Hale Awa (hall-lee ah-vah) Hawaiian Bungalows are located in Hawaii's lush district of Puna. Situated near some of the most beautiful landscapes Hawaii has to offer.... black sand beaches, Volcanoes National Park and the spectacular Red Road. Enjoy a slower way of life, swim with green sea turtles, witness the annual Humpback whale migration, climb a volcano or just relax by the sea. Hale Awa offers some the most beautiful affordable luxurious accommodations anywhere on the Big Island. Here sustainability does not mean giving up comfort. Completely solar powered and outfitted with rain water showers, our accommodations are both comfortable and carbon free. Spread over four lush acres of tropical landscape, including organic fruit orchards, exotic tropical flowers, native Ohia forests, swimming pool & extra large outdoor kitchen.... complete with fire pit and southern style BBQ smoker.

Our bungalows’ rustic charm and quality craftsmanship is apparent in the details. Great care has been given to every detail to ensure your stay is a comfortable one. Hale Awa Bungalows feature high quality queen sized beds with an extra queen bed in the sleeping loft (each bungalow sleeping a total of 4). Our bungalows, both Pohoiki (po-ho-e-key) & Ahalanui (a-ha-la-new-e), have a lanai sitting area, private garden rain-water lava shower, Hawaiian style toilet enclosure and local Hawaiian decor. Dine with a living room atmosphere in an outdoor tropical garden, our covered 20’x20’ exterior BBQ kitchen, "Ohia Lumi Kuke", is a shared area that features a southern style BBQ smoker, sink, fire pit, hammocks and hand made rustic Brazilian furniture ....Rain or shine, you can still enjoy the great outdoors. Relax with a cold beverage and grill that fresh fish you purchased from a local fisherman or forget the cooking altogether and enjoy a meal courtesy of one of our many fine family owned restaurants (Sorry no Denny's or McDonald's).

Sustainable eco-friendly living provides peace of mind and a care-free holiday. Completely solar powered, we also collect rain water for our showers, making your stay comfortable and convenient without polluting our atmosphere. Located in the big island banana belt next to Nanawale Forest Reserve we receive more sunshine than the surrounding micro-climates. Fabulous... beyond our expectations!!

  • 5 of 5

This unique bungalow, nestled in a jungle-like setting, far exceeded our expectations. If you're looking for a private, romantic get-away... you will LOVE this beautiful property. The outdoor shower is amazing. The outdoor kitchen, the hammocks, the birds and frogs, the winding paths, the ancient Hawaiian wall, the orchard where you can pick your favorite fruit, the flowers, the private pool area... we didn't want to leave, but there's so much to explore nearby!!

The beds were comfortable, the property was clean and meticulously maintained. Doug was available if we needed him, but he was "invisible"... giving us the privacy we have never experienced at other properties. We will definitely be back and we'll recommend this gem of a place to anyone visiting the Big Island.

Spectacular!

  • 5 of 5

So many wonderful memories of our stay in this quiet, peaceful, secluded bungalow in the jungle. The accommodations can't be beat! To sleep in the loft and be lulled to sleep by the soft patter of rain on the roof. Exploring the garden paths that lead you to outdoor kitchen area and covered pool deck was a treat! The property is located in an absolute Hawaiian Paradise. I will definitely be returning!

Wonderful Place!

  • 5 of 5

I had a great stay here with my teenage son. I loved the outdoor toilet and shower (The water is so soft)! Doug, the property manager is always helpful and very responsive. The place is as advertised in the picture, it's beautiful! On top of that, it is located near the Volcanoes, waterfalls, tide pools, and many other great spots! Pahoa, the nearest town, has a lot of good restaurants.

Newer, Private and Unique

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time! The property is very private and the bungalows are newer and nicely done. Outdoor shower was great and the BBQ kitchen was fun to cook in. Location is perfect for seeing that side of the island. The owner was very responsive. A great value for the money. Highly recommended.

Best Romantic Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for private - just us two - getaway for a special occasion. And we found it at Hale Awa. All the previous reviewers are not exaggerating; this place is simply beautiful. It’s secluded, very private, has features normal people can only dream of, like an outdoor rainwater shower (we just left the place, but already missing it) and the sound of the jungle all day and night long. Even so the bungalows sleep 4 I would highly recommend this place for romantic getaways only.

From the quoting process throughout the whole stay Douglas always responded very fast and resolved what needed to be resolved within a short period of time, while staying practically invisible.

This was our first trip to Big Island and Puna turned out to be a lovely place. The West coast of Big Island is very much like the West coast of Maui: big waves, mostly rain forest and you should expect some rain… if it happens, just go outside and take a natural shower. You are close to the active volcano, to the lava flow that almost reached Pāhoa in 2014, to a dramatic coast, to beautiful snorkeling places south of Pāhoa and close to Hilo (where you would not expect them) and beautiful waterfalls (as a side note, most of them are not free anymore, you either have to pay a parking fee, a walk-in fee or an entry fee for a Botanical Garden). Anyhow, most of them are still worth it.

We will return, hopefully soon.
