About Donovan Goebert

The Log House is a family treasure dedicated to 5 stepbrothers, Christopher, Scolaighe, Donovan, Daniel, and Dominic by their parents Chris and Maria to experience for their lifetimes.

Lots were purchased in 2005 on the Lake side (opposite the golf course side) of the Resort and the original Log House was completed in 2007. It hosted hundreds of guests for vacations, reunions, retreats, holiday gatherings, anniversaries, a 100th birthday, two marriage proposals and many other beautiful moments for the following 5 years.

In 2012, it was converted into a full-time residence to escape the rat race of northern VA and provide a smaller and more personal school experience in the Shenandoah Valley for the boys, especially the youngest who continues to make autism feel like a special bonus more than a disability. Another wing was added to include a large master suite, an office, a 3 car garage, and a professional grade gym. A new sun room and breakfast room were added to the original Log House, as well as a sitting room "bridge" to connect the new wing. Outside, a detached log workshop was built and the driveway was upgraded to a U-shape and a beautiful stone stairway and wall from the road to the house was constructed.

In the winter of 2012, Scolaighe chose to marry his beautiful wife Masha at The Log House, nearly twice its original size, The winter wedding ceremony took place on the center stairway witnessed by nearly 100 guests from across the country and the world. It was a magical christening of The Log House with the types of moments it was always meant to inspire.

In 2015 when 2 of the youngest brothers finished high school and began college and the Army National Guard, The Log House 2.0 was converted to a vacation rental home for hundreds more guests to enjoy.

Thank you so much to the family, friends, and returning guests who continue to make The Log House a special, unique, and timeless setting for some of life's most memorable moments.

What makes this cabin unique

The Log House is the only genuine log cabin that is available to rent to large families on the resort and is even displayed on the Bryce Resort webpage within the lodging section! It's breathtaking, but comfortable. Spacious enough for large families, but cozy enough for intimate gatherings, including the brothers' annual family reunions since 2007 and the family's first wedding. Many guests have returned year after year for their own family traditions, and we are confident that The Log House 2.0 will be a huge success. We hope to see YOU at The Log House for your next vacation!

Very enjoyable, comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We loved the chalet. The owner returned my e-mails immediately when I needed to e-mail him about anything. The only thing we could find that we would add would be a refrigerator downstairs near the bar. Maybe in the laundry room??? So, if that was the only thing, I think the chalet is pretty much perfect! We would love to make this a yearly destination. Thank you!

Great Vacation Home!

  • 4 of 5

We had a group of family from seniors to boys , ages 9 and 12. We all enjoyed the house and there was plenty of room for everyone. We especially liked the little cozy rooms, the sunroom and the bridge room. Didn't like the steep entrance to the driveway and one of the cars dragged coming and going. Donovan was very helpful and always responded very quickly to questions. I would recommend this house to anyone but drive an SUV. The boys especially liked the fishing at the nearby lake. The kitchen was not as well stocked with casserole dishes, only one 9x13, and the kitchen cupboards were not clean inside. There were plenty of towels, the furniture was all very nice, excellent beds, but we were surprised that we had to make our own beds when we got there. It's an excellent house but the cleaning crew should do much better.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry that your car had difficulties with the steep driveway; there's not much I can do to change the topography of the land but there is a parking area at the top with nice steps leading down to the front door of the house for such situations. There are a couple of reasons we leave linens folded up at the foot of the beds for clients. First, we want you to know that you are getting clean linens. The second reason is so that we know when linens are dirty. If we make all of the beds prior to client arrival, we must wash all the linens regardless of whether the bed has been slept in or not. It's just a small way for us to do our part for the environment. Our apologies for any issues with the kitchen. We try to anticipate everything the kitchen needs and always add items per client suggestions. So, we will add some casserole dishes based on your feedback. During the summer months we have back to back renters and there isn't always sufficient time to get everything right. We've actually considered having earlier check-out times and later check-in times to solve this issue but are hesitant to take that time away from our clients. We will do better. We're happy your stay was enjoyable and hope to see you again in the future.

What a beautiful and well-equipped home!

  • 5 of 5

Our extended adult family (5 couples) spent a week in the Log House in July, 2017 and never felt like we were in each other's way. There were plenty of comfortable places for each of us when we needed a little "quiet time".

We are a family that loves to cook. We prepared our own breakfasts and dinners all seven days we were there, often using both the gas grill and the indoor range/oven. We did bring a few of our own favorite utensils, but the kitchen was well equipped. I would point out that there is one coffee brewing device, not two as I interpreted the listing. The one that is provided has a reservoir for the brewed coffee rather than dispensing it into a glass carafe as we were accustomed to. Donovan was kind enough to come over and show us how to use it. The lack of a second coffee pot turned out not to be a problem since my folks did bring a 12-cup coffee brewer. We like a lot of coffee.... :-)

If you plan to use the dish washer or washing machine, you might want to bring your own detergent as we could not find either in the house.

Chris and Donovan were very responsive when we had questions about the house or its alarm system which alerted us several times that it couldn't find a window downstairs.

Also, be aware that Dawn Drive does change from asphalt to gravel just before arriving at the house. This surprise, along with my GPS having a few problems, led to a few turnarounds when we were almost there. Note that cell service is sketchy on the mountain.

There were lots of interesting things to do in the area and I highly recommend you consider a few days or a week at the Log House to explore the area or just relax in the quiet of the mountains.

Lovely and Oh So Large

  • 4 of 5

The log house is big and beautiful and for our family with kids and grand kids, it was perfect!! There was plenty of space for all. It was almost a part of the adventure . . . Exploration of the house. The kids could play hide and seek for hours. And a few of the adults played in the exercise gym.

Lake Laura is not far and was part of our daily routine for a hike and swim.

Thank you for opening your home. It gave our family (all 12 of us) plenty of space and lots of memories.

Wonderful house and location!

This is a beautiful home in a great location! My only regret is that we didn't stay long enough to do everything there is to do while you are there. Would definitely return.

It is a beautiful, roomy home!

  • 5 of 5

Our family recently stayed at the Log House at Bryce Resort. We had a fantastic time!

The home is designed to host a large group which is great. The kitchen is furnished wonderfully for cooking for a large group also.

We are very interested in staying at this house again next year!

The only concern was the tv on the main floor does not have clear reception when on the

satellite feature. The reception was clear when we watched DVDs Wondered if

due to internet hookup?? Thanks!!
