About this property

Great Moose Lake Cottage in a Secluded Cove,Gradual Sandy Beach, fishing,Sunsets

Very Bright, clean and cozy private lakefront Maine Cottage sitting right at the water's edge on a wrap-around point in a secluded, sunny cove of 3500 + acre, peacefull Great Moose Lake (Hartland, Maine). Fully-equipped, modern kitchen, comfortably sleeps 4-5, 2.5-acre property with 365 feet of beautiful, private, birch, pine, and spruce-lined, western and southerly-facing shoreline, with a sunny shallow sandy beach on a sheltered, quiet cove, and up-close, panoramic views of the lake. Great Moose Lake is quiet and not developed like the Belgrade Lakes Region or Sebago Lakes area of southwestern Maine. You may see a few fishing boats drift by on the weekends, but during the week you may feel as if you have the lake to yourself. Most of the cottage interior is finished in knotty pine or wood paneling and carpeted.

Just over 3 hours north of Boston, MA, an hour from Augusta and Bangor (major airport), and approximately 20 minutes off the Maine Turnpike/Route 95 exit 150 (Pittsfield/Hartland), this cottage is easy to access via a private road.

This private cottage is very close to the waters edge, sits on 2.5 level wooded acres and is ideal for families, including Grandma and Grandpa along for the memories! It has everything you need to unwind, recharge your batteries and get away from it all.

The western and southerly-facing shoreline wraps around a point into a peaceful, small cove idea for swimming, with lots of sun on the beach, deck, or in the hammock, with beautiful views and sunsets off the front deck or by the camp fire pit while roasting S'mores and listening to the loons. The sandy beach is gradual and shallow enough for wading and for supervised children to enjoy, yet further out, the protected cove is plenty deep for swimming or a boat. The sheltered cove warms up faster than the open water of the main lake.

The cottage and shore front have awesome views of the lake. Four large sliding glass doors wrap around the front and side of the cottage flooding the kitchen, dining and main living areas with sunlight and panoramic views of the lake and its central islands.

The kitchen is fully equipped with all cooking and eating utensils, refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, electric can opener, electric stove, microwave, etc. for your home-cooked meals. The kitchen window over the sink looks out over the beach and cove.

The dining area just across the kitchen breakfast bar is surrounded by the sliding glass doors and has a country-style wooden table with seating for six.

The dining and main living areas have an open-beamed cathedral ceiling with a remote controlled ceiling fan and overhead dimmable lights, sofa, rocking chair, an overstuffed comfy chair for enjoying a favorite book, smart TV, DVD player, and a wood stove for ambiance or taking the edge off any cool early or late-season nights. The cottage has a telephone landline for local calls. Your complete comfort and relaxation is assured.

WE now have high-speed Wi-Fi.

The first bedroom has a new comfortable double bed with a large picture window looking out over the cove, dresser, rustic night stands and an alarm clock. The second bedroom has a bunk bed, night stand, dresser, and a window looking out towards the woods behind the cottage. There is a sofa bed in the main living room that can sleep1 more person. Both bedrooms have a dresser, oscillating fan, nightstand(s) with lamp(s), a closet, comforters and extra blankets to stay cozy on cool nights. All pillow covers, and mattress covers are new for your comfort. The bathroom has another window facing the woods, the usual sink and toilet, a 3'X4' roomy shower with heated exhaust fan, and a storage closet. The cottage has a full-sized electric water heater to ensure plenty of hot water. The cottage interior is 700 square feet in size with plenty of space as you can see from the pictures. Four Adirondack chairs (cushions provided), a small table, and grill await you on the wrap-around deck facing the lake just outside the sliding glass doors.

Great Moose Lake is a mixed cold/warm water fishery, with excellent fishing and is even stocked with brown trout annually. Small and Large-mouth bass, white and yellow perch, and pickerel are also plentiful. Brook trout can be found in the colder tributaries of the lake and in numerous nearby streams and ponds.

If you bring your own canoe, kayak, or boat it can be safely launched, beached and tied up next to the cottage, but good fishing can be had right off the beach and the rocks in front of the cottage without the need for a boat. A public boat launch is just up the road on the lake. For sunning and swimming, the beach faces south into the sun and the cove is relatively shallow, so it tends to warm up quicker than the deeper main body of the lake out front. Great Moose Lake has one of the largest loon populations in the state. They will greet you in the morning and serenade you to sleep at night. If you're lucky, you'll see fuzzy brown loon chicks riding on their parents' backs. Bald Eagles, owls, King Fishers, and Ospreys also nest along the lake and are frequently spotted diving for fish. A beaver frequents the cove and painted turtles sun themselves on the rocks. A Pine Marten lives near the cottage and can sometimes be seen darting by.

Great Moose Lake truly is a tranquil get-away and you probably won't want to spend much time away from the cottage, but there are numerous beautiful destinations available nearby should you desire to take advantage of day trips.

Groceries, a pizza place, a sandwich shop, Wright's General Store, a laundromat, hardware, other services and supplies are just a short drive into the quiet town of Hartland. Larger stores and a greater selection can be found in nearby Pittsfield or Newport. There is a public municipal airport in Pittsfield should you have your own plane and wish to fly in.

Baxter State Park, Acadia National Park, and the charming historic coastal towns of Belfast, Camden, Rockland, Searsport, Eastport, and Lubec all make for excellent day trips. Other nearby activities available in the area include: quaint restaurants; several golf courses; a microbrewery right on the lake; shopping; wilderness, hunting and fishing guide services; early-season white water rafting; hiking; exploring; camping; wildlife photography opportunities, etc. As far as outdoor activities are concerned, you name it and you can find it, but you may find that the peacefulness and serenity of the cottage and lake are all you need.

Peaceful Maine retreat
Cottage was very homey, owner thought of everything we could possibly need. Husband and 16yo were happy kayaking and fishing, 14yo was happy hanging out in the cove with me. Very nice location, beautiful sunsets, great weather and we always had a nice breeze from the lake. Perfect place to relax and unplug.

I earned a degree in wildlife biology from the University of Maine at Orono in the 1980s, explored around the state and made some life-long friendships. I had to move back home to the Pennsylvania area after college where I still live most of the year. I worked in the environmental firld for 34 years. I have always enjoyed the out doors. I particularly enjoy golfing, hiking, skiing, fishing, canoeing, and just plain being outside. New England and Maine in particular have always been some of my favorite year-round destinations. The times I've spent on the lakes of Maine with my siblings, parents, children, extended family and friends are some of my best memories. 'Down time' off the grid, in the woods, at the lake is priceless and helps me keep things in perspective. The most important things in my life are health, happiness, friends, a good spiritual life, and my grown children whom I never get to spend enough time with.

Why they chose this property

I imagined having a lakefront get-away ever since our family summer vacations on Thompson Lake near Otisfield, ME in the late 1970s and 80s. After searching throughout New England for years, I was drawn back to Maine for several reasons, namely it's unique character, the people, solitude, old friends, and a persistent longing to get back to The North Woods. While in college in the 1970s I spent some time (in the dead of winter) on Great Moose Lake with a friend who owns property on the eastern shore. After a lot of looking and research, I decided to take a closer look here and I found this cottage on the southern shore of the lake and everything fell into place. The location had me from first sight. My family, friends and I spend as much time as possible at the cottage.
Great Moose Lake is remote enough to provide the tranquility I look for, yet it's easy to get to and I am close enough to old friends that I can always get out to see them or have them come visit. The cottage has enough room for a few visitors. It is also within a day trip to Baxter State Park for camping and hiking, the Maine Coast for sight-seeing, shopping and dining, or the western mountains for more hiking or canoeing.. Maine is a different place and a road less traveled, and there are lots of year-round things to do here....or you can just do nothing in this beautiful place.

What makes this property unique

The large amount of waterfront, the southwestern exposure, the nice little beach, secluded cove and the cottage's closness to the water are what make this property unique. The lake is not overly developed like many other Maine lakes. The previous owners had it for almost 30 years. I enjoy working on the cottage and property to make it better for everyone, paddling and fishing around the lake's coves and islands, and having friends, family visit this special place. It's a good place to recharge my batteries here and get away from the rat race. Sometimes it takes a day or two to get used to the solitude at the cottage and then it can be difficuIt to leave after some time there. The cottage is comfortable with modern conveniences and you won't be "roughing it" while staying here. I find the lake and the call of the loons soothing. Sharing this beautiful place with other families brings smiles to everyone. I think you will enjoy it.
