About Ray Stephens

My wife and I bought this farmhouse because we saw the potential it had and wanted to remodel it to its potential. It is a wonderful old house with lots of history. It took way too long to remodel it...8 years. I found I just didn't have the time to put into it that I thought. It was a wonderful project and we enjoyed most of the process. As we

remodeled it, we wanted to do it in a way that we'd be very happy and comfortable to live there ourselves. We've succeeded in doing that. The house has all new plumbing, heating, electrical, windows, roof, kitchen, 2 new bathrooms. The floors were sanded to bring out the original wood floors and beauty.

Ray Stephens purchased this farmhouse in 2002

Why Ray Stephens chose Downeast and Acadia

Since we live just down the road, we felt this property made sense to purchase. We knew the previous owner and wanted to continue to care and appreciate the house as he had.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Off the kitchen there is a nice shed or mud room, if the weather is inclement and gives a place to take off wet clothes or muddy shoes and boots. The farmhouse also has a unique white cast-iron farmhouse sink. There are many nooks and crannies that are exciting and unusual for the kids to explore.

Our family came from Dubai, Colorado, Pennsylvania and Illinois for a weeklong family reunion. It was the perfect location for 8, including a 2-year old. Ray and his wife brought a crib over and set it up for us upon arrival. We did all our own cooking and found the kitchen very convenient for working together for meal prep and cleanup. Breakfasts and dinners were leisurely and we spent much time sitting around the table laughing and talking. We were in no hurry to get to Acadia. The road had little traffic so we were able to play outside in the yard with the toddler. Nights were dark and quiet and we slept deeply. Elsworth was a quick drive for groceries. We did everything we wanted to do, mountain climbing, hiking, mail boat to the islands, biking, swimming, shopping, Union River Lobster Pot, Jordan Pond House, botanical gardens. Our favorite lunch was at the Seal Cove Goat Farm sitting outside with pizza from the brick fired oven and walking among the affectionate goats. Thanks for the great suggestion! It was a very good week and a great headquarters for our family reunion.

The PERFECT house for our large family

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at the farmhouse. What a comfortable house, full of charm and nooks and crannies! Our six grown children were with us, and fit very comfortably into the house while feeling as if they had their own space. The doors between the rooms really helped to keep noise down and give privacy. For instance, the upstairs queen bedroom is open, at the end of an open staircase from the first floor. With doors on the first floor bedrooms and on the dining area, very little noise got upstairs. Three good size bathrooms, 2 with tubs, meant no lines, no wait! Also, as other reviewers noted, a well-stocked newish kitchen with a nice gas stove. Washer and dryer are right in the kitchen, another nice feature. Also, we appreciated Lamoine, too. We spent much of our time in Acadia, and it is a bit of a drive, but it is also nice to leave the hustle and bustle of the Park and Bar Harbor. Anything lacking? No (well, maybe an apron for the chief cook and bottle washer...). Would we rent this house again? In a heartbeat!

Owner's Response: We are fortunate to be located in Lamoine and have such close access to Lamoine State Park and Lamoine Beach. They are jewels we enjoy in our "backyard." We're glad the house was large enough to give everyone space and privacy. It never occurred to me to have an apron for the chef. That will be remedied tomorrow!

Great week!

  • 5 of 5

We love the charm of an old home and this one was a gem. The house was big enough for all six of us and more. It was within 25 minutes of everything and Lamoine Beach was only minutes by car, perfect location. Thanks Ray!

Restful stay in Lamoine farmhouse

  • 4 of 5

We just came home from a week long stay at the farmhouse and have to say it was very relaxing .The home has a rustic, quirky charm with all of the little "gnome" doors and secret passage to the twin bedroom on the second floor. The furnishings are simple but the kitchen and two of the bathrooms are completely remodeled. We cooked dinner at the farmhouse a few nights and the kitchen is well stocked. The only thing that was missing were wine glasses. I mentioned this to the owner Ray and the next day a bag full of 12 wine glasses appeared at the front door. I would definitely recommend this home for an authentic Maine stay, in fact we enjoyed our time there so much that we are returning at the end of next month for another week.

Lamoine State Park ( beautiful sunsets) and Lamoine Beach are less than a 5 minute drive, we also found Blunts Pond, just around the corner to cool off in. Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park is 20 minutes away and Ellsworth is a 10 minute drive. Seal Cove Farm, which is a goat farm in Lamoine and has excellent goat cheeses and terrific pizza.

Owner's Response: We appreciate all the many families who have stayed at our farmhouse and look forward to many more. It does have many doors and a few very odd-shaped ones. We are thankful when guests let us know of things we can do to improve their stay; and work to make their vacation time as enjoyable as possible.

Awesome old Maine farmhouse. Family friendly. Great owners.

We have rented several houses on VRBO/HomeAway and this was our best experience ever! The house has lots of character with all the modern amenities you could ask for. Fully equipped kitchen, very clean. 3 full bathrooms that made it easy for all of us to feel comfortable. Convenient to Acadia National Park, the Schoodic Penninsula(highly recommend) and Ellsworth which is cute town with history and all the shopping you might need. We cooked lobsters and sat by the campfire and reading in the little yellow room is quite relaxing as well. Loved this place and can't say enough good things about it! We all had the best nights sleep here as it's quiet and the beds are comfortable. We can't wait to return and wish we didn't have to leave!!!!

Comfy, Convenient, Caring Owner

  • 5 of 5

Family of 6, 2 grandparents, 2 grandchildren, 2 parents. We totally loved our stay at the Farmhouse! 3 full baths, modern kitchen, washer, dryer, and plenty of space were just what we needed. Easy to watch movies, play games, prepare and eat meals. Attentive and caring owner answered any questions we had. Convenient location to Bangor, Ellsworth, MDI, yet not on a busy highway. We loved it!
