About the property

7 bedrooms, Sleeps 2-17

Luxurious house, situated two hours from Kerry, one hour from Galway, 40 mins from The Burren, 45 minutes from Shannon Airport and 500m from the beautiful, award winning village of Mountshannon, this property is truly a special find - ideal for touring the southwest of Ireland as well as being just 2.5 hours from Dublin.

The local area is well known for golfing, fishing, hiking and water-sports, and hosts one of the most successful Arts festivals in Ireland. Music is available in local pubs in season, and there are several good restaurants nearby.

The house is an architect designed high quality detached home - set on 1.5 acres , with 180 degree views over Lough Derg and the Tipperary Hills. It is designed to take full advantage of the views, and is a warm home - timber framed with zoned central heating and wood burning stoves . The ceilings are higher than standard, giving a bright airy feel to the home. The picture includes one dining table - there is another of similar size, in total there is comfortable dining facility for up to 16 people. Accommodation comprises the following:

A large kitchen/living-room/dining-room is at the centre of this home, with southerly aspect, and magnificent views of the lake. This space has a sound system with built in speakers . A three metre square roof window makes this a particularly bright space. The room is adjoined by a living-room with TV - which also has a wood-burning stove.

Bedrooms 1 and 2 are at the west of the property, and enjoy en-suite facilities and patios. Bedroom 3 is a double bedroom with magnificent views over the lake and mountains.

Bedrooms 4 and 5 are located within the Diner area of the house, loved by families with younger guests. This area has a Diner style living area with a bar, and a double and twin bedroom.

The suite beside the house has two inter-connecting bedrooms( 6 and 7), one with a double bed, one with twin beds. There is also a small shower room with toilet and whb.

In additional, there is a small child's bed and a travel cot available on request.

Outside, there are extensive patio and decked areas - ideal for lounging or dining al fresco. Children love to play in the huge garden, which also has a greenhouse with herbs that guests are welcome to use. Many guests have cancelled touring plans, preferring to use the space for a stay-cation - especially those who are enjoying family reunion visits.

The East Clare way walking route ( easy to moderate) passes by, and the area is a particularly restful place, with forests, bog-land walks and beautiful unspoiled views over the mountains and lake. Attractions include Holy Island - accessible by a short boat trip available from the harbor - it is one of the earliest Monastic settlements in Ireland (500AD). There is a great park with children's playground and adult gym equipment, a maze, and at the harbour there is an Eagle viewing station.

There are restaurants and local pubs full of atmosphere and charm.

The calendar is updated regularly, but the property is sometimes provisionally booked for use by friends/family, so always contact us for cancellations and an individualized offering suitable for your needs.

Keywords: Large luxurious residence, sleeps up to 17, ideally located for touring West and Southwest. Less than one hour day -trip to southwest destinations, like Galway, The Burren, The Cliffs of Moher

About Mary O'Keeffe

Hiking, cooking, gardening, history, literature, art, music, sailing, cycling and travel are some of our interests.

Mary O'Keeffe purchased this house in 2005

Why Mary O'Keeffe chose County Clare

Mountshannon is one of the prettiest villages in Ireland, once won the coveted overall Tidy Towns prize, and always features at the top end of this National competition for beautiful places. Overlooking the harbour, and enjoying a wonderful vista of Lough Derg lake and the Tipperary Hills, the setting is spectacular. Great walking, cycling, sailing, fishing, golf and other leisure activities are available locally. One of the oldest monastic settlements in Ireland is on our doorstep, and the area also has excellent pubs and restaurants. The white-tailed eagles nest in Bushy Island which is visible from the property - no need to bring your binoculars to spot this rare bird nesting in Ireland for the first time in 150 years - there is a super viewing facility at the harbour.

The house itself is bright, spacious, well-maintained and enjoys amazing views from the main living space. There is a separate living room - The Diner - for younger guests to enjoy DVD's and board games. The bedrooms are in 4 separate areas, including a separate building right beside the house that is a two-bedroom family suite. The space allows guests privacy whilst also having generous "together" living areas both inside and outside over-looking the harbor and hills.

What makes this house unique

Enjoy the spectacular views while lounging on the extensive outdoor space. Watch the boats come and go in the harbour below the dining area. Walk the East Clare Way in the hills on your doorstep. Take a boat trip to Holy Island and experience 1,500 years of history. Watch the white-tailed eagles from the viewing facility at the harbor. Take several day trips to The Cliffs of Moher, The Burren, The Alwee Caves, Galway, Bunratty Castle, Adare, and many other local attractions.

Most of our guests think the photos do not do justice to the extraordinary views over the lake and hills. One guest review suggests the view is probably the best available dining view in Europe! The property has extensive living and decking areas, and is suitable for several families to share. The house is built all on one level, with level access to the outside areas.

We absolutely loved our stay. The home was roomy with an open kitchen which we used every day. Very clean, which is extremely important to us and the beds we're comfortable. The hosts where extremely helpful. The lake was a short drive or long walk away and provided some incredible sunsets and fantastic pictures we will treasure forever. It is a fantastic vacation home. We will be back.

Spacious home and beautiful views!

  • 5 of 5

The house is spacious and well-equipped and the views are beautiful! There is plenty of room outside for children to run around and several decks/patios. Mary is wonderful to work with - she gives you your privacy, but is readily available for any questions. She did a wonderful job in providing directions to the house, nearby restaurants, stores, and places to visit - and even baked us a gorgeous and delicious apple pie! We enjoyed our time in Mountshannon. The only possible negative about the house is the bathroom set-up. There is only one true en-suite, a second en-suit opens to the entryway of the house, and then there is a third bathroom. It wasn't a deal-breaker for us, (one family of eight) but is definitely something to consider if sharing with others. The pictures do accurately represent the house.

The property was beautiful and way beyond expectations.

  • 5 of 5

The pictures don't do the home and views justice. We arrived to find a freshly baked apple pie in the refrigerator, I love apple pie! The home was clean and well taken care of. The views were beautiful and the neighbors were very friendly (sheep and donkeys). When we had a problem with the water pressure, it was taken care of immediately. Overall we were very happy with the property and would stay there again.

House from the movies!

  • 5 of 5

Our extended family of 14 adults and two babies stayed in this wonderful place. The views are fabulous, the area is very scenic and day trips to The Cliffs of Moher and Galway were wonderful. Some of our party played golf at the local East Clare Golf Club and Portumna. The house itself is amazing, the living areas and some of the bedrooms had spectacular views. It had wifi that was fast, much better than usual in holiday accommodation. It felt like a modern hotel in a great place, all to ourselves. We loved the huge outdoor space, and had a BBQ one evening and lit the fire pit and enjoyed watching the sun go down over the lake- the view really is something. The whole place is impeccably maintained and everything we needed was there. The owner was warm and friendly, very helpful in planning our trip. We would love to return some day.

Serene setting for a great house

  • 5 of 5

Our family of seven, ages 35-80, loved this comfortable house with its great deck , pastoral setting with wonderful lake view, and lots of natural light from the many front windows. The kitchen was well equipped, the bedding and linens were of good quality, the stoves well supplied with wood and peat, and the laundry facilities were excellent. The the stoves well

. The only criticism might be that only two bedrooms had private baths, the others had to share (the younger members of the family didn't mind that much).

The owners are excellent to work with, attentive to be sure you are happy and even baked special treats for us .

Although the location is somewhat remote, the setting and the property itself more than make up for the distances

needed for restaurants, groceries etc.

We would return again to this property with great anticipation

Fabulous property which lives up to its description!

  • 5 of 5

We spent four nights at this beautiful lakeside house which feels very homely and cosy without any of the clutter! We held a small family get together in the house and found the layout to be fantastic as everyone had their own sleeping quarters which provided privacy and space but the open plan living area allowed everyone to hang out together during the day. The house was exceptionally clean, well-maintained and warm. The kitchen was very well equipped. Customer service from our first enquiry through to leaving the property was outstanding. The local area Mountrath is very nice and particularly good for families with small children - nice areas to play and walk. The main highlight of the house for me was the light, spaciousness and lake views. The highlight for our four year old was lying out on the decked area in the dark seeing the milky way for the first time - along with a shooting star! I would highly recommend this property and hope to return for another visit in the future.

Owner's Response: Thanks for that Olivia. It is of course Mountshannon not Mountrath! With all the "Mounts" in Ireland it is hard to remember which is which! Hope to see you again soon...

The property is ideally located for touring the south-west of Ireland. Day trips to The Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty Castle, The Burren, golf and surfing at Laninch, Galway and Connemara are all within easy reach. Locally, there are boats for hire to explore the lake, and boat trips to the earliest monastic settlement at Holy Island. There are several parks and walking routes, and a children's playground. There is also horse-riding, music and great pubs and restaurants. There is a great fishing service with fully equipped boats - and the area is renowned for pike fishing (Sept- March).
