About the property

Beautifully Renovated Classic VT Lake View Cottage With Shared Sandy Beach

Centrally located in the heart of Vermont's beautiful Northeast Kingdom, The Honeymoon Cottage is the ideal place for family vacations, honeymoons, hiking/kayaking/biking adventures, fishing trips and more!

The Honeymoon Cottage was built in 1930 as part of a resort along the lines of the Patrick Swayze Dirty Dancing movie, in which people from away would rent a cottage with access to a mess hall, roller rink, tennis courts and of course the beach.

Vestiges of that remain with the kind of privacy, views and open space that you would expect. There are only a handful of cottages left and ours is the very last one with the very best view at the end of a quiet dirt road. Named The Honeymoon Cottage because of it's doll house look, diminutive size and complete privacy, this is a classic Vermont seasonal cottage completely renovated in 2016. It has been outfitted with modern conveniences without losing the country charm that relaxes you the moment you step in the door.

The Honeymoon Cottage has one bedroom with a queen size bed and a small bunk room with built in bunk beds and french doors leading to a brand new deck with panoramic views overlooking the lake and mountains. There is one bath with a walk in shower. It can sleep 2-3 adults and 1-2 children comfortably.

Sitting on top of a knoll which overlooks the lake to the famous Willoughby Gap and mountains, this comfy cottage rests at the end of a short dead-end dirt road so it received ZERO through traffic. With all the amenities needed to make it the perfect seasonal getaway for family and friends, why stay anywhere else in Vermont!

The Honeymoon Cottage has a cozy dining table with umbrella on the deck with great morning views perfect for enjoying a quick breakfast before you head down to the sandy beach to the lake for swimming, fishing or boating. We keep our canoe at the beach and you are welcome to use it -- or bring your own boat as the public fishing access is only a mile away with free parking. There's also ample seating around the firepit - the perfect place for a sunset bonfire.

The fishing access with boat launch is just minutes down the road and there are two large public beaches in addition to our small private one. There are several small country stores where you can stock up on fishing supplies, beach gear or just stop for a pizza, soft serve ice cream or deli sandwich and a bar and restaurant nearby. You do not have to drive into town!

About Tim Marschke and Cheryl Potter Marschke

Cheryl Potter is a fiber artist and author, but is best known as the founder of Cherry Tree Hill Yarn. She has a BA from Middlebury College and an MFA from the University of Arizona.

After earning her Master of Fine Arts degree, Cheryl began dyeing yarn and designing garments an old milk house on her farm on Cherry Tree Hill in East Montpelier, Vermont. Cheryl and her husband Tim currently spend their time between Barton, Vermont and Prescott, Arizona.

Why Tim Marschke and Cheryl Potter Marschke chose Westmore

This property was an irresistible purchase -- a small neglected guesthouse with beautiful bones that needed to either be torn down or a complete restoration. It is located in an ideal location with views hardly ever available for purchase these days and we just had to buy it even though we knew it would take a year before anyone could stay there. We knew that when completed this cottage would be the perfect place for a relaxing honeymoon or a retreat to nature. We have a resident fox and ground hog and have even seen deer in our backyard!

What makes this cottage unique

Guests who stay at The Honeymoon Cottage are able to see the beauty of the Northeast Kingdom in it's entirety while enjoying peacefulness and privacy.

A Mixed Bag

  • 2 of 5

My wife and I went here for our honeymoon. The property is in a lovely area with a view of the lake and is quaint. The renovated cottage is cozy, though there was no Keurig machine as advertised and the couch has sharp corners I kept banging into. The biggest problem we had was with the porch furniture, which wasn't suited to the gusty mountain breezes. The umbrella flew away and broke and the tiled table blew over, shattering the tiles. We had no idea the wind would be this severe since we're from out of state and the owners didn't instruct us to take in the furniture, so we assumed it would hold up. When we informed them about the umbrella, we agreed to replace it as a show of good faith, but they refused to refund our deposit, saying we trashed their patio furniture. We had already told them about the wind and replaced the umbrella so we found this insulting and opened a case with Home Away to get our refund back. The owners finally agreed to refund us but never apologized for not trusting our word and being so accusatory and insulting. We would stay in this area again but not rent with these owners.

Owner's Response: Honeymoon Mishaps We enjoyed these guests and are sorry they did not care for our coffeemaker or couch. We replaced the Keurig due to complaints from people who could not find K Cups in the area and the couch is part of a matching set that everyone else seems to like. This couple came at the end of the season and did not have enough sense to put the patio umbrella down during a storm. They told us there was "some damage" not that tiles in the entire table were smashed and that our umbrella ended up on the roof. Obviously, they are not from around here. Nevertheless we had to replace the table at a cost of $400 as the tiles are a special size which could not be retro fitted. Never in the 3 years that the table has been on our deck has it been pushed over and the umbrella ended up on the roof!

Cozy Cottage Perfect for a Weekend Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

This cozy cottage in Westmore was perfect for a long weekend but we could have used a few more days! The gas fireplace and fire pit was perfect for the chilly almost-fall evenings (low 40's). Although this cottage does not sit on the waterfront, it was nice to be a bit away from 5a and still have access to the water along the small beach and access to the canoe so that we could paddle with the loons on the crystal clear water. We enjoyed biking at Kingdom Trails (20min), hiking Mt. Pisgah (just up the road), Parker Pizza (20min), Ice Cream in East Burke (20min), Bread and Puppet Theater (25min), a tour of Cabot Creamery (30min) and a paddle board and canoe on the lake (a short stroll down the hill). It was just the right size for our family of three and our furry friend with a bunk to spare.

Cute, Clean, Cozy and Views!

  • 5 of 5

This tiny cottage was at the end of a private lane with a lovely view of the lake, plenty of room for the two of us and our dog!

Completely renovated - but in character with it's age - we loved the wide pine floors with square nails!

The outdoor fire pit was nice to sit near at night, and there's a mowed path down to the beach if you don't want to walk down the road. The deck was almost as big as the cottage and had a pet gate, plus there was a huge front yard.

The owners have thought of just about everything from a gas grill, to kayaks, sand chairs and wifi.

The owner told us he really caught the big fish hanging over the fireplace and the antique oars he found while renovating the cottage. This place has the convenience of home but the feel of yesteryear. We only booked it for a long weekend -- we wish we had stayed a week!

Well equipped, great location

  • 5 of 5

Perfect size for two adults and two kids. We took the canoes and kayaks to the private beach and had a blast. Nearby crystal lake was great for swimming.

We'll be back!

  • 5 of 5

The home is a jewel in a perfect setting. It is very quiet, clean and comfortable. If you use the beach chairs provided, be warned - they are the type that are only about 6 inches off the ground. We hope to return next year.
