A veteran of three Little league campaigns, reedman in a local jazz ensemble and highlighted by a brief stint in the Cub Scouts of America, Douglas' formative years where dominated by close family ties amidst the explosion of the baby boom generation. Traveling extensively throughout his life, Doug settled on Hawaii's windward coast as his permanent home. With it's spectacular geography, temperate climate, focus on sustainable family living and the island wide embrace of the astronomy community, it was the perfect fit. His artistic nature finds an outlet in every facet of Hale Awa Hawaiian Bungalows, from the quality of the bungalow builds to the myriad of endless details, there is always an enjoyable project that begs to be done in an never ending effort to improve Hale Awa and provide a unique and enjoyable environment with which to share with guests.
My wife and I stayed here for about 6 nights, enjoyed the outdoors feel of it, the breeze coming through, the rain, the coqui frogs at night, the birds in the morning. Outdoor kitchen is a short walk on the path, but coffee maker is in the cabin, and small fridge. We loved the outdoor shower but toilet stall outside on deck sometimes had frogs hanging around in it, surprise sometimes! Bed was comfortable, cozy for a couple, and loved the nice sheets and pillows. About 3 or 4 miles from main highway, then another 3 miles or so into Pahoa, the nearest town, but also close to Keaau and bigger stores. Douglas has done a great job with the cabins, and we only had a couple suggestions: A small dresser with drawers, or small chest of drawers for women travelers. Men can live out of suit case okay, but women like drawers - this is a strong suggestion from my wife and I'm sure others. Also, women like mirrors. They are usually shorter than men so the mirror should be hung lower on the wall. Maybe full length one near coat rack? For the outdoor kitchen - eating area, my wife has suggested a small but regular height table to eat at and some regular chairs. Mostly we liked the remote location near the edge of the forest/jungle and the quiet. Thanks Douglas!
We like to stay there is a beautiful place
We differently like to come back to this place...
We loved our stay at this location! The bungalow was comfortable, clean, cozy, and private. We loved the outdoor kitchen and the beautiful setting. In fact, we made our Valentine's Day dinner on site instead of going out to dinner. We had everything that we needed during our stay and enjoyed all of the little touches (including the fantastic outdoor shower). It's quiet location was incredibly peaceful, but it's also conveniently located with easy access to many wonderful places to explore like waterfalls and tidepools for snorkeling. We would definitely recommend this property and would absolutely stay here again should we make it back to the Big Island! Thanks for a wonderful stay - it was exactly what we were looking for!
This unique bungalow, nestled in a jungle-like setting, far exceeded our expectations. If you're looking for a private, romantic get-away... you will LOVE this beautiful property. The outdoor shower is amazing. The outdoor kitchen, the hammocks, the birds and frogs, the winding paths, the ancient Hawaiian wall, the orchard where you can pick your favorite fruit, the flowers, the private pool area... we didn't want to leave, but there's so much to explore nearby!!
The beds were comfortable, the property was clean and meticulously maintained. Doug was available if we needed him, but he was "invisible"... giving us the privacy we have never experienced at other properties. We will definitely be back and we'll recommend this gem of a place to anyone visiting the Big Island.
So many wonderful memories of our stay in this quiet, peaceful, secluded bungalow in the jungle. The accommodations can't be beat! To sleep in the loft and be lulled to sleep by the soft patter of rain on the roof. Exploring the garden paths that lead you to outdoor kitchen area and covered pool deck was a treat! The property is located in an absolute Hawaiian Paradise. I will definitely be returning!
I had a great stay here with my teenage son. I loved the outdoor toilet and shower (The water is so soft)! Doug, the property manager is always helpful and very responsive. The place is as advertised in the picture, it's beautiful! On top of that, it is located near the Volcanoes, waterfalls, tide pools, and many other great spots! Pahoa, the nearest town, has a lot of good restaurants.
