About This Listing

Transport yourself to the 17th Century as you watch the fishermen cast their nets from their canoes by the Dutch Fort, and imagine how it would have been for the Dutch administrators who lived in this house.

The Space

We love this house and think of it as our home when we're in Batti. Built by the administrators of the 17th century Dutch Fort, it has conserved that old atmosphere almost perfectly ever since. If you squint your eyes and look through one the the iron-barred windows, you'll see what we mean. Like going back in time.

It's for the huge verandah that this house should be known. it's arguably the best in town. the fishermen cast their nets from their canoes by the old Dutch Fort across the water. Legend goes that this is where the Singing Fish can be heard, a phenomenon that was recorded on tape in the fifties, but then the tapes were lost under mysterious circumstances...

Interaction with Guests

It is Mr. Ranjan who runs this home. He lives next to the house, together with the cook. Both have always been very welcoming to us and were sure they will take good care of you too, despite their limited English proficiency. They are happy make you home-cooked dishes, whether its for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We recommend their ladyfinger curry and freshly made lemon juice!

The Neighborhood

Travelling to Lagoon town Batticaloa, or 'Batti' as the locals call it, on the undiscovered east coast is like travelling back in time. Batticaloa's distant and more recent history have been tumultuous to say the least. Batti's been inhabited for thousands of years they say, but back in the 17th century the Portuguese came, then got kicked out by the Dutch, who, in turn, got booted by the English, but not before leaving Batticaloa with it's sturdy old Fort and the old colonial house you're going to stay in. More recently, Batticaloa was a Tamil Tiger stronghold, a dramatic situation that ended in 2009, after which an era of recovery started for Batti.

It's really a special place to roam about in and we love coming here for the combination of culture, natural beauty and the people.
