Photos and Description of this Woolwine holiday house

House, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

A perfect getaway in beautiful Meadows of Dan, Virginia. The 4000 square feet home features 3 large bedrooms with privacy, one king, one queen and two doubles, each with full private bath and tub, as well as door to the deck. It's just like having three master bedrooms. Need even more room. Combine which is next door. It adds a two bedrooms and two bath cottage with similar long range views, two decks, chef designed kitchen, radiant floor heat and other amenities.

The 1400 square feet great room has gas fireplace and huge windows to enjoy the 75 mile views from it's ridge location. Full kitchen features new refrigerator, Jenn-Air stove, coffee maker, dishwasher and microwave. You can play CD's and DVD's on the Bose 3.2.1 entertainment system.

House is located near North Carolina - Virginia border about 4 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. For those interested in wine and viticulture, Chateau Morrisette, Virginia's largest winery, and Villa Appalachia are within five miles of the property. Chateau Morrisette features musical festival throughout the summer, as well as free Sunday concerts on the grounds. No trip would be complete without a Friday night in Floyd. The Country Store is alive with flat footing and bluegrass bands form in the alleys and on corners. It is a must see.

Experience nature's gradeur from the expansive deck with it's long views. Spring is showy with Mountain Laurel and Rhododendron, summer abounds with the flowery garden and aviary acrobatics and fall is spectacular as color drifts down the mountains side.

Get out in nature with easy walks from the Parkway like Smart View or stroll down the well worn path beside in Rock Castle Gorge. An exhilarating hike to Buffalo Mountain (once owned by the Robet E. and Harry Lighthorse Lee's family) can be made on a well graded trail leading to the almost 4000 foot peak and expansive 360 degree view.

Visit Fairy Stone Lake and experience the only place to find the mystical Fairy Stone or sink your hook in the Keibler Valley for mountain trout. Bike the Virginia Creeper Trail, Galax Trail or Blue Ridge Parkway. Raft the Dan River and experience the Zip Line nearby. This area has it all.

Golfers, take a swing at Primland's Highland Course rated by Golf Digest as the best new public course in 2006. Add Olde Mills Golf Resort and Great Oaks in Floyd, all within 15 miles of the house.

About Bill Day

We're a North Carolina guy and a Kentucky girl who lives in Florida and has a beautiful home in Virginia. And yes, I have done the impossible and converted a Kentucky girl to a Tar Heel basketball fan.

Bill Day purchased this house in 2005

Why Bill Day chose Blue Ridge Highlands

While dating, we visited a Christmas Tree farm in Meadows of Dan and loved it. We decided to get married there and in looking for a minister, we also looked for land. We wanted long range views and finally found a lot in Edgeview Estates just off Belcher Mountain Road.

In 2005, I was hating my job and decided to try one more backpacking trip. Went to the Smokies and came out with a couple of days left on my vacation. I decided to go up to our lot and take a sunrise picture that I could put in my office to keep my spirits up. I drove in early one morning and set up the tripod and waited for the sun. It was okay, but not a trophy shot. Packed everything up and headed back up Belcher mountain. Between my comings and goings, someone had put a for sale sign in front of Laurel Point.

I met the owners at the house and it was a glorious day. I think I could see Canada. I was known as a fierce negotiator but I was putty in their hands. I knew I had to have that house. They came down a little and I offered them my sweaty handshake. It takes nerves to buy a house without your new bride having seen it. Obviously all is well that ends well.

We decided that the worst thing we could do with the house is just let it sit there. We're 11 hours away and are lucky to visit 2 or 3 times a year. So far we have had excellent guests and feel good about sharing our house.

Hope you come and visit. It's beautiful during the spring, cool in the summer and spectacular in the fall. Notice I didn't mention winter. A little too cool for this Tar Heel converted Floridian.

What makes this house unique

Backpacked for over 30 years and the view from the deck is in my top five favorites in the Southern Appalachians .

Guestbook comments from the owner

From Guest Book: Bill and Mary, your dream house is fantastic. The place has

wonderful amenities and rooms that are so spacious and sereene - and so

comfortable. We loved the deck and the spectacular view. I'd come back any

time of year knowing it would be beautiful. We did the local sites. "Oddfellas"

on a Friday night is a must. Thanks so much. We hope to return. (I shall

return). P.S. When I first got here I slept dreaming the usual mixed-up, lost,

frenetic dreams. After a few serene days and nights I dreamt sweet, happy

Incredible view and peaceful serenity!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at Laurel Point for many years in a row. It's a wonderful location for us to meet up with close friends and enjoy time together. The house is spacious with room for our families with children. We spend hours in the kitchen preparing meals for each other, sampling local wines, and enjoying the view from the deck. We have visited the house in the winter for New Years and late summer. The view is just as stunning in the winter! If you go in mid-winter, a four wheel or all-wheel vehicle is handy just in case there is any winter weather on the country roads. Or extend your stay until the roads thaw and enjoy the house! There are great hikes close to the house for all seasons. On each visit we have found something new in the area. We are continually surprised to find new and exciting places to explore. The kids love spending most of their time outdoors on hikes or watching the butterflies in the garden at the house. We always visit the Floyd Country Store to hear the local music and talk with the locals. Laurel Point is a peaceful retreat into the country and the perfect setting for our reunions with friends and family.

Winery Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Before we arrived, I was convinced the view would be nice, but I thought the pictures were probably exceptional days or a great angle...I was wrong. It really does just look that beautiful. Honestly, it's better in person. Huge house with a great layout. Nice to not need to bring linens/towels. Close to Chateau Morisette and Villa Appalaccia winery (both great!). I can't recommend tubing on the river ("on the water" Floyd) relaxing! Great house, great location, great views, great owner!

My only warnings: being urban dwellers the late night friends (giant bugs) outside at night freaked me out. During the day the hummingbirds made up for it though. I had to adjust to "nature" :)

Also, use the tiny Apple remote for Apple TV or bring DVDs if you like tv in the evening!

A beautiful house

  • 5 of 5

The house is older than I thought it would be but wears the age well and is very comfortable. I could live there and I'm fussy :)

There is plenty of open space so that many people can be there and not feel crowded. My husband and I were there with our son and his wife and their three year old daughter. She LOVED having her own room and running the full length of the house. The acoustics in this house are good, one house we rented was pretty but you could hear every step any one took in any part of the house. Not good.

What they say is true, buy your food before you get there because you WON'T want to leave. The view is amazing - very peaceful.

Yes we would go back and would recommend it to our friends.

What a Marvelous Vacation

  • 5 of 5

It's been a great opportunity to stay at this vacation rental. We as a family have enjoyed every minute of our stay. The location, the house facilities, and the views were fantastic. I was amazed with the great care taken by the owner of the property to maintain the house in order to keep it neat and attractive and to have it a comfortable place to stay. The rooms, the kitchen, the bathrooms as well as other facilities were all well maintained. Moreover, we were totally not bothered with insects inside the house. It's really a five star facility in the area. Definitely we will stay at this property in the future. Many thanks and good wishes from my family.

Primland without the price tag

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented Laurel Point Cottage while attending a wedding nearby. We absolutely loved our stay!! The view did not disappoint--it really takes your breath away. The cottage is well organized, comfortable, and beautifully appointed. This was also a belated 30th anniversary getaway, and I honestly felt that we had all of the advantages of Primland without the hefty price tag.

Bill Day was a fantastic host--providing tons of helpful suggestions and directions. Five minutes after we got to the cottage, he called to make sure we had found our way there and to make sure that we didn't have any questions. The setting is quite private, and yet we felt welcomed and at ease in our surroundings.

We had planned to meet some friends our first evening for dinner in nearby Floyd and then do our grocery shopping at the Food Lion before returning to Laurel Point. In hindsight, this worked out quite well as we could better size up what we needed after first getting to the cottage. Bill is not kidding either--once we saw the view, we struggled to leave to attend the wedding events throughout the weekend--so we stocked up on food and wine at the Food Lion so that we wouldn't have to leave unless absolutely necessary.

In June, the sun rises very early, and since the cottage is oriented to the east, be prepared to greet the day unless you close the bedrooom curtains and door or the wonderful light will come flooding in. Also, we found that towards dusk, the deck got a little buggy. This doesn't have to be an issue as the screened doors and windows that extend completely across the front do not obscure your view of the fading light and emerging stars.

One unexpected surprise was the nice landscaping around the cottage with numerous recently planted annuals. My husband loves plants, and he was fascinated with trying to figure out what was what. Our only regret was that we were not there when the rhododendrons were in bloom!!

I would love to visit again. I will never forget our stay at Laurel Point Cottage!!

The glorious view is a glimpse of Heaven!

  • 5 of 5

We want to thank Bill and Mary Day for sharing the hidden treasures of Laurel Point Villa & Cottage!

First, our experience with the View...

We were looking for a place for our daughter to have a small, romantic, & intimate wedding with God's glorious creation as the back drop when we came across the Day's treasure online. The first picture we saw was exactly what we were looking for! Soon after, our daughter visited the Day's at Laurel Point and immediately called me to say that as wonderful & beautiful as the picture of the view we saw online was, it could not convey the breathtaking experience of actually seeing it from the villa and cottage. I honestly thought to myself, "She's just excited. It can't be that beautiful." Well...when my wife and I finally arrived at Laurel Point and drove along the colorfully manicured driveway, we walked into the living area of the villa and looked through those huge windows at the mountains and valleys below, I can honestly say it made both of us somewhat gasp! It was incredibly humbling to see!

Second, our experience with the Villa & Cottage...

Both are tastefully decorated and practically designed. We stayed in the Villa. Each bedroom faced the View, had a full private bathroom, and had fantastic full-view storm doors leading to the deck. We used the office as a bedroom with a blow-up mattress. It was perfect for our entire family to stay in! Our daughter was married under the pergola at the center of the deck. We used the HUGE living area with HUGE windows as our reception area. Our daughter stayed in the rustically modern Cottage with her bridesmaids and had the time of their lives! Both places had new appliances, every thing worked perfectly and whatever we forgot to bring, Bill and Mary thought to provide. Though aesthetically different, both places were woven together with an elegance that impresses!

Last, but far from least, our experience with Bill and Mary Day...

We had never used VRBO before. It just seemed like it would be more about business than relationship. Man...Bill and Mary bury that concept under tons of great communication and genuine friendliness! They made us feel like we've known them forever. Everyone knows weddings can be very stressful times and scheduling THE PERFECT INTIMATE PLACE FOR A PERFECT INTIMATE WEDDING is almost impossible, but the Day's selflessly and sacrificially made it happen for our family at Laurel Point! For that, we will be forever THANKFUL!
