About the property

2 Bedroom, 1 Bath Quaint Home With A Salt Water Spa/Pool Close To Downtown

Be prepared to fall in love! This vintage home retains much of the original charm from when it was first built in 1916, but with just the right amount of modern updates to enjoy. Located in the Dunbar Spring Neighborhood, one of Tucson's first neighborhoods, adjacent to downtown and just 2 miles from University of Arizona, this 950 square foot home has one bedroom with a king-size deluxe bed for maximum comfort, a second bedroom with a queen bed and a pullout couch in the living room. It is decorated with a mix of antiques and modern pieces and contains quite a bit of art from latin and local artists. Heating, cooling and hot water tank are all new and energy efficient. Carport accommodates 2 cars and the driveway could readily house an RV. The kitchen has a full size gas range/oven and refrigerator and freezer. The kitchen is completely outfitted with everything you would need to cook/ bake at home, complete with pots, pans, bakeware, dish ware, toaster, blender, indoor grill, coffee maker, french press, expresso maker, a full array of herbs and spices. There is a full size washer and dryer. The bathroom has an oversize shower with 3 shower heads. There are 2 flatscreen TV's, one in the living room, one in the main bedroom, which also has a DVD player. The kitchen has a glass table with four chairs and outside on the covered, private patio, is another table and 4 chairs for outdoor dining.

But the back yard!!!! This is one of the biggest highlights of our home! With the outdoor dining on the covered porch, the cozy outdoor fireplace with seating, the tranquil sound of the fountain, the bistro area, the safe and gated salt water spa/pool with outdoor seating, this is a place to recharge as a single traveler, enjoy romantically as couple, have a blast as a family, or host a party or gathering with friends (the former owners told us once there was a party out there that housed 150 people!). There is a lovely cactus garden, outdoor bar, outdoor mini 'fridge, grill and twinkling outdoor lighting to enjoy your evenings!

Take the Sun link streetcar downtown to one of the many restaurants in the area, shops and art galleries. Just minutes to super fun 4th avenue and University of Arizona. Hiking spots are as close as 15-20 minutes away!

About Judy or Melissa

Hi! My name is Judy and I live in Oro Valley. I grew up in Connecticut, but moved to Tucson in 1979 to attend University of Arizona. I have seen Tucson really expand over the years, but have always loved the charm of Tucson's older neighborhoods. I have traveled around the world, but always come back home to the land of cactus and sunshine. Most likely, it will be my wonderful daughter-in-law, Melissa, who will be your contact person while in Tucson. She is smart (U of A grad in Biology), warm, friendly and welcoming and an outstanding fix it girl! I hope you really get a chance to enjoy our lovely Dunbar Spring Retreat!

Judy or Melissa purchased this house in 2015

Why Judy or Melissa chose Downtown

Dunbar Spring neighborhood is culturally diverse and is home to some of the country's best environmentalist like Brad Lancaster, who is a water harvesting whiz and travels all over the world teaching people and governments on permaculture and water-harvesting. It is my goal to obtain solar panels for the whole house and a water harvesting collection system. The Dunbar Spring Neighborhood organic community garden, was once voted the Best Community Garden in Tucson. I look forward to helping with this project to restore it to its original splendor. There is such pride in the history of this neighborhood as you can see by the artistic signposts and painted street art. I love being a part of all this!

What makes this house unique

The former owners have said they have hosted huge parties at this home and I can believe it with the many seating areas and nooks in the back yard, the bubbling fountain, the romantic sound of the train rumbling by, the outdoor fire pit, and the salt water spa/pool, but it is also a wonderful place to feel cozy inside. I loved mixing latin elements with antiques with modern touches for a homey, but eclectic feel. I wanted to decorate with some vintage Tucson photos, but was unable to find any. Instead, I used photos I took in Peru and printed them in sepia tone. One picture of children is from my travels in Guatemala. There is a series of paintings of horses by local Tucson artist Virginia Stonebarger and a pastel and mixed media collage of the Maitreya Buddha by local artist Pat Aiken. The settee is a 19th century piece from a plantation in Virginia, as is the spool bed from 1895.

unique getaway

  • 4 of 5

Property is well maintained, unique and welcoming. We loved the pool and the ability to control the temperature. Close to everything downtown and easily accessible to freeway. Melissa is very responsive to any requests. There were two downsides: the home is located very near the railroad tracks and the train whistles were LOUD. Also there were major dust bunnies on the floor in the front bedroom and the bed head had not been dusted in some time.

Cute and convenient!

  • 4 of 5

Property was as advertised. We especially enjoyed the (brand new) gas grill and the decadent option of converting the plunge pool into a spa. Although others report it was not an issue for them, we definitely found the train noise (esp. overnight) to be a factor.

wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for the month of February. It was a great experience. Melissa (owner) was very helpful and responsive to any need we had. The location was perfect for us. We could walk to many restaurants, museums, bike trails, downtown and the university. While the inside of the house was clean and beautifully decorated, we loved the back yard - watching the birds and the water bath and the pool/hot tub. We will definitely stay here again! Thanks for everything.

Nice Oasis Getaway!

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I just stayed here for 5 days. The house and property are great, especially the backyard. The pool is able to be a hot-tub or a pool which we really enjoyed and the back porch is perfect for eating and relaxing. The area/neighborhood the house is located in is not necessarily the greatest, but the property always felt safe and was mostly quiet. Would be a perfect spot for 2-4 people.

Tucson has 284 days of sunshine a year, and there are so many outdoorsy things to do. Go for a hike at Gates Pass, 10 minutes away (also a great spot to watch the sunset!) or walk Tumamoc Hill (5 minutes away).

University of Arizona is just 5 minutes away, an easy car ride or walk to the Modern Street Car which will take you all around the university area with great shopping, restaurants and University of Arizona sports events.

But one of the best things about the Dunbar Spring Vintage Retreat, is enjoying the backyard oasis. Whether hosting a party with the many places for outdoor seating, gathering around the fire or enjoying the solar-heated, salt water spool (spa/pool combo), the backyard is a delight.
