Not ready for renters
Very basic accommodation that is still not ready for renters; has the feel of a heavily-used but not very clean hostel. If your expectations are at the level of a hostel, and if you do or did smoke, you’ll probably be OK (though smoking is not allowed).
We were seriously disappointed and in fact unable to use the house for our group – primarily because it had been used by smokers and had not been remediated or aired out; subsequent airing after arrival helped a little but not enough.
The owner did not offer any compensation for significant loss of use. Be warned.
Posted pictures are outdated; the house is not in the condition represented, furnishings are not the same, heater has been replaced by a wood stove with a trip-hazard raised-curb tile apron (the smoke smell was not from the wood stove). Furnishings in the living room were sparse - minimal for seven people (number of beds), and consisted of a twin couch and a rocking chair, plus a dining table and chairs. Windows are dirty, doors grimy, shades tattered.
The family of six who had planned to stay in the larger room announced immediately that they were sensitive to the smoke smell and could not use it, it would make them sick. We scrambled for an alternative, assigning other guests from our group to this room, but they too could not use it and had to room elsewhere. The third group tried one night and lost sleep due to reactions to the smell. Obviously, this situation was embarrassing for us and seriously impacted our family reunion accommodation plans. Ultimately one couple toughed it out in the queen bedroom, and we (the organizing couple) moved over to the multiple-bed room and gave our guests our room in the other rental.
The deck is very dirty and mossy and needs power washing; such regular maintenance of this north-facing deck and the lichen-covered house siding would be good for the renters and the house. There was only one old deck chair.
With some careful cleaning, replacements and furnishing and a fresh coat of paint, this house could be brought into a more pleasant condition for rent. Having one person responsible for cleaning and turning around this and the much larger Maranatha 1 house, in 5 hours on a Saturday, is not enough. Investment of paid time and significant effort could make a big difference, as well as enforcement of the ban on smoking. Failing that, damage deposit funds should actually be used to pay for remediating the damage, rather than ignoring or masking it.
Great view and that is all that was great.
First of all we never actually stayed in this cottage, because when we arrived and peaked in the windows the place was filthy. There were prescription drugs on the kitchen table, dog food spilled all over the kitchen. The outside was very run down the yard was unkept. I had a difficult time getting ahold of the owner, and when I did talk to home I could hardly understand him. To be fair he was in intensive care in the hospital, but reading the past reviews of both of his cottages you can see our incident wasn’t an isolated event.
He thought we were not coming until the next day, I was beginning to panic that we were on vacation and going to have no place to stay. At first he told me he would
Have the housekeeper there and have it ready by 4pm, which was only an hour from the time I called him. He ended up putting us up in the cottage in front. Which I’m so glad he did, but I wanted to cry every time I talked to him because I could hardly understand a word he said. I’m assuming whatever he was in the hospital for they had him on a drug that impaired his speech.
This place he ended up putting us in was also not clean, we had to sweep, vacuum, scrub the tub, toilets and sinks and change the sheets, no toilet paper was provided so we had to go out and get some. I was slightly grossed out the whole time we were there because of it. The place has great potential but needs basic upkeep. The sheets were stained, the towels mismatched, thin and frayed. The blinds were almost all broken in the bedrooms. The lawn was unmowed. There was a dead mouse in the middle of the kitchen when we arrived. We had to hang a blanket over the window in our room for privacy. On the plus side, the place is big and right on the water, the deck is a great place to sit and relax looking out on the ocean. The tv does work, other reviews said it didn’t. The WiFi also worked great for us.
Mr. Jasko needs a new housekeeper and this place would be so much better. The other house we were supposed to rent was directly behind this place and we never saw her come and clean it.
House of Horror
Not at all what I expected. The house is falling apart. We were forced to stay because we couldn't go anywhere else and this was the only vacation my son-in-law had. We never found the canoe or kyak that was to be available. You have to bring your own towels there are none available at the house. All in all, look for another place to stay. The are is nice and we enjoyed the area but we had to come back at some point.
First of all this is basic accommodations. It’s clean, well stocked and very close to the water! But it doesn’t have TV or a washing machine. We knew this when we rented, so it wasn’t a big deal. There was excellent WiFi service. If you are expecting the Ritz, don’t rent this place, but if you want basic accommodations this is the place for you!
The house was dirty. No cleaning between the renters. And a large box with a wood burning stove was parked in the middle of the living room area. House needs a good cleaning.
It is close to the water with nice view from the kitchen window and front porch.
Maine is great this time of year. Not too busy. The house was a little unkempt but was comfortable. Nice fire pit for the late evening S'mores. Had a great time.
