Vacation Rentals are a great alternative to hotels given the benefits of space, privacy, and added amenities. Vacation rentals generally offer additional space for less cost per night versus the typical hotel room. Amenities offered by vacation rentals often include washers and dryers, full kitchens (so you can save money by dining in), DVD players, hot tubs, games and even private pools.
While hotels are a familiar option, the popularity of vacation rentals continues to grow as more and more travelers discover the unique benefits of this type of accommodation.
What You'll Gain
In most cases you'll have more space, more privacy and more money in your pocket when you choose a vacation rental rather than a hotel. You'll also most likely have access to a kitchen and washer/dryer. If your property is part of a larger resort or condo complex, you might also enjoy privileges like golf, tennis and concierge service.
What You'll Give Up
Not all rentals are created equal. Private single-family homes may not have the same amenities that condos or villas within a resort community will. When renting the single-family home variety you may forfeit maid service, concierge service, room service and in-house restaurants. You might also encounter a lawn keeper or a pool cleaner on the property. Beach homes usually have more rigid check-in dates than hotels and may not offer any special perks. Beach chairs, bikes and baby equipment will probably have to be rented on your own.
Resort homes, condos and villas located within a resort community or condo complex generally offer a more complete amenities package. Depending on the destination, linens, beach towels and bath towels may be provided. The property may also offer daily or weekly maid service, often at extra cost. You'll find more flexible check-in dates in this type of accommodation than you would at a single-family beach house.
Understand that expectations should differ amongst different accommodations whether a vacation rental or hotel.
We had a confirmed reservation for this house for three days. When we arrived, we were told that the well was inoperative, but the owner had another smaller house and a trailer that was available that we could use. At that point, late in the afternoon with six people, we didn't have much choice, and agreed to the lessor accommodation. The next day I noticed that the original house was occupied. I stopped and talked to the tenant. He said they made a late reservation for two weeks. He said the well was working fine. This sounds like a bate and switch scheme or at the minimum the owner decided to not honor our confirmation in favor of the more lucrative two week rental.
In addition, the owner was slow returning our security deposit and it was not returned until I made an inquiry. The owner routinely did not respond to phone calls or email.
My extended family and I wanted a comfortable home base where we could eat together and enjoy each other's company during our Everglades vacation. This house was the perfect place for us! All three bedrooms are spacious and comfortable and the house has everything we needed. It sits amongst a beautiful dragon fruit farm which my son and I enjoyed exploring. It was beautifully appointed and very, very clean! It is a few miles from one of the Everglades visitor centers and about an hour from the Flamingo entrance. The owner, Doris, lives nearby and is available to answer questions and offer help if needed. If you want to explore Homestead and the Everglades, you can't beat this house!
Found just 30 miles south of Miami, Homestead offers visitors a small-town atmosphere with the amenities of a big city. A welcoming town center, with family-owned shops and restaurants, serves as an enticing introduction to the wealth of natural beauty that makes Homestead special. Indeed, the city is adjacent to two national parks. Ten miles west of Homestead is Everglades National Park, home to vast mangrove forests and watery sawgrass plains. It is truly a subtropical wilderness that shelters alligators, ibis, eagles, manatees and panthers. East of the city is Biscayne National Park encompassing the bay, barrier islands and coral reefs. And, just south of the city, are the Florida Keys, with an abundance of recreational activities.
