*We came here for a holiday, and never left!
A veteran of three Little league campaigns, reedman in a local jazz ensemble and highlighted by a brief stint in the Cub Scouts of America, Douglas' formative years where dominated by close family ties amidst the explosion of the baby boom generation. Traveling extensively throughout his life, Doug settled on Hawaii's windward coast as his permanent home. With it's spectacular geography, temperate climate, focus on sustainable family living and the island wide embrace of the astronomy community, it was the perfect fit. His artistic nature finds an outlet in every facet of Hale Awa Hawaiian Bungalows, from the quality of the bungalow builds to the myriad of endless details, there is always an enjoyable project that begs to be done in an never ending effort to improve Hale Awa and provide a unique and enjoyable environment with which to share with guests.
This unique bungalow, nestled in a jungle-like setting, far exceeded our expectations. If you're looking for a private, romantic get-away... you will LOVE this beautiful property. The outdoor shower is amazing. The outdoor kitchen, the hammocks, the birds and frogs, the winding paths, the ancient Hawaiian wall, the orchard where you can pick your favorite fruit, the flowers, the private pool area... we didn't want to leave, but there's so much to explore nearby!!
The beds were comfortable, the property was clean and meticulously maintained. Doug was available if we needed him, but he was "invisible"... giving us the privacy we have never experienced at other properties. We will definitely be back and we'll recommend this gem of a place to anyone visiting the Big Island.
So many wonderful memories of our stay in this quiet, peaceful, secluded bungalow in the jungle. The accommodations can't be beat! To sleep in the loft and be lulled to sleep by the soft patter of rain on the roof. Exploring the garden paths that lead you to outdoor kitchen area and covered pool deck was a treat! The property is located in an absolute Hawaiian Paradise. I will definitely be returning!
I had a great stay here with my teenage son. I loved the outdoor toilet and shower (The water is so soft)! Doug, the property manager is always helpful and very responsive. The place is as advertised in the picture, it's beautiful! On top of that, it is located near the Volcanoes, waterfalls, tide pools, and many other great spots! Pahoa, the nearest town, has a lot of good restaurants.
We had a perfect stay in this little paradise. Space, perfect place, awsome outdoor kitchen. All in the hawaiian nature. Our family had amazing moments here. Douglas is a gentleman so fair and serious. Bravo !
We had a great time! The property is very private and the bungalows are newer and nicely done. Outdoor shower was great and the BBQ kitchen was fun to cook in. Location is perfect for seeing that side of the island. The owner was very responsive. A great value for the money. Highly recommended.
We were looking for private - just us two - getaway for a special occasion. And we found it at Hale Awa. All the previous reviewers are not exaggerating; this place is simply beautiful. It’s secluded, very private, has features normal people can only dream of, like an outdoor rainwater shower (we just left the place, but already missing it) and the sound of the jungle all day and night long. Even so the bungalows sleep 4 I would highly recommend this place for romantic getaways only.
From the quoting process throughout the whole stay Douglas always responded very fast and resolved what needed to be resolved within a short period of time, while staying practically invisible.
This was our first trip to Big Island and Puna turned out to be a lovely place. The West coast of Big Island is very much like the West coast of Maui: big waves, mostly rain forest and you should expect some rain… if it happens, just go outside and take a natural shower. You are close to the active volcano, to the lava flow that almost reached Pāhoa in 2014, to a dramatic coast, to beautiful snorkeling places south of Pāhoa and close to Hilo (where you would not expect them) and beautiful waterfalls (as a side note, most of them are not free anymore, you either have to pay a parking fee, a walk-in fee or an entry fee for a Botanical Garden). Anyhow, most of them are still worth it.
We will return, hopefully soon.
