About this property

Peaceful Country Comfort W Panoramic Views of Big Creek Valley

Relax in the comfort of a full-size 2 bedroom, 2 bath luxury 2nd floor apartment with separate entrance for your convenience and privacy. Enjoy the quiet country life with panoramic views of Big Creek Valley from the bay window in your living room, or sip a favorite beverage on the spacious balcony adjoining the King room. Feel free to enjoy our large lawn, take a walk along our woods or enjoy an evening fire in the fire pit.

Our home is situated on the side of a small hill overlooking an active farming area with farmers fields and pastures giving way to rolling wooded hills in the distance. Enjoy a bicycle or motorcycle ride or quiet drive along paved country roads, or relax in the yard or on your balcony with a good book and a favorite beverage.

Wintertime sports activities are nearby with cross country and downhill skiing, tubing and snowboarding at Fort McCoy, cross country at the golf course in Sparta, and downhill at Mount La Crosse. Snowmobile trails abound! You and the kids can enjoy sledding on the mild slope of the hill right behind your apartment, build snowmen in the yard, etc. Try your hand at ice-fishing on Perch Lake or Lake Neshonoc or skating at the Sparta Hockey Rink or one of the outdoor rinks at Memorial Park in Sparta... or just snuggle in and stay warm in the apartment.

The apartment is attached to our home with a separate entrance for your convenience. Sound buffers between our living spaces mean we can't hear you and you can't hear us.

RECLAIMED CHARM
A few years ago a storm blew over an enormous elm tree I climbed as a kid. It landed on the corner of an early 1900's granary. The owner chose not to repair it and allowed us to take it down for the salvaged lumber. You'll find that reclaimed lumber throughout the apartment. Wooden floors were reworked from the granary flooring. Wainscot, trim and wood ceilings were made from the siding. Shelves and benches that adorn the apartment were made from refashioned roofing boards. Table, work station and vanity tops were made from wall studs, beams and boards. Nail holes, knots and blemishes remain visible in the wood giving the finished pieces a unique and beautiful character.

Building our Vacation Rental apartment using reclaimed wood, inspired us to start a "green" business. Used Anew is operated primarily on site. Guests can take a tour of our Show Home & Shoppe, just down the hill, to see many of the products and features we make from reclaimed wood and other materials. As Used Anew, we take apart unwanted buildings in the area, saving what we can of the vintage materials. Then, working with area Amish craftsmen and our own in-house ThingMakers, we produce flooring, accent wall and ceiling options, kitchen cabinets, furniture and decor - all from reclaimed materials!
Along the way, we also accumulate antiques and collectibles, and make these available in the Show Home & Shoppe, as well.
SO, don't forget to ask about Used Anew and request a visit to the Show Home & Shoppe!

An excellent place to stay
Our stay was six weeks long, from July 1st to August 15th, Lu and Larry were great, they even gave us fresh veggies from their garden. The apartment has a wonderful view of the valley, farmland and mountains. Quiet, clean, well-stocked and comfortable. If we could leave a ten-star review, we would. when we return to Sparta, Wisconsin we will stay here again. A perfect vacation!

mini vacation
My sister and I stayed for 3 nights at the property. My parents live close by and so we were able to find this great spot that offers more of a "homey" stay instead of a hotel. Plus--we like to support local businesses more than "big name" businesses. Staying out in the country was very relaxing and we took in a nice walk through the local farmland. Relaxing! The kitchen is nicely stocked with cooking utensils, etc. and we were able to cook up an Easter dinner and take it over to our parents. We would definitely stay again!

Lu and I know that where we stay when we travel can dramatically affect how much we enjoy our entire visit. We've learned that having a comfortable, relaxing (and sometimes romantic) place to call our 'home on the road' is as important as choosing what we'll do with our time. We've designed this space with YOUR comfort and relaxation in mind. Our home is Travel Green Certified. We heat and cool with a geothermal system. We've made our home and your apartment as energy efficient as we can. We also operate a business called 'Used Anew'. Guests can visit our on-site Show Home & Shoppe where we feature multiple ways we repurpose reclaimed materials in every room, AND discover affordable antiques and collectibles throughout. Considering a remodel project back home? You can take your time browsing the Show Home, make selections and have us ship the materials to you!

Why they chose this property

We love the country! It's so peaceful and quiet here in the Big Creek Valley. The views of active farms and majestic wooded hills are spectacular any time of year. We've come home to Wisconsin after more than a decade away. Here on the hillside, overlooking the farm where I grew up, it feels a little like we're on vacation every day! We decided to share this experience with you, and so we've made this luxurious full-size apartment for you to use, for a few days, a week, or longer if you wish.

What makes this property unique

When our neighbors had a tree go down on their granary, we made arrangements to deconstruct the building so we could use the materials when we built the apartment. We remilled the flooring and used the siding to make beadboard for the bedroom ceilings and wainscot in the living room. We made tables, vanity tops and work desk from wall studs. You'll see reclaimed wood throughout the apartment. We love how it turned out (and this project was the catalyst that encouraged us to start Used Anew). The apartment is comfortable and functional and the rural setting yields a slower pace in a quiet space where you can wind down from your busy day. During the growing and harvesting seasons we enjoy watching the farming activities all around us as our neighbors work the fields and harvest their crops. We frequently spot Bald Eagles and other wildlife from our windows or when we're out enjoying the yard. On cloudless nights, you'll enjoy the lack of light pollution. The only lights you'll see for miles will be a few neighbors' yard lights and an occasional passing vehicle on the road. You may not have realized just how many stars are visible in the night sky!
