My husband and I had a delightful experience at Garden D'Art recently. We stayed for one month, and thoroughly enjoyed the beautifully-landscaped gardens, lovely traditional wooden house and quiet location away from the bustle of Melaka city. However, our hosts, the Gan family, were the best "feature" of all. We were warmly welcomed, and well-cared for like no other home rental or homestay we have experienced, and we have traveled for many years all over the world. Kim Poh is the owner, house- and furniture-builder and gardener extraordinaire. On a number of occasions, he took us to off-the-beaten-track places that were incredible. Other times, we were invited to eat dinner with the family in their lovely gazebo, delicious meals prepared by their wonderful housemaid, Atun (Atun also tempted us many mornings with local breakfast items!). Kim Poh's daughter RuiFang (also known as Vicky) and I communicated via email to make our booking, and she did everything possible to make sure we were enjoying our stay. Upon our arrival, she took us in her car on a tour of Melaka, pointing out her favorite eateries, and to a hypermarket to buy groceries. RuiFang offered many recommendations about things to see and do in the area, including night markets (for delicious local foods), travel to Singapore (only 3 hours away) and car rental.
Although the family has several bicycles for guests to use, given distances to Melaka (a 20 minute car ride) and other sites, and the midday heat, we opted to rent a car for the month, which we highly recommend for anyone staying at Garden D'Art.
As mentioned above, the traditional wooden house we stayed in was beautiful and well kept. Much care and thought went into its construction. There are 2 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom/shower. A large verandah with table/chairs and several wooden lounge chairs was the main living space, and was quite comfortable. The downstairs bedroom has an additional back porch with sink, refrigerator, table and counter space. In addition, the main kitchen we used was in another building 20 meters away, with sink, cooktop, toaster/convection oven, countertop space and cupboard for food storage.
Garden D'Art is a stunning property and, along with the warm hospitality of our hosts, was a fantastic introduction to Malaysia. We can't wait to return!
