Great jungle experience

  • 5 of 5

Glamping in the jungle! We enjoyed our stay in that cute little cottage. The outdoor shower is AMAZING. The place is really clean and although it feel remote it is quite close to shops and restaurants.

Since it was pouring rain everyday we spent there, going to the kitchen to cook was a bit of a mission. In my opinion there’s a few things that could be added to the kitchen set to make it more fun to be around and help people saving money on restaurants. That’s the only “down side” of this gem. Overall we loved our experience.

Glamping in a rainforest

  • 5 of 5

We spent a month in one of Doug’s beautifully crafted, very private, sparklingly clean, well located bungalows hidden away in a jungle like setting at the far end of a large residential development. This development, Hawaiian Paradise Park, is off a main road that is about 5 miles to Pahoa, 5 miles to Keauu and 8 miles to Hilo. The bungalow is 4 miles off that main road. There is plenty of shopping , restaurants and conveniences in the towns. It’s also within a half hour drive to 3 farmers markets, lovely parks and coastline walks, snorkeling and swimming activities and about 45 minutes to Volcano National Park. Nights and mornings are a cacophony of chirping birds, croaking frogs, barking dogs , clucking chickens and, oddly, roosters who often crow even into midnight. The windows are screens without panes so it’s all fresh air. Tiny geckos crawl about the cabin but never bother you and the tiny frogs do sometimes hop into the Hawaiian style toilet out on your porch. It took about a day before I became amused by them. The warm water outdoor shower is divine and I miss it already. The almost daily gifts of fruit from Doug’s orchard were such a sweet touch of Aloha. As other reviews have mentioned, Doug is just a text away if you need him and invisible if you don’t. One week during our stay, the couple renting the cabin next door landed in Hilo and found themselves unable to rent a car. They told us that Doug drove them into town to rent a U-Haul truck for a few days and drove them around to show them where to go in town for the things they need. The outdoor kitchen is also clean and spacious and the mosquitos are remarkably well controlled by a fan in the ceiling. We mentioned to Doug one day that It was difficult to reach the power strip in the kitchen he moved it that afternoon! This experience can best be described as “glamping” ...glamorous camping with all the conveniences of an upscale “safari tent “with a really comfortable bed amidst all the beauty of nature. As I write this I am now in a lodge with an indoor shower , glass windows and a TV and I miss the bungalow already.

My wife and I booked this property for our first trip to Hawaii. We were extremely impressed with the detail and quality of this property. Doug does an amazing job keeping this property clean and in amazing order. We had an excellent time at this remote feeling property. It was close to Pahoa, and the tide pools. It was also close to Hilo. The weather here seemed miraculously sunny all the time even when there was rain around us. Doug also provided excellent suggestions for other fun side trips including Uncles Awa bar. For a quick lunch, stop at the grocery store in Pahoa and get a Poke bowl, for a nice dinner try Kaleos. The tide pools are not to be missed, nor are the champagne Ponds. Doug was extremely accommodating, yet allowed complete privacy on the property. Simply put, he was there if you had any questions or needs, yet faded into the backdrop of the beautiful surroundings and was a non-obtrusive. Look forward to staying at this property again the next time we visit.

Nice Place in a Jungle

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for about 6 nights, enjoyed the outdoors feel of it, the breeze coming through, the rain, the coqui frogs at night, the birds in the morning. Outdoor kitchen is a short walk on the path, but coffee maker is in the cabin, and small fridge. We loved the outdoor shower but toilet stall outside on deck sometimes had frogs hanging around in it, surprise sometimes! Bed was comfortable, cozy for a couple, and loved the nice sheets and pillows. About 3 or 4 miles from main highway, then another 3 miles or so into Pahoa, the nearest town, but also close to Keaau and bigger stores. Douglas has done a great job with the cabins, and we only had a couple suggestions: A small dresser with drawers, or small chest of drawers for women travelers. Men can live out of suit case okay, but women like drawers - this is a strong suggestion from my wife and I'm sure others. Also, women like mirrors. They are usually shorter than men so the mirror should be hung lower on the wall. Maybe full length one near coat rack? For the outdoor kitchen - eating area, my wife has suggested a small but regular height table to eat at and some regular chairs. Mostly we liked the remote location near the edge of the forest/jungle and the quiet. Thanks Douglas!

Wonderful getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at this location! The bungalow was comfortable, clean, cozy, and private. We loved the outdoor kitchen and the beautiful setting. In fact, we made our Valentine's Day dinner on site instead of going out to dinner. We had everything that we needed during our stay and enjoyed all of the little touches (including the fantastic outdoor shower). It's quiet location was incredibly peaceful, but it's also conveniently located with easy access to many wonderful places to explore like waterfalls and tidepools for snorkeling. We would definitely recommend this property and would absolutely stay here again should we make it back to the Big Island! Thanks for a wonderful stay - it was exactly what we were looking for!
