Photos and Description of this La Porte holiday farmhouse

Charming Civil War Era Farmhouse

If you like antiques and vintage, this is the real thing. A charming getaway with absolute serenity yet access to activities, including the beach.

Squeaky clean.

Used as the location for two feature films.

Full kitchen.

Cozy, homey, peaceful.

85 minutes from the Loop.

Lots of wildlife.

Built during the Civil War and added to several times since, the house has been in our family since 1939. Lots of happiness here, and the echoes of it remain.

Caretaker is nearby if you need him.

Your smart phones will work.

No smoking in house, no cats (allergic).

New central air conditioning, new furnace.

Big working TV & huge library of DVDs.

One bathroom downstairs, two bedrooms upstairs, another bedroom downstairs.

Two full size beds, three singles. Plus a big comfortable couch and a window-seat, so it actually sleeps 8 or 9 if you need it to.

Easy to get to Notre Dame.

Fish the local steel-head streams or the lake. Pick your own fruits and vegetables nearby. Horseback riding, 2 miles; 2.5 miles to Heston Steam Museum.

In the winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. In the summer, charming walks among old apple trees, perhaps in bloom, with morel mushrooms under them if you can find them.

Help yourself anytime from the vegetable and herb garden.

Washer and dryer.

Horseshoes!

Wineries, good restaurants, outlet shopping, and the area is estate auction heaven.

You will be greeted on arrival by caretaker, and then enjoy complete privacy, unless you need him.

Check-is generally at 3PM and check-out at noon. Call if you'd like to make other arrangements.

Eight and a half miles from New Buffalo beach. Twelve miles to LaPorte, twelve to Three Oaks.

Great vacation getaway for all

  • 4 of 5

This property is exactly what it states. It's an updated flashback to rural farm life. John was very responsive pre-arrival and Terry was a great caretaker throughout our time at the home. Terry is available if needed, yet gives you the privacy that you want. What a great place to relax and get away from it all.

Great people to do business with. John has a few properties, we will check out another next summer.

John, the owner is very responsive and really easy to deal with. We felt like we knew Terry, the Inn keeper as soon as we spoke with him. Cozy and rustic as the description says. Really close to Heston Supper Club, Three Oaks and New Buffalo. Felt very welcome there. Will be renting another property from John, as he has a few. Great people, like John and terry make the difference between a good stay and a bad experience.

Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

I had a feeling this place would be a winner but it surpassed my expectations. The spot is rural, quiet, nicely wooded, very pleasant and beautiful in a simple sort of way. The caretaker who let us in and showed us around was very friendly and relaxed, and he offered to bring us firewood on demand and invited us to pick the ripe produce in the garden! Somewhere on the description they claim to have "basically everything you need" in terms of amenities, and that is no exaggeration; there is a conventional coffee maker and a kureg, with filters and coffee into the bargain. Beds were well made and towels hung in the bathroom, and there's a fully stocked linen closet and a variety of bath gel, shampoo, and conditioner in little personal bottles. The house itself certainly is "charming" in the seemingly very well maintained unembellished antique craftsmanship of the building. It's cozy but there's plenty of space, and for our group of 8 who were traveling from various places for a wedding nearby it was highly conducive to spontaneous socializing and coordinating, while never feeling crowded. Owing to the nature of our trip we didn't get a chance to take full advantage of the deep relaxation and plentiful amusements (horseshoe, board games, movies, a great library, a wide open field to frolic in) available to us at this place, but it did suit our needs. We didn't get a great sense of what the immediate area had to offer because the wedding was in Michigan City. The nearby Hesston Diners Club looked very promising, if perhaps a little rich for our budgets (but in a totally non-pretentious kind of way). Dining out doesn't seem all that important here since the kitchen has all you need and is relatively spacious for a cozy little house. I'm pretty sure there are wine tastings and blueberry farms around too, but you can look into that yourself. beaches are 20-30 minutes by car (sorry if we left sand!). I think this house would be an ideal place to spend serious quality time with friends and/or family. It seems to be designed for that in a very thoughtful loving manner. The place is very clean, so much so that i almost wished for more of that old building smell tbh, but the old timey character is preserved in all the places you would reasonably want it, while the caretaker and owners have tended to all the details of modern living.

Neat & Tidy

  • 5 of 5

The Farmhouse is very neat, clean, and set up well for a family or large party of people to enjoy themselves; with a large dining table, plenty of bedrooms, and spacious accommodations, we look forward to staying here again. The one bathroom at first seemed daunting, but with a little communication and coordination there was never a problem. Thank you John (and Terry) for your help and a lovely stay in La Porte!

Superific!

  • 5 of 5

Let me tell you we had an absolutely fantastical overnight stay at the property! Our group of 6 came in for a wedding in Three Oaks, Michigan, and the location made for an easy commute. The house is quaint and has tons of character. The area is serene and peaceful. It's what you'd expect from country livin'.
