About Marina and Roger Lindsay

The owners have had 30 years experience with owning and managing property on the shores of Lake Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains region of Australia. They now bring their love of fly fishing, gardening and alpine habitat to Oreti River House.

Marina and Roger Lindsay purchased this house in 2008

Why Marina and Roger Lindsay chose Lumsden

Where can you combine a few good hours gardening, hiking or cycling followed by a couple of productive hours fly fishing? The long hours of daylight characteristic of the short latitudes provide all the time you need to happily engage in daytime pursuits as well as enjoy an evening cast on the nearby Oreti River. Add in beautiful scenery, clear aqua blue water, big brown trout and a friendly town and you will find you are now in a fly fishing paradise!

What makes this house unique

Oreti River House has been extensively renovated to a very high standard. Granite kitchen, modern bathrooms and comfortable beds make it a very pleasant 'Home Away from Home'. The position of the house facing the big landscaped garden allows for peaceful evenings looking up at the distant mountains -or enjoying the unique New Zealand native plants which grow in the surrounding garden.

The house is only a short drive from Queenstown, Arrowtown, Invercargill and Te Anau which makes it centrally located to some of New Zealand's most popular destinations.

Oreti River House is also only a short walk from a supermarket with bottle shop, pharmacy, restaurants and bakery. The house is very quiet and private as the garden and house are enclosed by mature, thick hedges.

Amazing stay at Oreti River House!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time at Oreti River House. We cycled on the river track, went jet boating on the Dart River, explored the local shops and towns and enjoyed a few days out in Queenstown. Ferg Burger is a must in Queenstown! The house was comfortable, clean and warm. Look forward to coming back soon!

Oreti River House is located in the country town of Lumsden on the South Island of New Zealand. It is the perfect location to enjoy fly fishing, off road cycling, walking, golf and various scenic tourist activities.

Lumsden is close to a number of New Zealand's most spectacular National Parks and Conservation Areas such as Fiordland, Mavora Lakes and Eyre Mountains. These Parks have lovely walking tracks and areas where a person can fly fish in scenic solitude. They are filled with old podocarp forests with mossy green floors. The surrounding area has interesting museums, curiosity shops, steam trains and local produce. Southland is also the home to some of New Zealand's rarest birds such as the endangered Black Billed Gull , the Whio or Blue Duck and the Takahe.

Lumsden is a short drive ( less than 1 hour) from two Airports- Queenstown and Invercargill. Both Airports have International and Domestic flights and vehicle hire services. Lumsden is centrally located to many of Southland's most picturesque areas and also within a short drive to over 35 rivers, streams, burns and lakes. It is the middle stop on the 5 day Around The Mountains Cycle and Walking Trail.

The drive to Lumsden from either Airport is scenic and fairly straightforward. In particular the drive from Queenstown Airport is especially enjoyable as it travels along the edges of Lake Wakatipu before continuing through wide, green glacial plains spotted with sheep and deer, surrounded by towering mountains.

The trip will cross the upper Mataura River which will give your first view of this 'gin clear' waterway. It is a perfect fly fishing river and this upper section shows regular pools, ripples and water flowing over colorful glacial pebbles.

Nearer to Lumsden you will travel along the edges of the middle section of the famous aqua blue Oreti River- showing its braided river bed, deep pools, shadowy undercuts and long ripples. The drive will show many aspects of the magnificent scenery that makes up this beautiful part of New Zealand.
