Portobello Settlers Cottage

Property type cottage

Photos and Description of this Dunedin City holiday cottage

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 1 Bathrooms, (Sleeps 6)

A charming 1860s original early settlers cottage, recently restored to a high standard, providing unique accommodation. The cottage has modern facilities and is in a fantastic rural coastal location, central for all travel and tourist options. Self contained and self catering, providing choices for guests.

We are on the bus route to Dunedin City Centre with a full service from Portobello. Cyclists enjoy the peninsula harbourside road, and we are also constructing a new cycle trail, which goes right around the whole harbour- several mountain bikes available for hire at the cottage. All main information on tourist and other attractions is available in the cottage, along with detailed maps.

Its an easy walk or cycle ride, or short drive to the popular Portobello Village around Portobello bay. Portobello provides a great range of restaurants, cafes, a good friendly pub, a well stocked village shop for all your basics and arts/crafts, an excellent laundrette.

The rural location is peaceful and the cottage enjoys a private, pretty cottage garden with table and chairs and sun umbrella. Guests can relax and observe the night sky in this area as it is unspoilt by artificial lights, so is ideal and spectacular for star gazing.

A wide range of beaches and walks and boat trips, close to Portobello Village, the wildlife centre of Otago, with yellow eyed penguins and little blue penguins, the albatross colony, seals, sealions, occasional whales and dolphins, birdlife and more. Larnack castle and its wonderful garden are in the location. Outstanding arts and crafts are to be found on the Peninsula. Many sports including surfing, sea kayaking, cycling, etc.

(Formally known as Crabapple Cottage.) The owner lives in the property next door and is available to help if requested.

Special conditions:

The cottage is elderly so and guests are asked to treat gently. We collect our own rain water which is excellent to drink - in their is plenty but in the dry season guests are asked to take shortish showers and not to waste any water please. The attic is accessed by a fold-up loft ladder/attic staircase, is new and safe. It also has a stair gate at the top for safety. There is no smoking inside the cottage.
