A charming 1860s original early settlers cottage, recently restored to a high standard, providing unique accommodation. The cottage has modern facilities and is in a fantastic rural coastal location, central for all travel and tourist options. Self contained and self catering, providing choices for guests.
We are on the bus route to Dunedin City Centre with a full service from Portobello. Cyclists enjoy the peninsula harbourside road, and we are also constructing a new cycle trail, which goes right around the whole harbour- several mountain bikes available for hire at the cottage. All main information on tourist and other attractions is available in the cottage, along with detailed maps.
Its an easy walk or cycle ride, or short drive to the popular Portobello Village around Portobello bay. Portobello provides a great range of restaurants, cafes, a good friendly pub, a well stocked village shop for all your basics and arts/crafts, an excellent laundrette.
The rural location is peaceful and the cottage enjoys a private, pretty cottage garden with table and chairs and sun umbrella. Guests can relax and observe the night sky in this area as it is unspoilt by artificial lights, so is ideal and spectacular for star gazing.
A wide range of beaches and walks and boat trips, close to Portobello Village, the wildlife centre of Otago, with yellow eyed penguins and little blue penguins, the albatross colony, seals, sealions, occasional whales and dolphins, birdlife and more. Larnack castle and its wonderful garden are in the location. Outstanding arts and crafts are to be found on the Peninsula. Many sports including surfing, sea kayaking, cycling, etc.
(Formally known as Crabapple Cottage.) The owner lives in the property next door and is available to help if requested.
The cottage is old so and guests are asked to treat gently. We collect our own rain water which is excellent to drink, and aim to conserve water where possible. The attic is accessed by a fold-up loft ladder/attic staircase, which is new and safe but narrower than a full staircase. It also has a stair gate at the top for safety. There is no smoking inside the cottage. The kitchen has a small oven, microwave, electric and other equipment, fine for most peoples needs (i.e. not a full size oven).
Extras: Linen (included); Bicycle Hire Per Day (Optional, NZ$15.00 per person); NOTE: Under Kiwi bach tradition you are expected to: Clean the house and do the dishes before you leave;
On the new cycle route, mountain bicycles for rent, fresh eggs and veggies are often available also.
Charming place to stay - great location for Penguin watching on the Otago Peninsula. The garden and surrounds are beautiful and a lovely spot for a relaxing breakfast.
Beautiful, comfortable little cottage. Cute, flower-filled garden. Pretty location. Ladder to upstairs bedroom a minor challenge if you aren't particularly nimble-footed but definitely manageable. We loved our stay there and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others.
