This lovely rental property is situated in the middle of 24 acres of fields and woods. A private first floor entryway welcomes you into a cozy living room with a wood-stove (and an always-filled wood-bin;) a common-use room with a microwave, mini-fridge, toaster-oven, coffee-maker, large table, board games, and cards; a dressing room (with a roll-away to pull out for an extra guest); and a large bathroom with a shower. Upstairs, an open floor plan offers a sleeping area with a queen bed and a reading area with well-stocked bookshelves. The back door opens onto small deck; the stairs provide a second-floor exit to the outside.
My husband, Mark and I met as 20-something-year-olds just down the road from this place many-many moons ago. After moving away and living in Connecticut for 24 years, we bought this house; we just couldn't resist. I was born and raised in Florida, never even knowing where Vermont was on the map. Now, I can't imagine what my life would have been like without having benefitted from all the many charms that come with living here, not just once, but TWICE!
Barbara Sherrod purchased this apartment in 2001
We were smitten with this property before we even saw it. We heard the name of the private road where it sits: The Milky Way, and understood its instruction - to stand outside on a clear night and look up into our galaxy. Quite simply, based on this promise alone, we were falling in love with it before any formal "meeting." When we finally did come see it and realized it offered such a long view across the river valley and into New Hampshire, we were goners. Every day that's gone by since then, we've been humbled by the beauty of the place.
Privacy, views, quiet...and more privacy!
This 2 floor, very clean, spacious and private apartment is perfect for a romantic getaway, yet could comfortably accommodate 3 people. The furnishings are comfortable. The towels and linens are high quality. Barbara provides a variety of cold breakfast items and snacks and even offers to wash your dishes. If you forget your toothbrush, Barbara has that covered, too. On a clear day, the view goes on for miles. On a clear night, the Milky Way seems to wrap itself around you. The hosts strike the right balance of being friendly and helpful, while respecting your privacy.
If you have any difficulty with stairs, realize that the bedroom and the bathroom are on different floors. The eating area has a table and chairs, coffee maker, microwave, toaster oven and small refrigerator. This is not quite a kitchen, yet there are a lot of simple breakfasts or snacks that you can prepare and enjoy easily.
We would highly recommend this property to family and friends. Top of the Milky Way is a special place and a great value. We hope to visit again.
The best thing by far was the night sky. We literally saw more stars than we've ever seen before and could actually see the dust of the Milky Way. So the name of this place, Top of the Milky Way, fits well! Breath-taking! The accommodations were great with plenty of space for my wife and our 18-month old. One challenging thing was where to put our pack-n-play for our little one, who goes to bed much earlier than us, of course, but we made it work. Barbara was incredibly hospitable and kept the kitchenette well-stocked. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and the view (again of the sky, but also the valley), and we will certainly be back!
I stayed with my parents to celebrate my mother's 70s birthday. We all very much enjoyed our stay at Barbara & Mark's *beautiful* property! Everything was SO nice and clean, and it was such a relaxing and peaceful stay for us. We enjoyed walking around the property, too. There is no kitchen or sink (except for the sink in the bathroom), but there is a very nice dining area with microwave, toaster, coffee maker, mini-fridge etc. Barbara kindly provided various kinds of snacks (crackers, cheese, fruits, hummus, etc.) and drinks for us, and offered to wash our dishes! She is extremely kind and very accommodating. The bed upstairs faces the large windows, where you could enjoy the gorgeous view of the field and the gazebo! My husband was not able to join us this time, but I would love to go back with him someday.
Mark and Barbara,
Thank you so much for having us at your home this January. We began our life as a family in the hospitable and generous grace of you both.
We made it safely to your home due to your help on a cold winter night, thank you for rescuing us when our car would not make it up the hill. Thank you for helping us get up the hill the following day, what a life saver.
And thank you for your above and beyond hospitality! Even catering to a gluten free diet, providing delicious food, taking care of our dishes, and a making us a beautiful and scrumptious wedding cake!!
Your home is beautiful (inside and out) and so comfortable. You provided far more than we could have dreamed of!
We deeply enjoy the memory of staying at the Top of the Milky Way,
