Photos and Description of this Mountshannon holiday house

7 bedrooms, Sleeps 2-17

Luxurious house, situated two hours from Kerry, one hour from Galway, 40 mins from The Burren, 45 minutes from Shannon Airport and 500m from the beautiful, award winning village of Mountshannon, this property is truly a special find - ideal for touring the southwest of Ireland as well as being just 2.5 hours from Dublin.

The local area is well known for golfing, fishing, hiking and water-sports, and hosts one of the most successful Arts festivals in Ireland. Music is available in local pubs in season, and there are several good restaurants nearby.

The house is an architect designed high quality detached home - set on 1.5 acres , with 180 degree views over Lough Derg and the Tipperary Hills. It is designed to take full advantage of the views, and is a warm home - timber framed with zoned central heating and wood burning stoves . The ceilings are higher than standard, giving a bright airy feel to the home. Accommodation comprises the following:

A large kitchen/living-room/dining-room is at the centre of this home, with southerly aspect, and magnificent views of the lake. This space has a sound system with built in speakers . A three metre square roof window makes this a particularly bright space. The room is adjoined by a living-room with TV - which also has a wood-burning stove.

Bedrooms 1 and 2 are at the west of the property, and enjoy en-suite facilities and patios. Bedroom 3 is a double bedroom with magnificent views over the lake and mountains.

Bedrooms 4 and 5 are located within the Diner area of the house, loved by families with younger guests. This area has a Diner style living area with a bar, and a double and twin bedroom.

The suite beside the house has two inter-connecting bedrooms( 6 and 7), one with a double bed, one with twin beds. There is also a small shower room with toilet and whb.

In additional, there is a small child's bed and a travel cot available on request.

Outside, there are extensive patio and decked areas - ideal for lounging or dining al fresco. Children love to play in the huge garden, which also has a greenhouse with herbs that guests are welcome to use. Many guests have cancelled touring plans, preferring to use the space for a stay-cation - especially those who are enjoying family reunion visits.

The East Clare way walking route ( easy to moderate) passes by, and the area is a particularly restful place, with forests, bog-land walks and beautiful unspoiled views over the mountains and lake. Attractions include Holy Island - accessible by a short boat trip available from the harbor - it is one of the earliest Monastic settlements in Ireland (500AD). There is a great park with children's playground and adult gym equipment, a maze, and at the harbour there is an Eagle viewing station.

There are restaurants and local pubs full of atmosphere and charm.

The calendar is updated regularly, but the property is sometimes provisionally booked for use by friends/family, so always contact us for cancellations and an individualized offering suitable for your needs.

Keywords: Large luxurious residence, sleeps up to 17, ideally located for touring West and Southwest. Less than one hour day -trip to southwest destinations, like Galway, The Burren, The Cliffs of Moher

About Mary O'Keeffe

Hiking, cooking, gardening, history, literature, art, music, sailing, cycling and travel are some of our interests.

Mary O'Keeffe purchased this house in 2005

Why Mary O'Keeffe chose County Clare

Mountshannon is one of the prettiest villages in Ireland, once won the coveted overall Tidy Towns prize, and always features at the top end of this National competition for beautiful places. Overlooking the harbour, and enjoying a wonderful vista of Lough Derg lake and the Tipperary Hills, the setting is spectacular. Great walking, cycling, sailing, fishing, golf and other leisure activities are available locally. One of the oldest monastic settlements in Ireland is on our doorstep, and the area also has excellent pubs and restaurants. The white-tailed eagles nest in Bushy Island which is visible from the property - no need to bring your binoculars to spot this rare bird nesting in Ireland for the first time in 150 years - there is a super viewing facility at the harbour.

The house itself is bright, spacious, well-maintained and enjoys amazing views from the main living space. There is a separate living room - The Diner - for younger guests to enjoy DVD's and board games. The bedrooms are in 4 separate areas, including a separate building right beside the house that is a two-bedroom family suite. The space allows guests privacy whilst also having generous "together" living areas both inside and outside over-looking the harbor and hills.

What makes this house unique

Enjoy the spectacular views while lounging on the extensive outdoor space. Watch the boats come and go in the harbour below the dining area. Walk the East Clare Way in the hills on your doorstep. Take a boat trip to Holy Island and experience 1,500 years of history. Watch the white-tailed eagles from the viewing facility at the harbor. Take several day trips to The Cliffs of Moher, The Burren, The Alwee Caves, Galway, Bunratty Castle, Adare, and many other local attractions.

Un superbe havre de paix !!

  • 5 of 5

Excellent all around

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at this lovely home for the week leading up to our daughters wedding. We did many day trips and used Mount Shannon as our base, it was so wonderful to come "home" to such a lovely place at the end of a busy day.

The house itself is well accommodated with everything you may need. It is spotless, and more beautiful then the photos. We enjoyed the comfortable furnishings and the beds were fabulous! The showers were large and we always had plenty of hot water. The views of the lake early in the morning are so calming and the sunsets are fantastic. We even made friends with the sheep and donkeys in the field behind the house. But our favorite thing was the night skies, so many stars and so, so quiet. What a wonderful relaxing home. I highly recommend the house and the fantastic people who rent it. They were more than accommodating, provided a lot of useful information and just in general are a pleasure to deal with! They even delivered something we forgot to us to help us on the wedding day!

Gorgeous property, lovely start

  • 5 of 5

Mary was a great host and we loved our time in mountshannon. The property is even prettier in real life and the views are stunning. We were there with a large group and Mary was accommodating of our requests, and even had a highchair and a cot for the younger guests. My son loved the sheep that were almost in the backyard and the adults loved the views of the lake.

Relaxation Vacation

  • 5 of 5

What an excellent home for our 2 families of 4 adults, 2 boys (14 and 12), and 2 girls (10 and 11). Plenty of space for everyone. The house and the grounds are perfect. The pictures that are posted on the VRBO website don't do it justice, the views are just spectacular. We could have stayed at the house all week and not have gone anywhere and still would have been a perfect vacation. We did make several day trips to see the sights, but were always excited to return to the home for card games after a dinner at the hotel or the snug in the village. We cooked a few times at the house as well. I know we all agreed that this was the highlight of our week and a half in Ireland. Mary and her folks were quick to respond to any questions we had. Thanks again for a great stay. I am bringing a picture of the view from your back porch to my office so I can remember that when I need to relax.

A jewel among vacation rentals

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful experience staying at this beautiful house in the picturesque village of Mountshannon. If you are looking for a place to stay while exploring Ireland's west coast, look no further. To us, the house was truly a luxury experience - gorgeous setting, awesome views, modern and spacious interior, and plenty of amenities, utensils, etc. for us to use, including enough bathrooms for our group. We originally had 7 people with us, but had rented the house for 12. When my dad came to stay for a few days, we still had a private bedroom available for him. And when my sisters and kids showed up, the owner had no objections to their visit, which gave us the opportunity to enjoy a much-needed family reunion. Despite the damp weather, we were able to take advantage of both indoors and outdoors to give the kids room to run off their energy. The owner's hospitality and recommendations of local attractions completed our stay. We loved every minute of it! Given the opportunity, I'd return in a heartbeat. Thank you!

Perfect in every way

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from a long weekend in this beautiful home and we really couldn't speak any higher of the house, the location, the setup or the friendly welcome we received.

From the initial enquiry, through to closing the door as we left (reluctantly!) the entire experience was an absolute pleasure.

The booking process, information received and attention to detail ensured that we were setup perfectly for our stay.

On our way to the house, using the detailed directions which we received in advance, we could see that the location was stunning. But only when you open the front door and enter the main living space do you realise just how picturesque the area is. The views across the lake are sensational. Especially if you're lucky enough (as we were) to have clear blue skies!

The house is immaculately presented, the living spaces and bedrooms are perfect. We travelled as a group of 8 adults and had more than enough space.

You immediately feel at home and the owners have thought of everything to ensure that you have everything you need. There are simple and clear instructions for everything you're likely to need, i.e. TV, audio, oven, drier, recycling details etc.

If the weather allows, then the large garden and patio are perfect for a few games, a bbq, or just to relax and enjoy the scenery.

If using the house as a base then there are plenty of attractions within easy reach by car.

We did a fair bit of travelling around but also loved the local village which was about a 15 min walk or a couple of mins in the car, where you can find a petrol station\convenience store, 3 local pubs and a restaurant (the snug).

We didn't try the Snug as we self catered back at the house (you'd struggle to find a restaurant anywhere in Europe with a better view to look out on while you have your meals), but we visited each of the 3 pubs. One of which; Spud's Place, had live music on the Saturday night and had a great atmosphere.

There's also the tourist information centre, maze and really nice park between the lake and the village.

We really hope to be back again in the future and would absolutely recommend this house!

The property is ideally located for touring the south-west of Ireland. Day trips to The Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty Castle, The Burren, golf and surfing at Laninch, Galway and Connemara are all within easy reach. Locally, there are boats for hire to explore the lake, and boat trips to the earliest monastic settlement at Holy Island. There are several parks and walking routes, and a children's playground. There is also horse-riding, music and great pubs and restaurants. There is a great fishing service with fully equipped boats - and the area is renowned for pike fishing (Sept- March).

The property has extensive living and decking areas, and is suitable for several families to share. The house is built all on one level, with level access to the outside areas.
