommodating and really made us feel at home. We didn't leave the house much, but when we did it was to grab a meal at the Blue Mountain Brewery nearby which as wonderful. We look forward to coming back and exploring the area more. My only advice is plan to bring the groceries you need when you arrive. You won't want to leave again to go to the store. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare a just bring the food (and coffee)!! You don't need to bring wine as the Cardinal Point winery is a short walk away!

The Cardinal Point Farmhouse is a wonderful place for a celebration

  • 5 of 5

The cardinal point farmhouse was a wonderful place for our extended family to gather. The house itself had plenty of room and a large well-stocked kitchen, and there were so many places around the property for people to gather.

The five bedrooms were very comfortable and had beautiful views. Even the downstairs rooms are private and quiet if some of your party like to retire earlier than the rest.

It was a joy to prepare and serve meals for our large group in the spacious and beautiful kitchen. The dining room was perfect for meals or games, and the sun porch and tv room were both comfortable.

Our group enjoyed exploring the grounds, and over the course of the weekend we would find groups gathered under the trees, on the porch, around the pool, on the pool deck, or wandering the vineyards.

Cardinal Point Winery is a short walk through the vineyards, and the staff there was friendly and charming. And of course the wine is excellent.

We definitely recommend the farmhouse and hope to come back.

Cardinal Point Farm House

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the farm house at Cardinal Point Winery. Located in the country in Afton Virginia, the farm house is close to Monticello and Charlottesville / UVA as well als the Blue Ridge Parkway. Importantly, it is also close to several Vineyards and multiple microbreweries! Another unwritten amenity is the excellent trout fishing in nearby streams. The farm house truly sleeps 10 people in five bedrooms, has a large kitchen with full appliances. Nice location, nice house. We'll visit again.

Amazing hospitable place

  • 5 of 5

Great location in the very heart of Virginia. If you want to experience local life and hospitality with a magnificent spectacular view from every single inch of property - it's definitely for you. Good for both a mad family/friends reunion or a discreet romantic getaway for 2.

The rooms and facilities themselves are pretty posh, close to rustick style, and also very clean. You get the great kitchen appliances and the large bathrooms, lots of towels and utensils. Susan is very nice and kind hearted owner, always ready to help, answer questions etc. in short, we had 3 days of pure happiness and hope to get back soon.
