Photos and Description of this Mathias holiday cottage

Note: Cottage Was Listed Previously On Homeaway under a different listing number

Constructed in 2008 and designed by famed Katrina Cottage architect Marianne Cusato, this classic, West Virginia cottage is located in Lost City/Lost River is sure to warm your heart. Brazilian cherry hardwood floors, marble and glass tile baths, 9 foot ceilings and comfortable furniture provide a casual, country/lodge atmosphere. The location provides breathtaking vistas of the mountains from every window, the 8 foot deep front porch which extends the entire house as well and a small covered back porch with even more great views. We recently added a large "treehouse deck" off the driveway for more outdoor space for dining, relaxing and has a large propane gas grill. This vacation home sits down a small driveway from a paved road and is surrounded by acres of nature. .Beyond that and within walking distance are the rest of the thousands of acres that make up the George Washington National Forest. The fenced in back yard is great for dog lovers!

From Washingtonian Magazine - : 'The Lost River Valley of West Virginia has been found.'

'Tucked between two mountain ridges, the valley, a couple of hours from Washington, is drawing more weekenders. The lure is rugged woodland scenery, tumbling mountain streams, and outdoor fun - hiking, fishing, biking, canoeing, swimming, rafting, climbing, horseback riding.' In winter months you are only 40 minutes from Bryce Resort and a little over an hour from Canaan Valley resort!

Three great bedrooms make the home perfect for families or couples - two rooms each with a queen bed and a third room with two twin beds. One queen bedroom is downstairs with its own bath and canopy bed (master suite). All bed linens and towels are provided. There are two full baths, one upstairs and one down. The baths have heated marble floors, glass tile walls and high-end fixtures. Soak in the upstairs bath's jetted tub with a window that overlooks the mountains and catch a glimpse of the deer and wild turkeys. The cottage has both central air and heat which is dual zone for those who like to sleep with it cool but wake up to a warm downstairs.

There is a fully-equipped kitchen with microwave, dishwasher, toaster, coffeemaker, etc.. There is a washer and dryer combo upstairs if you need it.

Newly installed: fiber for internet- super fast, Apple TV for Netflix/Hulu and Verizon repeater so you can use your VZ wireless cell phone out there!

Note: This house has been rented for the past 7 years by the previous owner Mark. We couldn't transfer his listing to us unfortunately so we lost all the wonderful reviews. Here were some of the more recent reviews:

Everything we hoped for....every thing we needed!

5 of 5

This was our families first time renting through VRBO and it was a great experience. The house was perfect for our needs and as described. One daughter joined us in the beginning of the week, and our other daughter and family with two young children joined us later in the week. We had wonderful family meals, and loads of fun setting on the porch, gathering eggs, watching the stars at night. Played in the creek down the road, went to trout pond twice, climbed up to the observation towere at Sceneca Rocks and are planning to take a short hike at Lost River SP before we leave, today. The Lost River Grill is a great place to eat and we enjoyed the Museum and local Arts Coop. The Walmart in Morfield is about 22 miles away and an easy drive. The only downside of our trip is seeing that the cottage is under contract.

Great Hideaway for Our Young Family

5 of 5

While there were a few quirks to the property our stay was very pleasant. Most things were as described and the setting was perfect as we could have hoped. The beds were comfy and the central air was a blessing on the warm afternoons. We have 3 kids, 5 and under and they loved it. We walked in the creek down the road, got eggs in the morning, had lots of time roving around the house and yard. If it's still a rental next summer, it will be at the top of our list.

The Mountainside Farmhouse was what we needed

5 of 5

The Mountainside Farmhouse was exactly as described and met all of our expectations. We were looking for somewhere to spend a quiet week, with the whole family (including dogs), that was off the grid, with plenty of outdoor adventures.

The farmhouse is quaint, well taken care of, comfortable and quiet. The beds are super comfy and the design of the house is perfect for late night conversations indoors or on the front porch.

While in Lost River we ventured on many great hikes, swam and fished at Trout Lake, went horseback riding, visited the Farmers Market, had several nice dinners in town. We also took a drive to Washington DC for a day trip .

The Lost River area is beautiful, but if you're a city dweller please be aware that you will experience nature and it's elements. We saw ample wildlife including deer, turtles and snakes. Also, if visiting in July be sure to treat your dogs for ticks and check yourself after each outdoor adventure as there are plenty of ticks. Please don't let that scare you away!

Lastly, and most significant for us was how exceptional Phil was as a host Phil accomplished the very challenging task of balancing being available and helpful but also distant.

Overall, simply put, a super place to visit.

Cute house, fantastic location!

Super cute, private, comfortable beds, nice amenities (including fast wifi, which was important to at least two members of my family), steps to the forrest, cute little town. We had a wonderful time, and Karen is a great host!

Wonderfully peaceful country retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our group of friends spent a quiet weekend in the country and were warm and cozy despite the snow flurries. We loved the bedrooms flooded with light; we all enjoyed the books and artworks. Everything worked perfectly. The showers and heated bathroom floors were outstanding! We watched deer, woodchuck, and a pilleated woodpecker from the porch. We would have had a fire on the patio but it was too cold out. The Star were spectacular and we awoke to birds each morning. As you can tell, we loved it all and want to go back. Thank you, Karen, for worrying about us during the snow. With such good WiFi, I felt like I could contact you anytime. Thanks again.

Perfect location and beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

We came over from DC for a quick weekend getaway in Lost River and couldn't have had a better experience. The kitchen is fully stocked and perfect for cooking your own meals. Our dog was in heaven with the fenced in back yard. The home had lots of books, games, and the Amazon TV with netflix and hulu was great. Very fast wifi as well and a very cool Nest thermostat system. Very close to Lost River State Park and the scenic North Mountain Trail.

Wonderful Stay for Family Ski Trip

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful getaway for the family. The house had all the charm and warmth of a country home but with the well-maintained amenities of a new build. Husband loved the heated floor in our bathroom (wish we had them in our own house!). With three bedrooms, the kids loved having their own space. And I liked the modern kitchen in the downstairs open floor plan with 270 degree views of the beautiful countryside. Came for the weekend and skied at Canaan Valley which has an excellent ski school - better than Snowshoe and Wisp with more extensive trails for beginners. The kids had a blast and asked when they would be returning. Enjoyed it so much coming back again at the end of the month!

Perfect cyclists retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Karen's cottage was the perfect retreat for my group of cycling friends. This adorable house is ideally located for cyclists exploring the pristine WV roads and hikers discovering the forest just next door. After a great day out and about we found the kitchen was well equipped for cooking dinner--and even had a waffle maker for the next morning! We're definitely heading back!

We loved it!!!

  • 4 of 5

Karen's house is a lovely place located in the very relaxing Lost River, W.V. It was so quiet and peaceful there and my whole family was able to relax and enjoy. The house is beautifully kept and in great shape. It is close (10 minutes) to the beautiful Lost River State Park which offers great hiking (Cranny Crow is a beautiful spot). Karen was easy to deal with even with taking over our reservation from the previous owner, and was quick to respond to any questions or concerns that we had. Karen is the new owner of this property and is making every effort to make this house a welcoming and relaxing place. The only downside and why I took away one star was because of the slight sulfuric odor from the tap water (it is well water). One can only smell it if you are up close, but with the filtered water spigot at the kitchen sink, drinking water was no issue. The heated tile bathroom floors were absolutely great!! This one problem with the water won't stop us from returning to this great place. The grounds were well kept and everything was spic n' span when we arrived. The beds were comfy and the sheets clean and fresh smelling -mmm! She took care of the little things as well - from books and magazines to board games, wifi & TV. It is a modern house in a country setting. If you want a relaxing place in the country that is close to Washington, DC, Karen's farmhouse is the ticket. We look forward to staying there again. Thank you.
