Overview

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), cots, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-10

Story is, in keeping with its name, a storybook-like community, nearly hidden by Ponderosa Pines, Hawthorns and greenery in the summer and generally covered in a blanket of snow in winter.

You will enjoy staying in this 1,500 sq. foot re-purposed old Piney Creek General Store and the Waldorf A' Story restrunt. It's been said that we were a 'place with an attitude'...and that attitude is a philosophy of enjoying the quality of life that Story has to offer. We couldn't let the mystique die, so our previous establishment was re-purposed into this lovely guest haus that is available for year round rental.

It has the ambiance of places long ago with worn, rustic floors, rock walls, flagstone dining room floor and a bar built from an extra LARGE Ponderosa beetle killed tree, but with all the modern conveniences. You will also find coffee, homemade bread and wine

You will take great pleasure from the antiques and all the paraphernalia on the walls which will keep you entertained for hours...as well as an abundance of games.

View the sunrise from the most awesome huge rocking chairs produced right here in Story while you rock away the hours on the front porch. Sunsets behind the mountains are just as spectacular. There is a stream on the property with places for you to sit and enjoy your early morning coffee...or mimosas.

You will snuggle into your queen size bed in the bedroom that was formerly the wine room and is decorated as such. Our old beer room contains bunk beds covered with old quilts made by each of our grandmothers. There is also extra sleeping for two on the futon and reclining couch. If needed, cots can be provided.

History of the area is waiting to be explored since we are so close to the Bozeman Trail. You will find Ft. Phil Kearney, The Wagon Box Fight Site and the Fetterman battlefield, all of which experienced a portion of the Indian Wars. Custer's Last Stand is just an hour away.

Wildlife is in abundance. Deer will walk up to you and eat right out of your hand. You might also experience a sighting of moose, elk, antelope, black bear, mink or mountain lions. A few bunny rabbits and robins nests too boot

Hiking and snowshoeing are two ways in which you can obtain exercise and observe the most beautiful wild flowers. Another option is to four wheel up beautiful Thornerider or Penrose Park. Winter time allows for snowmobiling

Hunters and fisherman will love the amount of room and the closeness to several lakes and perfect hunting grounds...as well as the perfect kitchen to cook up the fish that do jump on your line.

Ladies will love it for the various organizations they are involved in like quilting groups and book clubs with ample room to spread out and work on their projects.

Restaurants and a grocery store are within walking distance, as is the Post Office (right next door) so you can mail those postcards back home. The library is located conveniently right across the street for books and DVD's. Our DVD player is also set up to stream from Netflix...even kiddoes movies.

Several events occur year round, but the summer is full of excitement. You will find reenactments of fight scenes and one of the biggest Rodeo's around is held in Sheridan the second week of July every year. This week long celebration holds fun for everyone.

Drop by sometime. You're always invited to be our guest at what was once the Piney Creek General Store...and the Waldorf A'Story...that isn't any more...now it is better. We believe that Wyoming has some of the most beautiful scenery in the US of A...and we know you will agree with us.

Keywords: unique old general store and restrunt turned into a Guest Haus, commercial kitchen, huge dining room, family style. Children must be included in total guest count when using instant quote for accurate rates.

Dick and Patty Hoover are the retired owners of the Piney Creek General Store and the Waldorf A' Story Restrunt. We live next door to the Guest Haus. Relocated here from Dallas, Texas for a slower pace of traffic and life in general.

Patty Hoover purchased this cottage in 1993

Why Patty Hoover chose Big Horn National Forest

We choose Story as a place to live permanently...because we enjoy the beauty and serenity of the place. Not very many people or cars...but still close enough to a big place when you need it.

What makes this cottage unique

The Guest Haus is right on a stream with places to sit and drink your morning coffee. Slow paced, great for relaxing or doing as much as your little heart desires. Large dining room for big families and a great commercial kitchen set up.

Best Time in Wyoming!

  • 5 of 5

As soon as you walk through the doors, you feel a sense of nostalgia as you walk back into time! My friends and I felt right at home as we were preparing for the Bighorn 100 Mile Endurance Run. I can't recommend any where else to stay if you happen to be in the Sheridan/Story area. Patty left us a wonderful loaf of bread :) And we all enjoyed it together! I will be back some day to complete Bighorn and hope to stay here once that day arrives!

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed the environment. We've tried to ensure that no one gets bored while staying at the Waldorf A' Story Guest Haus in Story, WY. Glad you enjoyed the homemade bread and wine. So sorry that the weather was less than spectacular for the 100 (or70) mile run. Hope to see you again soon. Patty Hoover

Owner's Response: Thank you so much. You guys were so great. So enthusiastic and intrigued by what you saw. So glad our place could keep you entertained for hours just looking at everything. The weather was perfect, the creek was running high. Come back and see us sometime. I'm sure there is something you might have missed . Oh yeah and thanks for letting my friends take a tour. They were mightily impressed as well. Patty Hoover

Great host, decaying property

  • 3 of 5

The hosts were great- nice homemade zucchini bread and bottle of wine when we arrived and rapid response when the wifi did not work. The property itself is a funky former deli - restaurant, closed in 2008. Little seems to have changed since then except for some planting outside. The lighting was gloomy. Dishes were clean but all cookware needed to be cleaned prior to use. Not appropriate environment for children. Stuffy. Bathroom was very clean and host supplied ample towels and toiletries.

Owner's Response: One person's trash is another person's treasure! So many of our guests are past shoppers and diners in our general store and restaurant before it was re-purposed into a guest haus and they just love it! There is just so much to see and so many things bring back memories. A lot has changed since the 3,000 square feet of merchandising was turned into this 1,500 square foot abode. The old wine room, with a wine appropriate theme, is now the queen bedroom. The old beer room houses the twin beds that not only kids but grownups (hunters) enjoy as well. The creek and the huge Edith Ann rockers entice both young and old for ample picture taking. So sorry if you thought it was stuffy and gloomy but glad the fans helped. I'm sure the fan on the air conditioner would have worked as well. My husband was always into low lighting, but that is why there are so many lamps in the place so it can be as bright or as subdued as you would like. I am glad, though, that you enjoyed your stay and the ability to watch the eclipse without having to pay an outrageous hotel bill . Will definitely be adding "double check all cookware" to the housekeeping staffs duties. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

You will not be bored......

  • 5 of 5

Staying here was an unexpected experience. We loved the house and all the incredible items within. This house was extremely comfortable, and we spent much time enjoying the décor. Could not have asked for a more fun home. The owner, Patty, was warm and ready to please if any needs appeared. Very well supplied. Thanks again Patty. Vicki and Jim Buehler

Owner's Response: Vicky and Jim so enjoyed visiting with both of y'all. It was so nice to have an engaging couple that has actually experienced ownership of a VRBO and to be able to do a little comparison. You made it very easy to take care of you and I can only hope that you might come through this way again. So happy you enjoyed your stay. It made me smile as well.

No ordinary mountain cabin!

  • 5 of 5

Waldorf A' Story Guest Haus exceeded our expectations. Located in the small town of Story, it is a beautiful area at the foot of the Bighorns. One peek inside and you quickly realize there is something special with this one. You are immediately drawn to the naturally twisted tree trunk that runs from the floor to the ceiling and the bar with tree trunk stools. Plenty of room to relax and entertain exists. Almost every area in the cabin is decorated in some fashion ... each a unique story in and of itself. The basics, and then some, are well covered -- definitely more stocked than many of my previous rentals. And if you did need something, there is an amazing grocery store about 200 yards away that probably carries it. Lastly, the owners are welcoming, thoughtful, and will go out of their way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. Highly recommend!

Owner's Response: Wow what a wonderful review! You guys were the best guests.. So excited and appreciative of everything we had to offer. So happy that your experience was so pleasant. We would certainly love to have you back here anytime. You were also very accommodating to do tasks for me to make my life smoother. Not to mention the loss of power during the snow storm! Thank heavens that doesn't happen very often. You were lucky enough to enjoy the variety of weather this part of the country has to offer. Pleases come back and utilize all that we have to offer. Great place for family get together. Maybe bring "dad" up to Story for his 91st birthday.
