Photos and Description of this Carcassonne holiday house

4 bedroom 3.5 bath house with garden, sleeps 9, walk to town & Cité

Beautiful and luxurious stone house in the center of Carcassonne, with 4 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms - perfect for large families or groups of friends.

The traditional 2-story design from the 1860s has been recently updated to offer the best of both worlds. Maison Juliette spans 290 m2 (3000 sq.ft.) of living space. The ground floor includes a newly remodeled kitchen that is fully equipped for gourmet cooking, a dining room that seats 10, two living rooms, plus a half bath. The upper floor includes 4 bedrooms with fireplaces and 3 full bathrooms. Three of four bedrooms can have either single or queen beds. The house sleeps 9 people, with a flexible mix of single and double beds, and no sofabeds.

A freshly landscaped garden offers a beautiful oasis where you can enjoy the outdoors in privacy. The summer kitchen and garden dining area provide a casual and comfortable setting for enjoying meals outdoors.

The Cité is a 1km walk to the east, and the commercial centre of Carcassonne is a 500m walk to the west. Experience a different kind of holiday - luxury in the center of a lively city, an easy walk to everything.

Carcassonne area golf & ski: Carcassonne is ideally located in southwest France, only 45 min. from the Mediterranean beaches, an hour and a half from the Pyrenees ski resorts, and an easy 3-hr drive to Barcelona, Spain.

Most of the ski resorts of the Eastern Pyrenees are easily accessible from Carcassonne: Font Romeu, Les Angles, Andorra and Ax-les-Thermes.

Situated close to the medieval town, the Carcassonne Golf Club well deserves its reputation as a course of international standard. The 18 hole course totals 5800 meters (6280 yds), with a par of 71, and is open all year round.

Carcassonne water sports, cycling and motorcycling: The Aude River, only 100m from Maison Juliette, offers great kayaking. Several companies offer white water rafting and canoeing trips.

Lac de la Cavayère is a small recreational lake just 6km from Maison Juliette. With its sandy beaches, lifeguard-protected swimming areas, fishing, picnic areas, grass walking paths, this lake is a true haven of peace, freshness and delight.

Carcassonne is a wonderful area for bicycling. In fact, many world-class cyclists have chosen to make their home in the area between Carcassonne and Barcelona. Two of the owners of Maison Juliette are cyclists, so please contact us for suggestions on cycling routes in the area.

If you prefer two-wheeled touring with an engine, there are many wonderful motorcycling roads in the area. Three of four owners are also motorcyclists, so we'll be glad to offer you our route maps.

Local events and festivals: Every year, Carcassonne hosts several major festivals - Jazz Week in April, the Festival of Music in June, Festival of the Cité in July, fabulous fireworks on Bastille Day (July 14), Spanish Week in August, Nautical Jousting in September, and a Christmas Festival in December.

About Sue Gordon & Jeannine Gauthier

Maison Juliette is owned by two California couples: Eric and Jeannine and their good friends, Ian and Sue. Eric grew up in Paris and always dreamed of owning a second home in the south of France. His wife Jeannine was easily convinced of the wisdom of this idea :-), and their enthusiasm soon infected their close friends, Sue & Ian.

Sue Gordon & Jeannine Gauthier purchased this house in 2008

Why Sue Gordon & Jeannine Gauthier chose Carcassonne area

We wanted a vacation home in the center of a small city - walking distance shops, restaurants and tourist sights - so we could relax and experience the European pedestrian-centered lifestyle, and our teenagers could be independent but still safe. Carcassonne is friendly city with about 50,000 residents. The Cite is the largest restored castle in all of Europe, attracting three million visitors each year. Carcassonne is far enough south that the weather is temperate all year. The beach is only a 45-minute drive away - unless you count the lake, which the locals call 'Carcassonne Beach' :-).

What makes this house unique

Walk to everywhere! And if you really want a rental car, there's plenty of free on-street parking directly in front of the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Coming to France for our 20th wedding anniversary was an excellent idea! Brought our 3 girls and were joined by brother and sister for part of the week. Enjoyed lots of things in Carcassonne: La Cité [day & night] O2 Adventure [3 hours of fun & challenge - ropes, zip lines, log walking - WOW!], day trip to Barcelona [3 hr drive], castle tour at La Cité, cooking class at 42 rue Victor Hugo with Peter Woodcock, eating & drinking [Restaurant St. Jean in La Cité, Adalaide next to St. Jean, Jardin en Ville, Chateau de Pennautier, Epi dOvalie pastries, La Mine Celine sandwiches, La Magnac restaurant], cute womens clothes at Chatteak near Place Carnot. Thanks, Eric, for letting us know about your Maison!

An absolute gem in the South of France

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for a delightful house in the beautiful South of France, go to Maison Juliette in Carcassonne.

Maison Juliette looked great online and we found it to be even better than we expected. It is a house of grand proportions, fitted out with everything that you need for a comfortable and luxurious holiday. We spent 3 glorious weeks there with our family - 3 generations including a 2 year old -and everyone was able to enjoy the stay. The upstairs bedrooms were easily insulated from the chatter of the delightful but early rising toddler who had plenty of space to play.

Carcassonne is a wonderful and interesting city in itself and Maison Juliette is perfectly placed to explore the new city and the old city and its citadel on foot.

It is also very easy to travel by car from Maison Juliette to the fabulous medieval towns, Cathar castles and beautiful beaches within 1 - 2 hours drive from Carcassonne. We loved: Minerve, Montolieu, Albi, Limoux, Colioure - and many others.

If you're a "foodie", you can access the many Michelin star restaurants within the area - we did and found that they happily catered for a 2 year old as well. We were also able to cook many great family meals at home in the well equipped Maison Juliette kitchen - we put the cookbook (supplied in the house) to very good use during our 3 week soujourn!

We couldn't recommend Maison Juliette more highly. It was a privilege to stay there. 10 stars!!

Great house, great location

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful old home with a great kitchen, lovely wood floors in the bedrooms and a comfortable and very private backyard/patio.

Excellent location for exploring the downtown, La Cité and the Canal du Midi for cycling, walking or a boat ride. Also the pretty River l'Aude is just a block away.

Move into comfort as well as history and relish every minute. Great value that feels like home!

  • 5 of 5

We used the comfortable kitchen and the outdoor garden spaces the most for eating and chatting, what perfect places to relax and recharge. Food, stores, and sites are within easy walking distance. Parking is ample and free.

We used the house as a. base and drove to Toulouse for a day (great churches and museums), Mirepoix (fabulous market if you go on Monday), Rennes le Chateau (of Da Vinci Code fame), Limoux, Couiza, Alet Les Bains (all quaint and charming), and to Collioure on the Mediterranean . Some of our group rented bicycles and rode on the lovely path beside the famous Canal du Midi. There is lots to do, and it's a great base location.

But let's not forget La Cite, the fortified city of the Cathars! What a lovely place it is for a day of feeling Medieval! This UNESCO World Heritage site is well worth a visit. There are tons of tourists and loads of souvenir shops. Staying right in La Cite is probably a drag - it's so touristy. That's one reason Maison Juliette is so good - you are away from the souvenir shops and crowds, but can easily walk to La Cite and the downtown Carcassonne area.

A word about rental cars. We took the train from Paris to Carcassonne and arrived too late on Saturday to pick up a car anywhere except the Carcassonne airport. Be sure to reserve your car early and make sure it will be at the airport when you arrive. We got "upgraded" to a bigger car and had trouble with it being too wide for the narrow streets in all the places we went.

Maison Juliette is maintained beautifully by a couple who speaks English. They were warm, welcoming and helpful.

The owner promptly answered all our questions before we arrived so we could make good plans.

We highly recommend this property!

A Wonderful Wine Country Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week enjoying the wines of the Languedoc in a beautiful home. Maison Juliette was perfect for our family of five. Old world charm with modern amenities. We were in Carcassonne for its easy access to the wines of Languedoc and the location was ideal. We have been making wine journeys to France over the past five years or so and this was the first time we were in Southwest France. I picked Carcassonne because of its somewhat central location and its proximity to the wines of Limoux, Corbieres and Minervois, among others. The location was very well-suited, and so was the house. In the past, we have stayed in somewhat more rural locations but we liked this spot since it provided so much to do and see within easy walking distance. After a day spent visiting a local vigneron, we came back to Maison Juliette and enjoyed a lovely evening out back in the beautiful courtyard with some local cheeses, charcuterie and delicious baguettes (as well as the wonderful local wines!) A beautiful late-summer afternoon at a cafe on the Place Carnot or a lovely moonlit evening at a restaurant in the Cite were all within steps of Maison Juliette. One day we packed a picnic lunch and headed to the Mediterranean beaches for great afternoon by the shore. The beautiful tall-ceilinged rooms downstairs gave us plenty of space; and the large bedrooms and very comfortable beds upstairs provided a welcome end to a busy day. The local wineries were very welcoming and their seriously underpriced wines were outstanding. Our only regret is that we did not have enough time to further explore this captivating region. One week is clearly not enough.

A perfect home for our wine country vacation

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a home base for our exploration of Languedoc wine country for our family and Maison Juliette was perfect. A large home with old world charm and modern amenities, the pictures on the website did not do it justice. The rear courtyard was the perfect location for dinner and wine after a day spent visiting the many nearby vineyards. The large bedrooms upstairs and the very comfortable beds made for peaceful nights after busy days touring a most beautiful part of France. The well-equipped and large kitchen was perfect for cooking. Many wonderful restaurants were within a short walk of Maison Juliette. A boulangerie visit each morning (a few blocks away) for still-warm baguettes and croissants made every breakfast a feast. Sitting outside at a cafe on Place Carnot on a beautiful afternoon with a bottle of local wine was idyllic. One day, with a picnic lunch packed, we drove to the beach for a perfect afternoon at the shore. One week at Maison Juliette was clearly not enough time and we cannot wait to return.

Maison Juliette provided the perfect setting for our family gathering in southern France.

  • 4 of 5

Rental experience and arrangements for Maison Juliette were very easy and seamless. Owners were very responsive and helpful including the provision of a detailed house manual. The house was fully equipped with ample size in all the rooms and a large courtyard.

Maison Juliette was a well situated four bedroom house that made walking to the Medieval Cite or the downtown square and market easy and enjoyable. Maison Juliette is situated on a one way street in the heart of Carcassonne and even with the narrow roads, we encountered no difficulty in parking our rental vehicle within close proximity to the house. All rooms were very spacious with the parlor and library getting considerable use. With all four bedrooms occupied during the majority of our three week stay, we encountered no issues with water pressure or water temperature during the entire time. The washer and dryer were very welcome additions for all family members. The large spacious kitchen had all the necessary kitchen utensils and appliances for accommodating our many family members as was the large dining room for family meals. Although all appliances were in the kitchen, the summer kitchen was a nice addition for seating for late and relaxing morning breakfasts. It was also notable to mention that when a few items needed repair and/or an upgrade, the managers were very accommodating and were able to deliver a new umbrella for the outdoor patio table, an updated iHome system, and a new coffee pot. They were very responsive to questions when needed and spent time introducing all the many facets of the house.

Maison Juliette’s location was excellent for excursions outside the city. It was less than one hour to Port Nouvelle on the Mediterranean, 45 minutes to the historic site of Narbonne and less than 20 minutes to the very impressive wine tour and lunch near Pennautier. We visited Cathar Country Castles to the south and north, a historic paper mill, castles and caves to the north. Within Carcassonne, it was 10 minutes walking to the train station for the nearby Midi Canal excursion and bike rentals for a ½ day bike trip to nearby Trebes for lunch. It was 10 minutes walking also to Place Carnot, the local square that had many activities, including a large and popular Saturday morning market. For other shopping we were less than 10 minutes by vehicle to Geant Casino or the more modern shopping plaza of Carrefour.

Maison Juliette provided an excellent and memorable family vacation.

Car: not necessary

Maison Juliette is situated in the heart of Carcassonne, midway between the medieval walled Cité and the Bastide St. Louis, Carcassonne's commercial center. No car is required - enjoy a different kind of holiday in the centre of a lively city.

• The riverbank, with its beautiful walking paths offering views of the Cité is only 100m from the house.

• Numerous restaurants and bakeries are within a 500m walk. An internet cafe is within 300m; the post office is 400m, and several ATMs are within 500m.

• The Canal du Midi, which runs from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, is also just 500m from Maison Juliette.

• There's a small swimming lake (Lac de la Cavayère) just 6 km, with lifeguard-protected swimming area, picnic tables, volleyball courts and zip lines.

• Most popular ways to get to Carcassonne:

1) Fly into Carcassonne airport on RyanAir (UK's budget airline) from Brussels, London/Stanstead and many other UK cities.

2) Fly into Toulouse and take a 1-hour train to Carcassonne, or simply rent a car and drive. The Carcassonne train station is 700m from the house. If you arrive by train with only a small rolling bag, you can easily walk to the house, or catch one of the taxis that line the street in front of the train station.

3) Fly into Barcelona and take a 3-hr train (or drive) to Carcassonne.

4) Fly into Paris, stay a few days to see that beautiful city, and take the 5-hr TGV (high-speed train) to Carcassonne.

5) Combine strategies 2 and 4 - you can often fly into Paris and out of Toulouse (or vice-versa) for about the same cost as a round-trip. Then just take the TGV one-way to/from Paris.
