About Barbara

We're a group of friends that love to travel and explore. We are interior designers, foodies and travel lovers who fell in love with Merida and want to share our lovely Centro house with new friends from around the world.

Barbara purchased this house in 2015

Why Barbara chose Centro

Before we purchased our house in 2015, it was owned by the family of a popular local architect. Originally used as an artist studio, it has a wonderful sense of openness, light and tranquility that we adore. We added some modern features and provided some of those special touches you'd expect to find in boutique hotels.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do....

What makes this house unique

Imagine enjoying drinks on your rooftop terrace during the cool evenings or a refreshing swim after a day exploring Merida Centro or the Yucatan Peninsula....

Staying at the house was absolutely amazing! Everything was as described and more.

  • 5 of 5

The house and the yard were so beautiful, nice character, clean and comfortable. The swimming pool was a must and just perfect for the hot days in Merida. Great location for visiting around town on foot and going out for dinner or a cold drink. And we always had an open spot for parking right in front of the house. Thank you so much for sharing your house with us we had a great time.

Adorable house, but your neighbor is a barking dog.

  • 3 of 5

This is a charming casita, perfect for 2 couples if you can use the back bedroom. A common wall between the bedroom and an adjacent garden amplifies the often incessant barking of the poor, neglected pooch who lives there. The owners leave him alone in the yard when they go out and he doesn’t like it. This being said, Barbara, the owner is a concerned and responsive landlord. And Mirza, Barbara’s in town proxy is helpful as well The house is well located but understand that a few blocks in Mérida can be a relatively long walk and the sidewalks are often narrow and cratered. And it can be very hot! Just around the corner is a swell language School and 2 blocks away is Oliva one truly fine Italian restaurant. No not Mexican, better. So this a great house but beware the barking dog. Also note that you will be charged for the electricity that you use and if the heat or the dog drive you into the front of the house with windows and doors shut, you will be using a good deal of electricity to run the AC. Finally note that UBER is a great and very inexpensive way to get around and if you are planning to set up house and cook in, take an Uber to the ‘burbs to do a big shop. Better than the closer Walmart.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review. As the noise was a result of a tenant’s dog, we contacted the property owner immediately, and thankfully, current guests aren’t having noise issues. I’m happy that we were able to waive your electricity charges for you. It’s standard for Merida rentals and usually very affordable. Thanks again and best wishes, Barbara

A Tranquil Space in Busy Merida

  • 5 of 5

We loved our month long stay in this beautiful home. Behind the blue doors that you enter from the street is a quiet, tranquil, beautifully decorated historic colonial. The two king suites are located so the occupants have complete privacy. In the center of the house is an open air courtyard with a small pool for cooling off during the hot Merida afternoons. The tall ceilings with fans in every room keep the house cool even when it is 90 degrees outside. Everything is beautifully designed and kept in perfect condition. Mirza is readily available to answer any questions or assist with any problems.

Merida is an active city with lots of museums, restaurants, shops and plenty of activities. The house is perfectly located so that everything is within walking distance. A car is not necessary unless you wish to take day trips to the cenotes, Mayan ruins or visit other pueblos. If you choose to wander and don’t have a vehicle, many trips are available to take you different places by bus with excellent guides.

I took advantage of my time in Merida to study Spanish at La Calle, an excellent language school with walking distance of the casa. The people at the school and, in fact, all of Merida were warm, friendly and accommodating.

I could go on and on, but suffice it to say, that this is the best place we have ever rented on our many vacations. If you are visiting Merida you can not go wrong by staying in this wonderful house.

Wonderful house and great location!

  • 5 of 5

Loved our 9 day stay here! It’s a beautiful little house and has everything you need. It quickly felt like home. We cooked breakfast several mornings before taking day trips to ruins and cenotes. But it’s close enough to walk to endless restaurants on Paseo de Montejo and Calle 60. We walked to late dinners and to the theater on most nights and always felt comfortable on the local streets. Would be happy to stay here again on our next trip to Merida!

Our Stay in Merida

  • 3 of 5

My sister and I had planned a trip to Merida for Dia de los Muertos. There was some information about the Dia de los Muertos activities on the Internet, but what we found when arriving in Merida were cancelled events and inaccurate information.

The place where we stayed was OK. It was fairly centrally located. The beds were not comfortable and the neighborhood noisy. In addition, to access the bedroom in the upper level, you had to use a very steep spiral staircase, which could prove to be a safety issue. This had not been clearly indicated in the description of the home. However the local agent was very helpful as was the owner of the home.

I think when traveling in this area, it is best to focus on experiencing the Mayan ruins, which are quite wonderful.

Excellent location in a nice neighborhood

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I had a comfortable stay at Barbara's house. It is located in a safe, quiet neighborhood, and it is walkable to most things in centro, including excellent restaurants. The living and kitchen areas are small, but functional and nicely decorated. We wanted to use the larger bedroom upstairs, but it is located outside off the patio and access to it is by a narrow, spiral staircase. It was difficult to manage with our suitcases and occasional rain. So we stayed in the downstairs bedroom, also located outside the main living area, on the other side of the plunge pool. Both bedrooms are large, nicely decorated and comfortable. The tile walkway between the main living area and the downstairs bedroom is slippery, however, if water is on it. The roof above the walkway had a leak when we were there. Barbara said she would fix the roof. I would not recommend this house for small children due to the spiral staircase and slippery tile near the outdoor patio should they walk on it barefoot after exiting the pool. The tile around the pool is cement, however, and therefore not slippery. We enjoyed our stay in this quiet neighborhood.

Owner's Response: Susan, thanks so much for your review. I'm so glad that we could accommodate your request to change your travel dates. We do pride ourselves in providing a well located and comfortable home for our guests during their stay Merida. It's lovely to hear that the rainy weather didn't stop you enjoying Merida. By the way, we replaced a cracked tile on the outside patio terrace - that fixed the problem right away! Looking forward to seeing you again in the future! Best wishes Barbara

Car: not necessary

Since the Spanish conquest, Mérida has been the cultural capital of the Yucatan peninsula. A town steeped in colonial history, with narrow streets, broad central plazas and the region’s best museums. It’s also a perfect place from which to kick off your adventure into the rest of Yucatán state. There are cheap eats, thriving craft markets, dancing and free entertainment just about every night somewhere in the downtown area.

Long popular with European travelers looking to go beyond the hubbub of Quintana Roo’s resort towns, Mérida is also the cultural crossroads of the region and it's Mayan wonders, ceynote swimming caves, eco regions with flocks of pink flamingos and the nearby beaches of the Emerald coast.

Merida's greatest asset are the people who live here. They have a beautiful town, and they know it....
