About the property

Brand new to rentals! Downtown Civil War Home ~~~~ 2 Blocks From Lincoln Square

An historic vacation getaway tailored for discriminating guests who desire an authentic Gettysburg experience while catering to all your 21st century comforts allowing you and your friends/family to enjoy exclusive and private occupancy of the entire house.

Our circa 1839 York Street Manor stood as a brick sentinel in the path of retreating Federal soldiers on July 1, 1863. Confederate troops camped in these very yards while General Ewell planned his repeated strategy to take Culp’s Hill only several houses east of here.

Owned by Cecilia Codori (of the prominent Codori’s of Gettysburg), she and her husband Joseph called this manor home from 1850 to 1865. In 1865, the house’s proud new owner was William F. Baker, an officer of the 87th Pennsylvania Volunteers. In 1870, ownership transferred to John and Catherine Culp, with the road to Culp’s Hill (East Confederate Avenue) just two blocks south.

Memoirs of a 16 year old girl who lived across the street (Liberty Hollinger) recalled her and her father yelling at the soldiers looting the unoccupied homes across from her's, and how General Robert E. Lee and his command paused before these houses on their mounts surveying their strength. A temporary Confederate grave was located in the backyard of Cecilia and Joseph’s property.

Nestled only two blocks from the heart of downtown Gettysburg’s Lincoln Square, enjoy the antebellum homes along York Street as you leisurely stroll to restaurants, pubs, eateries, retail shoppes and antique stores, including the nostalgic Majestic movie theater.

Our Accommodations:

Each of our three bedrooms has its own private on-suite bath, and the house provides you with not one, but two master suites.

Master Suite 1: The first floor Lincoln Master Bedroom boasts a king size memory foam bed fit for a Presidential stay. Flanking the bedroom is the master bath, extending the length of the room, with lavish amenities which compliment the radiant heated floor to keep you cozy in cooler seasons.

Master Suite 2: The spacious 2nd floor Codori Master Suite offers you a queen size mattress, full parlor/sitting room and includes a separate dressing room attached to your on-suite private bath. Fronting York Street, you can almost see General Lee’s army proceeding past.

Bedroom 3: The John Culp room bears its namesake from an owner of the house and of the famous Culp family of Gettysburg. Take a step back in time and relax in you queen size bed and on-suite private bath with marble floor that transports you to days of old, with the original Civil War exposed brick wall set against a refinished cast iron claw foot bathtub and shower.

Antiquity meets modernity in each bedroom which is equipped with wall-mounted flat screen televisions, digital clocks equipped with usb ports (no more charging your phone from across the room) with soft towels and clean bedding upon arrival. Extra pillow top auto-inflate air bed for 7th guest in Codori parlor.

Relax on the 2nd floor screened in porch, or enjoy your favorite drink on the back yard porch. Bring your own wine and keep it that perfect temperature in our wine chiller located in the separate media room (complete with 46” TV and DVD player to watch your favorite Civil War movies). You can be chef for the day and prepare dinner in our modern kitchen, complete with granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances, or treat yourself to grilling your favorite barbecue in the backyard (seasonal).

Off-street parking is extremely convenient in the three bay garage which sets on the same location of the original carriage barn along Race Horse Alley.

We want you to enjoy your stay at the Historic York Street Manor every time you visit Gettysburg.

We enjoyed all the effort and time spent to provide the unique and special touches that make the Manor a very special place to enjoy family and friends!

About Frank

Lifetime Civil War enthusiasts that have been going to Gettysburg for over 30 years. For our vacation home, we wanted to provide our valued guests the same thing we look for in a home in this historic town---character, ambiance of everything Civil War, including the distinguished bronze plaque confirming this home stood at this exact location during the battle.

Why Frank chose Gettysburg

Two blocks from Lincoln Square in downtown Gettysburg.

Original structure

Civil War furnishings throughout

Owned by famous families of Gettysburg

Owned by a Pennsylvania soldier from the 87th Pa. Vols

Old charm character throughout the house

What makes this estate unique

Pictured in a famous book of original photographs taken after the battle from a viewpoint on Cemetery Hill, this house can be seen as it stood during the cannon explosions and rifle fire during the 3-day battle. Over this terrain, the Louisiana Tigers pursued Federal Troops through town and eventually to Cemetery Hill. As Costner's men retreated, many Union soldiers hid in these homes to avoid capture.

Loved the property. Best experience ever!

  • 5 of 5

The Inn was magnificent! The location to downtown was perfect and the Inn itself was spectacular. I think the one thing we enjoyed the most was the back porch. Having all the amenities, use of the kitchen, plenty of bathrooms and the ability to really relax was appreciated. I have been to Gettysburg more times than I can count and this was definitely the best experience ever! The Inn will definitely be in the cards for future visits.

Frank was great in making sure we had everything we needed. The house was clean and well maintained.

We enjoyed our usual haunts and have been making recommendations to my friends who visit Gettysburg.

Thanks again Frank and Donna for a great place and for providing the basis for a great time.

Lovely, Lovely, Lovely

  • 5 of 5

Our family gathered in Gettysburg to celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving and take time to visit each other and catch up. Our kids came from Brooklyn, NY and we traveled from Toronto. We have been to Gettysburg many times and love the the history and depth it offers.

This wonderful home was the ideal place to stay. It is rich in history and meaning while at the same time offers privacy (all bedrooms had en-suites). relaxation (beautifully decorated and all necessities provided for example water, wine, coffee, tea, etc), and comfort (kitchen fully equipped, luxurious towels, linens and many areas to sit and relax) yet all of Gettysburg and what it has to offer is a short walk from the front door.

Our host was readily available to answer any questions at any time and obviously wanted us to have a memorable stay...which it most definitely was. We plan to return next year.

You couldn't ask for a better home, location or host.

Thank you for sharing your home!

Authentically restored home with great amenities in beautiful location. .

  • 5 of 5

The home was immaculate. The owner provided everything we needed including a history of the beautifully restored home. We felt that we were back in 1863. It was convenient for us to see the battlefields, to tour the town and to visit some great restaurants. we would highly recommend this home for anyone visiting Gettysburg.

Gettysburg gem

Fantastic visit with our grown children. Host was attentive, very helpful, and responsive to any questions from restaurant suggestions to sights to see. Home is convenient to everything - battlefield park, shops and restaurants. Home itself is part of history but supplied with all the creature comforts. I would stay again and highly recommend! Thanks!

Beyond Expectations! A sense of history with modern amenities, and walk to town!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this home for our son's graduation - we were intent on being walking distance to town and the college. The photo does not do justice to this property! It was bigger and more spacious than we expected and accomodated our group beautifully. It was decorated in a style reflecting its history with furniture, photos, books, artifacts, beautifully restored floors and a gorgeous ceiling in the parlor - all this with modern amenities - kitchen & bathroom fixtures and technology - and did I mention spotless! A fun audio tour helped us discover the wonderful sun room; whose door I didn't even think to open until hearing about it on tape! There were plenty of reading materials about Gettysburg (including a new book "Civil War Time Travel" by the owner, Frank and videos which we enjoyed. The porch and backyard was a great gathering space with comfortable seating and view of a pretty little garden. The garage also made it easy to leave bike racks and coolers needed for graduation events. The home reflects the care and attention to detail that Frank & Donna put into it. Beverages, condiments, coffee and kitchen supplies were well thought out. My only regret is that we didn't discover it until my son's senior year - we could have been staying here all along especially in the spring for the lacrosse season! Frank was a pleasure to work with - I highly recommend this property.

Frank and Donna's York Street home -an absolutely delightful place to stay while touring Gettysburg!

  • 5 of 5

The home is a great location for getting to the battlefield, museums, and some fabulous farm to table restaurants. They have thought of all the little niceties from water and wine to tissues and toothpaste along with all the technical appointments one could hope for! They are readily available by phone for any questions one might have! There's a good chance we will be back because there is more to do in Gettysburg than one weekend can hold!
