About John & Kay Krakoski
Hi I'm John and this is my family; my wife Kay, daughters Jessica, Sarah and son John Michael. Kay and I both grew up in beautiful Sullivan County, left here in 1974 to go to college, and then married and lived across the country as I was working for IBM. We moved back here in 2008, retired in 2011 and now enjoy living once again in the area that we love!
John & Kay Krakoski purchased this House in 2010
Why John & Kay Krakoski chose Dushore
The land this house was built on was part of the original family farm that my mother's ancestors from Germany homesteaded in 1850. Prior to this cute cottage stood a 2 story chicken coop where they raised chickens. When I was a young boy, the chickens were gone but I had lots of fun playing in the 'Coop'. My father passed away in 1975 and my mother was fortunate enough to finish raising the younger children in our family home until 1980, when she sold the entire farm. It changed hands twice before my wife and I were blessed to be able to buy most of the homestead back. This piece of property was part of a 10 acre parcel that was sold and then sub-divided and 2 new homes built. This one we call 'The Retreat', the other and much larger one is called 'The Lodge'. My wife and I re-built the old Homestead across the road. That is where my ancestors built the original 'Homestead' and that is where Mom and then my 6 brothers and sister and I grew up. When we moved back in 2008 we originally were going to renovate the Homestead but instead tore it down and rebuilt in it's similar footprint.(Of course we've added some nice amenities) but it really does remind everyone of the 'Grand Old Lady' that it used to be.
What makes this House unique
As a vacation rental all of our guests have been quite pleased with the accommodations of the Retreat. They remark on the comfort of the home, the peaceful, quiet location, and the beauty of the woods that surround the house as well as it's central location to most activities within the county. You can get away from it all AND still have the convenience of being only 4 miles from Dushore (with grocery stores, a pharmacy and restaurants)! The county is perfect for relaxing and connecting with nature right in your backyard or deck, to go exploring the many state parks and trails, fabulous scenic vista views, or swimming in the spring fed lakes and streams. More recently we have had some local wineries as well as a micro-brewery pop up and they are fun to go visit. Also, since this is part of our homestead you have access to 200 acres for exploring the woods and fields right out your back door.

Loved our stay!
We stayed for a weekend and the property was beautiful. This was one of my favorite that I have visited in Sullivan County. Very clean, easy to find and cozy. We were able to meet Kay while we were there, she was so friendly and welcoming. Looking forward to renting again sometime soon.
Makes for a very comfortable hunting camp.
This place is so clean! You can see even the smallest of stars on a clear night. Didnt know that the owners live across the street but didnt see them. Very light traffic. Only thing is I wish they were small dog friendly but other than that it was an amazing weekend away.... went too fast as always!! Thank you!!
Great Fall Weekend
A very nice and well maintained property not too far from town but remote enough to enjoy the trails and wildlife. The owners are great hosts. Hope to be back next year.
Great Weekend !
We have stayed at a number of really nice, really clean VRBO properties, but none as nice, and clean as this place. What an awesome location, and property. Already planning to stay there again in late November.
Second time at this lovely rental. Beautiful setting and everything you could ask for provided.
Sullivan County is considered the 'Gem' of the Endless Mountains. At over 2,100 ft elevation and densely forested, it is naturally cooled by the mountain air. There are many State Parks and forests to enjoy hiking and swimming. The Loyalsock creek runs thru the heart of the county and provides excellent trout fishing and many swimming holes to cool off during a warm summer day.
